An important gold and diamond Imperial presentation box by Fabergé, workmaster August Frederick Hollming, the hinged box with laurel leaf engraved decoration highlighted with arrows, the front cover containing a miniature by Johannes Zehngraf of His Imperial Highness, Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich, wearing a military uniform adorned with military medals and orders including the order of St. Andrew on a collar interspersed with Romanov eagles and the Order of St. George, within a border of forty-six cushion shaped old brilliant cut diamonds. The inner lid inscribed in Russian: 'Presented by His Imperial Highness Prince Sergei Alexandrovich To cadet of the Imperial Court Prince Andrei Alexandrovich Shirinsky Shachmatov Moscow 31st October 1901' Signed and marked to the lid and base K Fabergé in cyrillic with 56 kokoshnik marks for St Petersburg 1899-1908, assay master Jakov Ljapunov Workmaster's mark 'A.H' for August Frederick Hollming. Measuring 2.4cm high, 9.2cm wide, 5.8cm deep There were many presentation boxes given as gifts to both Russian and foreign dignitaries, made by all the Imperial jewellers, including Fabergé, Ovchinnikov (see lot 319) and Bolin. The most important presentation boxes given by the Romanov family are set with miniatures framed by diamonds, as the example offered here, such jewelled presents reflecting the social standing of the recipient. This box is rare as it has purely engraved decoration, and is not further embellished by Fabergé's typical enamelling. Adams J151-152. Mortimer 273. A rare work on the history of Malta, being a revised edition of the Statutes of the Knights of the Order of St. John of Jersualem, first published by A. Blado in Rome, in 1556. This edition was reprinted to celebrate the installation as Cardinal of Grand Master Hughes de Loubens-Verdale on the 18th December 1587. EDWARD FACON WATSON, By and After Lea Castle Worcestershire two, lithograph in colours, arched top 56 x 76cm, with seven Ordnance Survey Maps relevant to the Lea Castle Estate, scale 1/2500 or 1/10560, 1883 & 1891: with reference sheet, in contemporary portfolio, lettered in gold on a red label LEA CASTLE ESTATE (9) Lea Castle, Wolverley near Kidderminster, Worcestershire was built by the iron master Edward Knight in 1818, who remodelled the earlier house. A kinsman of the antiquary, collector and author, Richard Payne Knight of Downton Castle the house was later sold to the Brown-Westhead family. Two drawings of Lea Castle by James Ward and a collection of picturesque landscape watercolours by C W Bampfylde (see lot 758) a friend of Knight, from Knight's collection were sold in these 'rooms ( ) All in fine clean condition, portfolio with old localised damp stains.
