Lot 444

Ca. 1368-1644 AD or later .A glazed terracotta mingqi depicting a standing attendant on a tiered, integral base. He is portrayed in a noble and dignified manner, with an upright posture and an expression of calm composure. The gentle contours of the figure's face, including the high cheekbones, a prominent nose, and small lips, are carefully crafted with fine details such as the almond-shaped eyes, and the delicately arched eyebrows. The figure is dressed in a long, flowing green robe with contrasting accents on the sides, which are painted in red. The robe is tied with a sash of ochre color, which enhances the elegance of the ensemble. The figure carries an object under his left arm and his both hands are clenched. Mingqi, or "spirit objects," were created to be buried with the deceased and were believed to accompany the soul into the afterlife. These objects were often crafted with great attention to detail and were intended to represent the various aspects of life that would be important in the afterworld. Cf. Christie's Live Auction 5564, Asian Art, 15 September 2005, Lot 407. Size: L:190mm / W:60mm ; 280g Provenance: UK private collection of Asian Art; formerly acquired in the early 1990s in Hong Kong.

HENAN RUSSET-PAINTED BLACK-GLAZED JAR NORTHERN SONG TO JIN DYNASTY 北宋至金 河南黑釉鐵鏽花鳳紋瓶 the globular body rising to pronounced rounded shoulders and surmounted by a narrow flanged neck, freely painted on the exterior in bold russet-iron brush strokes with stylised phoenix or bird motif against a thick, glossy black glaze, extending to the interior and the base, leaving only the foot ring unglazed, revealing the pale brown stoneware body Dimensions:21.5cm high Note: Note: Ovoid jars of this type, with this distinctively small, double-ringed mouth, are termed xiaokou ping (small-mouthed bottles), and were probably used for storing wine and other liquids. Typically dark-glazed, such bottles are often painted in russet and in this instance decorated with an abstract phoenix design. Birds in flight, or abstract floral decoration, rendered with vigorous, calligraphic strokes, are also characteristics of these jars. A jar of this type, with floral decoration rather than the birds on the shoulder of the present jar, in the collection of Dr Robert Barron, is illustrated by R.D. Mowry in Hare's Fur, Tortoiseshell, and Partridge Feathers, Cambridge, 1996, p. 165, no. 55, and subsequently sold at Christie's New York, 30 March 2005, lot 303. Compare also a related jar of larger size from the Robert H. Ellsworth Collection, sold at Christie's New York, The Collection Of Robert Hatfield Ellsworth Part I - Masterworks Including Indian, Himalayan And Southeast Asian Works Of Art, Chinese And Japanese Works Of Art, 17 March 2015, lot 19. Another jar of similar form and similarly decorated with phoenix, was in the Linyushanren collection and sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 2 Dec 2015, lot 2823.

A CHINESE LONGQUAN CELADON GUAN-TYPE SHALLOW DISH SOUTHERN SONG DYNASTY (1127 – 1279) the dish with a concave, shallow chrysanthemum-formed centre, potted with a foliate-shaped rim, and covered overall in a sea-green glaze suffused with Guan-style icy crackles, apart from the unglazed base which fired a purplish brown. 16.3cm diameter Provenance: Edmund Grundner Asiatica, Salzburg, Austria It is considered that the Longquan kilns started to produce crackle glazes during the Southern Song dynasty, and the rare type of glaze with icy crackles was probably made as an imitation of the finest official wares. Although the jade-like, sea-green glaze on this shallow dish is smooth to the touch, it has a profusion of these rare Guan-style icy, flake-like layers in the glaze. There are only a few examples of complete Longquan celadon wares in the Smithsonian National Museum of Asian Art collection with this type of Guan-style glaze and some fragments. To compare the glaze, see fragments with Guan-style celadon glaze in the Smithsonian collection, which are accession numbers FSC-P-1112 and FSC-P-1083. Also, see a shallow dish sold at Christie’s on 17 September 2010, Lot 1354.The foliate rim is quite apparent on this dish; however, due to the thick crackle glaze, the moulded chrysanthemum decoration on the inside and the formed petals decoration underneath are less noticeable.Around the outside of the foot rim is an entirely distinctive concave moulding identified as having been used during the Southern Song dynasty by the Longquan kilns. The V&A collection has a Longquan celadon sherd with a similar style of foot rim, which is dated as Song dynasty, accession number C.1470:9-1924

This exceptional study in graphite, ink, and gouache on BFK Rives brown paper were made by Art Nouveau and Art Deco designer and craftsman Rene Lalique. They include two painted circular drawings and a side view of a design for a watch left in graphite. The upper drawing of entwined foliage pattern is framed by warm brown washes. Underneath, Lalique designed three ouroboros fishes that symbolize eternity. Their bodies and fins are painted in a yellow gold tone above coral red washes. The washes of dark brown and washed black form the background that is enhanced with foliage. These Asian influenced motifs became part of the artistic symbols of Lalique, These extraordinary final stage studies are of museum quality and were acquired directly from the private collection of the descendants of Rene Lalique. The drawings are speculated to be preliminary sketches for the Poissons round box, which had double sided pressed glass designs and a nickel interior. Housed in a natural color wooden frame. Frame size: 9.80"L x 13.40"H x 0.75"W. Artwork dimensions: 8.50"L x 12"H Artist: Rene Jules Lalique (French, 1860-1945)Issued: c. 1895Country of Origin: FranceProvenance: Collection of Marie-Claude Lalique Condition: Age related wear.
