* Tolkien (J. R. R., 1892-1973). Autograph Letter Signed ('J.R.R. Tolkien'), c/o George Allen & Unwin Ltd, 8th November 1971, to Miss Morley, thanking her for her (unsolicited) letter of introduction offering her services as a secretary with a knowledge of Finland and the Finnish language, regretting that he has no need of such services now but would have done earlier in his career, continuing that he now has a secretary at Allen & Unwin, and rarely has to give any personal answers, 'My "work" now is confirmed to writing, under contract, I cannot be assisted in that, since I cannot dictate it, nor indeed compose any matter of the sort without a pen in hand. My first (written) drafts are usually beyond a secretary's (and sometimes of my own) power of accurate of decipherment, and I always use a typewriter myself for their revision', mentioning his advancing age and his wife's failing health, then wondering how she had heard of his private address, 'It was in order to have one that I with regret left Oxford, to escape from an intolerable persecution and invasion of my time and privacy (even at night). I should be grateful if you would treat your knowledge as confidential, and if possible ask your informant to do so in future. This may seem absurd, but no one who has experienced the ruthlessness of the press and certain kinds of "fan" would think so', the final paragraph concluding with his envy of her knowledge of Finland and its languages and recommending that she travels there, 'though that is not advice based on wisdom or economics', 2. pp., large 8vo (1)
