The present watch pre-dates this creation of an official award to non citizens of the United States and was made by the renowned watchmaker Jules Jürgenson. Upon the cuvette of the watch it is inscribed:The President of the UNITED STATES to Henry J Hart Master of the British ship Achilles for humanity to shipwrecked American Seamen 1859On the morning of the 20th February 1859, the American Steamer Black Warrior ran aground on Rockaway bar while trying to enter New York harbour. With the aid of the vessels Screamer, Achilles and Edwin Blount, the passengers, crew and cargo of the Black Warrior were safely brought ashore. Four days later after numerous efforts to recover the steamer, the Black Warrior succumbed to the elements and was pummelled to pieces. In its heyday the Black Warrior is recorded as carrying mail, passengers and cargo predominantly between New York, New Orleans and Havana, Cuba.
