A COLLECTION OF COMPANY PRINTING BLOCKS, SOUTH-EAST ASIA, EARLY 20TH CENTURY lead or copper on wood block, most relating to Guthrie and Co., inscribed variously in English, Jawi, Burmese and Thai 10 x 7cm and smaller (68) Provenance: Henry Brownrigg, London (1943-2016) Guthrie and Co. was the first British trading company in South East Asia, founded by the Scot, Alexander Guthrie, in Singapore in 1821, its primary activity being the management of rubber and palm oil plantations. In the 1980s it became Malaysian owned, and following various mergers and takeovers continues today as a division of Malaysia's largest company, Sime Darby, which is itself a company with a Scottish background.
CINQUE VASETTI LAI NAM THONG CON COPERCHIO A FORMA DI STUPA - FIVE LAI NAM THONG VASES WITH STUPA-SHAPED LIDS Cina, Jingdezhen (Jiangxi) e Guangzhou (Guangdong), tardo XIXinizio XX secolo Porcellana dipinta a smalti policromi sopra coperta. Punta del coperchio in metallo dorato, una in oro. Pittura di due vasetti leggermente consunta, qualche minuscola crepa. L’orlo di un coperchio è stato rinforzato con un cerchio metallico. Lo stupa in oro è stato anche dipinto. Altezza tra 7,5 e 8,8 cm Lai NamThong (thailandese "pittura a oro") è una variante del bencharong e si diffonde a partire dalla fine del XVIII fino alle soglie del XX secolo. L'oro viene integrato nella tavolozza cromatica, usato sia come colore di fondo sia per dipingere i motivi decorativi, che coprono sempre l'intera superficie. Tip of the cover in gilded metal, one in gold. Paint on both vases slightly worn, with a few tiny cracks. The rim of a cover has been reinforced with a metal ring. The stupa in gold was also painted. Height between 2.95 and 3.46 in. Lai Nam Thong (Thai for "gold paint") is a variant of bencharong and became popular towards the end of the 18th century until the early 20th century. The gold-colour is integrated in the chromatic palette, used both as a background colour and to paint the decorative patterns, that always cover the entire surface. The tips of the stupa-shaped lids could indicate the destinations of the vases to Cambodian clients. € 600

But I do promise you that she will leave on the night of the 15th., immediately we can get her packed after the race which finishes at 4.30pm on the afternoon of the 15th. More than this I cannot do'. Segrave further asks if the exhibitors will defray the extra heavy cost of the freight express.
