Tom Wesselmann (American, 1931-2004). Serigraph titled "Seascape (Tit)" depicting a nude breast in front of an ocean. From Graphic (Graphik) USA, Edition Plus, Baden-Baden, 1967-68. Published by Edition Plus, Suzanne L. Fischer, Baden-Baden. Distributed by Trois Anges, Inc., New York. Numbered 99/100, pencil signed, and dated.Provenance: Private Minnesota Collection.Lot Essay:Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Wesselmann initially studied psychology at Hiram College before turning his focus to art and enrolling at the Art Academy of Cincinnati. He later moved to New York City, where he immersed himself in the vibrant art scene of the 1950s and 1960s.Wesselmann gained widespread recognition for his bold and colorful compositions that appropriated imagery from popular culture, often featuring everyday objects and figures from advertising, magazines, and consumer goods. His iconic series of "Great American Nude" paintings, begun in the early 1960s, redefined the portrayal of the female form in art, blending elements of eroticism with a graphic and stylized aesthetic. Throughout his career, Wesselmann experimented with various mediums, including painting, collage, and assemblage, pushing the boundaries of traditional artistic techniques.Beyond his depictions of the female body and consumer culture, Wesselmann's work also delved into themes of desire, consumption, and the commodification of imagery in contemporary society. His compositions were characterized by their flatness, vibrant colors, and clean lines, which emphasized the visual impact of his subjects. Wesselmann's influence on Pop Art and contemporary art as a whole is significant, as his provocative and visually striking works challenged conventions and sparked critical discourse about the intersection of art and popular culture.Height: 29 1/2 in x width: 23 1/2 in.

Indiana's most famous work, "LOVE," featuring bold letters with the "O" tilted at a jaunty angle, quickly became emblematic of the era, appearing on stamps, sculptures, and reproductions worldwide. His art transcended mere representation, delving into themes of patriotism, consumer culture, and the American Dream, resonating with audiences through its timeless imagery and vibrant colors.Throughout his career, Indiana's art evolved to encompass various mediums, including painting, sculpture, and printmaking. Beyond his artistic contributions, Indiana was a staunch advocate for social justice, using his art as a platform for political commentary and LGBTQ+ advocacy. Yves Klein (1928-1962) was a French artist known for his pioneering contributions to the development of Post-War European art. He is particularly associated with the Nouveau Réalisme and Zero movements, and he is best known for his exploration of color, space, and his creation of the iconic "International Klein Blue" (IKB).Some key points about Yves Klein and his work:1. **International Klein Blue (IKB):** One of Klein's most famous contributions to the art world is the creation of his own unique ultramarine color known as International Klein Blue. This vivid and intense blue became a signature element of his artworks.2. **Monochromatic Paintings:** Klein is known for his monochromatic paintings, where he applied layers of pigment to create a flat, uniform surface. These works are often associated with the Minimalist movement.3. **Anthropometry:** Klein developed a technique called "Anthropometry," where he used the human body as a paintbrush. He covered models in paint and had them press their bodies against canvas, creating abstract compositions.4. **Sculptures and Installations:** Klein's artistic practice extended beyond paintings. He also created sculptures, often utilizing unconventional materials, and explored ideas related to space, void, and immateriality.5. **Performance Art:** Klein's art often involved performative elements, blurring the lines between traditional art forms. His exhibitions were conceptual and immersive experiences.6. **Spiritual and Philosophical Influences:** Klein's work was influenced by his interest in Eastern spirituality, mysticism, and his belief in the power of art to evoke profound emotions and connections.7. **Legacy:** Yves Klein's artistic innovations have had a lasting impact on the art world. His emphasis on color, materiality, and the relationship between art and viewer influenced subsequent generations of artists.Klein's relatively short life did not hinder the significance of his contributions. His innovative approach to color, material, and his exploration of ideas related to the spiritual and the immaterial continue to inspire and influence contemporary artists and art movements.Yves Klein "Blue Circle" SerigraphMeasures 23 x 23.

One of the foremost authorities on New York subway art,and other aspects of urban youth culture, his photographs record hundreds of ephemeral, original art works that have long since vanished. His archive of over 1,500 photographs is represented exclusively by Eric Firestone Gallery, New York and East Hampton. Exhibits of his photos include the O.K. Harris Gallery and the landmark ‘New York-New Wave’ show at P.S. l, and important galleries and museums in Europe. He has co-authored the definitive account of New York graffiti art, Subway Art (Holt Rinehart Winston, N.Y. 1984) and a sequel on the art form's world-wide diffusion, Spray Can Art (Thames and Hudson Inc. London, 1987)
