Lot 104

Probably the rarest War genre poster in existence. This is a linen-backed Quad for "The Dam Busters" (1955). Based on the Paul Brickhill book which detailed the daring raid on the dams in the Ruhr, the film starred Richard Todd as Guy Gibson, the leader of the raid (Todd himself had been a paratrooper and took part in the D-Day capture of Pegasus Bridge). The successful raid depended not just on the bravery of the RAF crews but also the ingenuity of Barnes Wallis who invented the famed "bouncing bombs". The highly stylised poster illustration shows Guy Gibson, white scarf billowing, with a Lancaster bomber overhead. The identity of the poster artist is unknown though the free-flowing style might suggest one of the Italian artists who occasionally provided the London agencies with artwork from Rome, possibly Angelo Cesselon.Artist: UnknownDimensions: 30" x 40" (76 x 102 cm)Condition: GoodLinen-backed with restoration to 6" tear from mid left rim and several areas of old tape stains to white rim.VAT Status: M

Lot 121

The 1958 film "Dracula", confirmed Hammer Studios as Britain's premier producer of horror films. The original first release "Dracula" Quad poster is now one of the most collectible of all UK Quad posters. This poster, however, is for the first re-release of "Dracula" in 1964. The design essentially copies that of the original 1958 Quad Advance poster (with a slightly different colour palette). The day-glo title and faux warning "Don't Dare See It Alone!" are all designed to emphasise the horror element. For Hammer collectors, the presence of credits for Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Anthony Hinds, Jimmy Sangster and Michael Carreras, represents something of a "full-house". A rare and unusual Hammer poster.Artist: UnknownDimensions: 30" x 40" (76 x 102 cm)Condition: GoodFolded with various small conservation tape repairs to edge nicks (longest 1 1/2"), general creasing and original print fault to "Peter Cushing".VAT Status: M

Lot 130

Prototype Vic Fair artwork for this horror-comedy based on the Stephen King novel, the film starring Drew Barrymore and James Woods. Eventually this design was unused, the distributors preferring a more literal and photographic Quad poster design but the Vic Fair concept provides arguably the more memorable imagery.Artist: Vic FairDimensions: 24" x 32 3/4" (61 x 83 cm) overallCondition: ExcellentArtwork on layout paper which has been affixed to card with a hand-painted acetate overlay carrying title script etc, the underlying artwork being watercolour and ink. Please note this lot is sold without copyright, reproduction rights, licensing agreements or any other type of legal release.VAT Status: M

Finished Vic Fair prototype artwork for the 1971 British film "Gumshoe", this partly inspired by the American genre of private investigator movies (the tag-line referencing Humphrey Bogart). Fair adopts a 1930's retro design and adds a photographic image of the hero (Albert Finney) into the artwork. As comparison with the printed Quad shows, Fair slightly amended the photo but otherwise the Quad is a close match for this prototype.Artist: Vic FairDimensions: 20" x 27 1/2" (51 x 70 cm)Condition: ExcellentArtwork applied to board with an added black paper surround, the media being a mix of watercolour, pencil, magic marker and photographic.Quad poster image supplied for reference & NOT included in the sale. Lot 145

An iconic poster design for possibly David Bowie's most famous film role as the alien in Nic Roeg's "The Man Who Fell To Earth" (1976). As was often the case, several artists competed for this commission but Vic Fair stayed up all night to perfect his submission and won the job. The design places Bowie to the fore in an interesting framing of geometric shapes.Artist: Vic FairDimensions: 30" x 40" (76 x 102 cm)Condition: ExcellentUnrestored, with 3 vertical folds and a single faint part horizontal fold, slight creasing to upper rim but overall in excellent condition.VAT Status: M

Lot 148

Prototype Vic Fair artwork for the sci-fi film "Short Circuit" (1986). The finished Quad poster utilised the John Alvin artwork for the American poster campaign so it appears as if Fair was asked to experiment but that ultimately the Alvin design was preferred. It is a moot point as to which design has more impact.Artist: Vic FairDimensions: 22" x 25 1/2" (56 x 65 cm) overallCondition: ExcellentArtwork on layout paper affixed to card with a hand-written acetate overlay, the media being a mix of watercolour, ink and magic marker. Please note this lot is sold without copyright, reproduction rights, licensing agreements or any other type of legal release.VAT Status: M

Lot 151

Prototype Vic Fair artwork for the Quad for the 1966 British Comedy, "The Wrong Box", this including the likes of Peter Sellers, Tony Hancock, Peter Cook, Dudley Moore etc. This was a "finished" prototype and shows a close correlation to the printed quad poster. Lot 153

Highly original poster design for this 1967 French documentary about the Vietnam War which showed partisan support for the North Vietnamese. With contributions from a variety of directors, including Jean-Luc Godard, the film was targeted at the arthouse market. This particular poster appears to be a bespoke creation for the Paris Pullman cinema, located in Fulham (the cinema closed in 1983). The print run for single cinema viewings such as this was tiny and consequently these posters are rare.Artist: UnknownDimensions: 20" x 30" (51 x 76 cm)Condition: FairFolded with paper loss lower right corner, edge nicks, small conservation repair to right-mid rim and irregular trim to right hand side. The poster also carries two printers marks and has been stored rolled.VAT Status: M

Lot 156

One of the most collectible cinema poster images of Audrey Hepburn. Lot 160

Linen-backed Quad for the Anglo-French production "Girl On A Motorcycle" (1968) starring Marianne Faithful and Alain Delon. A poster design which exemplifies "less is more", the teasing imagery of a girl in black leathers sufficing. The presentation of the film title echoes the slogan badges that were popular during the heady days of the flower-power era. An iconic 1960's British film poster.Artist: UnknownDimensions: 30" x 40" (76 x 102 cm)Condition: ExcellentLinen-backed with light foldline restoration and overall in superb condition.VAT Status: M

Lot 161

An ABC cinema chain Quad for the 1968 film "Girl On A Motorcycle", presenting a radically different poster design to the "black leathers" version that was printed for the General Release. As one of the largest cinema chains in the UK, ABC would sometimes either adapt the commonly available Quad for their own use or would (as in this case) produce an entirely different poster. Here the designer provides a more literal interpretation of the film, the swept back hair and blurred green background giving a real sense of speed. ABC's in-house poster designer was Ted Verrum and it is possible that this striking poster was one of his creations. The poster is an unfolded "proof" poster.Artist: UnknownDimensions: 30" x 40" (76 x 102 cm)Condition: ExcellentUnrestored, unfolded printers "proof" poster in near mint condition. Poster has a couple of light creases and a tiny 1/4" conservation repair to edge nick upper left rim.VAT Status: M

Lot 162

Scarce UK 3-Sheet poster, now linen-backed, for this seminal Gangster movie that spawned two sequels. The "puppet-master" title design was by the American artist S. "Neil" Fujita.Artist: Sadamitsu FujitaDimensions: 40" x 80" (102 x 153 cm)Condition: ExcellentLinen-backed and rolled with light restoration to foldline wear and a few light surface marks/creases but overall in very nice condition.VAT Status: †
