LARGE CHÔBA DANSU FOR A MERCHANT. Japan. 19th - beg. 20th c. Zelkova (keyaki), cypress (hinoki), ceder (sugi), frames lacquered black in front, fittings and handles from iron. In the one-piece chest at the top and bottom two large drawers each with lock. The middle section with eight drawers flanking a narrow enter. Three drawers each with a separate latch (bo), two more drawers with lock. In the center, a small lockable door with two small drawers and a slightly larger one behind it, one of them with lock. Secret compartment not preserved. Above and below each one small lockable drawer. The door and the bolt are decorated with a family crest (mon) with the character for stone (ishi) and chrysanthemum flowers. The lock fittings in Paulownia (kiri) shape. H.136cm, w.171cm, d.59cm. Ashinaga carries Tenaga on his back and the latter holds an octopus with his long arms, which has its tentacles wrapped around Ashinaga's right leg. Both are dressed in loincloths, their hair and beard engraved with fine lines rubbed out in black. While Tenaga has straight hair, that of Ashinaga is curled. H.9cm. Condition A/B. IMPORTANT NETSUKE OF CHÔKARÔ SENNIN WITH GOURD. Japan. Late 18th/early 19th c. Ivory with shiny, amber yellow patina. The figure might be stained a bit. Standing, dressed in a wide robe with leaf collar and apron. Knotted to his belt he has a gourd, to which he points with his left hand. He has raised his right hand and holds a short staff behind his neck. This staff once belonged to a fly whisk, from which probably a part of the hair has broken off. Here was later very skilfully carved over with a leaf, no patina is found here either. H.9.7cm. Sign.: Signed on the back: Nobukatsu. Condition B.
