THE DOCUMENT PROBABLY DATES FROM EARLY IN THE 1950'S SHORTLY AFTER THE FOUNDING OF THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA. THE BRUSH WRITTEN LETTER IS ADDRESSED TO THE WRITER'S YOUNGER SIBLINGS - A BROTHER AND A SISTER. THE WRITER IS A DOCTOR OR OFFICIAL WORKING IN A BUILDINGTHAT CARES FOR YOUNG CHILDREN. THIS INSTITUTION APPEARS TO BE CALLED THE HOUSE OF HAPPINESS, HE THANKS HIS SIBLINGS FOR SENDING SO MANY EXTREMELY USEFUL AND BEAUTIFUL PRESENTS TO THE INSTITUTION. HE RELATES HOW EVERY SMALL CHILD ON ARRIVING INSIDE THE HOUSE OF HAPPINESS RECEIVES MEDICAL CARE (A CHECK UP) BY ONE OF THE STAFF. Photographs, periodicals and ephemera relating to George Hemmen and an Antarctic expedition as part of the International Geophysical Year Programme 1955-56, to include Certificate for Investiture into the Ancient Order of the Deep 1956 and into The Ancient Order of The Antarctic, a copy of the Discovery Journal 1956, three copies of Overseas League periodical, 'How to Play Chess' book belonging to Hemmen and a large quantity of original photographs taken by Hemmen, including photographs of him at work, the expedition ships, animals, the Antarctic landscape, the expedition dogs, etc. George Hemmen was given the name Skate and journeyed to the Antarctic 1955-56, he appears in the Discovery Journal July 1956, also Overseas League Journal January 1958 and his photographs were published in The International Geophysical Year periodical (12). CONDITION REPORT Yellow boxes are full of black and white photographs, also a small quantity of colour photographs. Two pictures show Christmas cakes dated 1953 and 1954.
