THE FUN HOUSE NEWS, nos. 1 - 136 (1942-45) & nos. 137 (July 14th, 1945) & 138 (April 1947). mostly weekly (but some breaks due to paper shortage & costs); typewriter script (black & some red ribbon) on single/double sided, flimsy sheets (25 x 20 & (later) 20 x 14 cms. * a quite amazing ephemeral news sheet - possibly the brainchild of Buckinghamshire Air Cadets. Amongst others includes news of air raids (& warnings), searchlights seen, outward bound bombers heard etc. together with 'Joke Corner', 'Advert Corner', 'General Knowledge Corner', 'Garden News' (etc.). Apparently based on activities at a local H.Q. hut (with the ubiquitous 'Chargie' as O.C.); possibly at Bourne End; other places mentioned include Marlow, Lt. Cockmarsh, 'Martins Jam Factory', Spade Oak, etc. Amongst the many stories - 'Here is a view of the new German pilotless plane . . . these planes were used on this country on Tuesday. Since then they have been coming over day and night . . . the noise . . . can easily be heard . . . when it stops, . . . there is almost a 15 second warning before it crashes, with a load of bombs' (no. 97, June 17th 1944, with mounted photo.); 'Spitfire made a crash landing on Little Cockmarsh . . . damage was done to the plane but the pilot got out unhurt. he landed only 10 yards from the river . . . ' The 'Fun' was especially supplied by antics (real & imaginary) of the 'Brickies' & 'Conkeries' (presumably sections forming the whole outfit) under the vigilant eye of 'Chargie'; a lovely period piece, the stuff of a comic strip.
