Julius Middleton Boyd (1837-1919) - On the Moota Moola RiverWatercolour, over graphite, heightened with white Signed lower right 35 x 48.5 cm. (13 3/4 x 19 in) The present work, and the other five accompanying watercolours, are all by the English artist, and East India Company officer, Julius Middleton Boyd (1837-1919). Boyd was stationed in India during the middle of the 19th century, and the present watercolour and other five were most likely executed in the 1880s. WD3407). In the album of sketches, there are a total of 36 drawings, illustrating landscapes and monuments from Bombay and Western India, Rajasthan and Central India. The present watercolours would appear to be larger fully worked elaborations on the sketches in the album, with each work having a direct companion, or source, in the album. The present watercolour relates to f.13 in the British Library album. We have only been able to find one previous record for a comparable work by Boyd, which was sold in Sotheby's New York, 'India & Southeast Asian Works of Art', 19th September 2008, lot 252, which sold for 46,875 USD (incl. premium).

Provenance: The Collection of Edward Cozens-Smith, Esq. (1834-1925), 16 Kensington Square, London. Acquired by the Cozens-Smith family at the Maple & Co. March 26th 1928 auction of the contents of the property following his death. Thence by descent within the Cozens-Smith family. Rather amusingly, it was sold with three Nankin meat dishes and a pair of brass candlesticks, and was described simply as a 'Nankin bottle vase'. The lot apparently sold for £1.2.6. It can be seen in the illustration opposite showing the Tudor Style Lounge at 16 Kensington Square in the brochure for the sale of the house in 1928. This vase is a fine example of the revival during the Qianlong period of the assimilation of Islamic decoration into the repertoire of Chinese porcelain. The shape of the vase derives from 13th century Islamic metal vessels. It appears to have been first copied by Chinese potters in the early 15th century in ewer form, as exemplified by a ewer from The Avery Brundage Collection at the Asian Art Museum, San Francisco (B60P85). The current vase belongs to a group of very similar bottle vases made during the Qianlong period. For a directly comparable example see Sotheby's New York, 11th September 2012, Lot 50.

Lot 83

A LARGE JAPANESE SATSUMA VASE BY YABU MEIZAN (1853-1934), of Chinese meiping form, decorated predominately on one side in raised moriage work with chrysanthemums on a lightly-crackled ground, the flared neck with a gilt rim, the base with a gilt Yabu Meizan seal mark on a red ground, late Meiji / early Taisho, circa 1910, 9" high. This refined vase is large within the context of Yabu Meizan's output. It belongs to a group of wares made later within the Satsuma master's oeuvre, when the earlier dense palette gave way to a simpler more open style. This shift in decorative scheme was noted at the Japanese Exhibition held at Shepherd's Bush in 1910 and most pieces are dated to around that time. The combination of chrysanthemums on a meiping-form vase appears to be unique for Yabu Meizan but several similar-sized vases are extant with the later more open palette. For example, a slender meiping-type vase dated to around 1910 and decorated with a bird on a cherry branch is held in the Jameel Centre for Islamic and Asian Art at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (EA 1993.12). See also Christies Zurich, 19th Febrary 2007, lot 47 for a similar vase.

Jivan Ram, Raja (fl. 1825-1840) - Portrait of Lieutenant Jasper Trower, of the Bengal Horse Artillery Oil on canvas Signed and dated Jeewun Ram 1827 lower left, with indistinct Sanskrit inscription underneath 35.5 x 31 cm. (14 x 12 1/4 in) Provenance: the Trower family; by descent to the present owner Comparative literature: William Sleeman, Rambles and Recollections , London, 1844, vol. ii, pp.285-7 J.P. Losty, A new portrait miniature by Jivan Ram acquired , Asian and African studies blog, British Library website, 12th January 2014 A previously unrecorded and unpublished oil painting by the Indian artist Raja Jivan Ram, whose work, miniatures and oils, are rarely available on the open market. Oil paintings by Ram are almost exclusively held in public institutions, with small collections in the British Library, London, and the Bodleian Library, Oxford. Ram is recorded in contemporary literature by William Sleeman who described him as an excellent portrait-painter, and a very honest and agreeable person, [who] was lately employed to take the Emperor's portrait ( op. cit., vol. ii, pp. 285-7). A preliminary drawing is unfortunately all that remains of the portrait described by Sleeman, but the fact that the Mughal Emperor Akbar II (1806-37) commissioned his portrait to be painted by Ram highlights the regard that the artist had with the Indian, as well as the British, elite. [The drawing is now held in the British Library s India Office and Private Papers collection, ref.: Add.Or.3167] The high regard held for Ram by his contemporaries is further shown with his appointment in the 1830s by the famous Begum Samru of Sardhana (1745-1836), whose palace was decorated with some twenty of his oil paintings ( op. cit., Losty, Jan. 2014). The European influence on Indian portrait painting, which began in the 18th century, and was continued by artists travelling and working in India such as George Chinnery (1774-1852) and Thomas Hickey (1741-1824), is clearly apparent in the portrait of Lieutenant Jasper Trower. The most comparable portrait by Ram to the present work is that of Captain Robert McMullin, which is similarly dated 1827, and may well have been executed in close succession (currently held by the British Library, ref.: F863). The sitter, Lieutenant Jasper Trower (c.1807-1845) of the Bengal Horse Artillery, later a Captain in the 7th Light Field Battery, was killed in action during the Battle of Mudki, Punjab, 1845. We have been unable to find any record for an oil painting by Raja Jivan Ram available on the open market for the last 20 years.
