A BRONZE FIGURE OF A SEATED CROWNED AND BEJEWELED BUDDHA, SOUTHEAST ASIA seated in 'dhyanasana' posture on a lotus throne raised on a shaped and pierced base, his hands in 'bhumisparsa mudra', the exposed torso with pectoral adornments, the arms with bracelets and armlets, the face with downcast eyes and finely arched brows below an ornate diadem, minor wear, tarnishing 90cm high Crowned and elaborately adorned images of Buddhas featured prominently in Northern Thai art. The influence attributed to Burmese crowned Buddhas filtered from neighbouring Burma into the ancient Northern Thai Kingdom of Lanna. Crowned Buddhas usually have delicate articulated fingers wearing multiple rings. Figures of Buddha are generally clad in monastic robes, yet in the Crowned examples, the figures usually wear sheer robes, or the torso is rendered bare. In this example there is no indication of the 'uttarasanga' (outer-garment), but the 'antaravasak' (undergarment) is outlined on the lower abdomen and decorated around the ankles. Crowned Buddhas are shrouded in mystery, some argue the images represent the Buddha in his 'chakravartin' form, when according to legend he appeared as a universal emperor before the doubtful King Jambupati. Others maintain it refers to the status of the Buddha being the Royal Prince Siddhartha Gautama, before achieving enlightenment.
