George Condo 1957 Concord/New Hampshire - lebt und arbeitet in New YorkMulticolored woman. 2007.Öl auf Leinwand. Verso signiert und datiert. 61 x 76,3 cm (24 x 30 in). [JS]. The only way for me to feel the difference between every other artist and me is to use every artist to become me`. William Speakman, London, a double basket top three train bracket clock, the ebonised case with 4 turned finials above and repousse gilt metal mounts, the 7inch (18cm) dial with winged mask spandrels, mock pendulum and date aperture, silvered chapter ring, signed to a rectangular brass strip above the dial, having verge escapement, chime silent lever, the well engraved backplate signed `Wm Speakman London`, chiming and quarter repeating on a nest of 5 bells, the upper left backplate corner cut to accommodate the hammers, pierced heart-shaped pallet cock, all upon 4 disc feet. *William Speakman was apprenticed in 1654, and free of the Clockmakers Company in 1661, and Master in 1701 43cm (17in) Condition report: Some alterations / work have taken place on this clock. It has been suggested that the clock may originally have been a simple timepiece, later adapted to a three train movement and dial. The engraving of the signature above the dial is not of the same quality as the backplate signature, and may be later added. The striking and chiming needs some attention, but was working quite recently. The case looks to be old. The clock is therefore being offered `as seen`. Provenance: According to a hand written note, this clock was bought at Sothebys, lot 65, sale 4 October 1968. Note: for a clock by Speakman of similar design, see Skinner, Boston, sale of November 2, 2013, lot 284

Kaart van de Sandwich Eilanden Although the first printed map of Hawaii is credited to Captain James Cook, it was prepared for publication by Lieutenant Henry Roberts, who prepared all of the maps for the three-volume narrative of Cook`s final voyage. Roberts drew the map from a now-missing survey by William Bligh (of Mutiny on the Bounty fame) who was Sailing Master on the HMS Resolution. The map is a landmark in Hawaiian cartography and provided the basis for all subsequent mapping of the islands. The routes of the Resolution and the Discovery around the islands are carefully traced with nice topographical detail on each island. A large inset of La Baye de Karakakooa (Kealakekua Bay) is featured with details of soundings, navigational hazards and the anchorages of the two ships, and quaint depictions of houses, palm trees, and fields inland. Cook spent his last few weeks in Kealakekua Bay before dying in a confrontation with natives on February 14, 1779. This is a Dutch edition of Henry`s chart, engraved by Cornelius van Baarsel. An excellent impression on watermarked paper. Issued folding, with a binding trim at left that has been replaced with old paper, and an associated binding tear that just enters the neatline and has been archivally repaired. 10.5"" W x 17.8"" H Cook, James (Capt.) 1785

A magnificent copy of the Ninth German Bible. The only printed German Bible edition by Koberger, one of the most beautifully illustrated bibles of the 15th century. The series of fine woodcuts influenced later Bible illustration, including those by Dürer for Koberger`s 1498 Apocalypse. They had first appeared in two Low-German Bible editions printed at Cologne in 1478/79 and are attributed to the eponymous `Master of the Cologne Bibles`. For his Bible Kobeger commissioned two new German types and is said to have run 24 presses to print it. It was available in 3 forms: completely uncolored, rubricated and colored simply in green, ochre and purple, or rubricated and colored in a wide variety of colors and gold leaf. The second part of our copy has the deluxe illumination while the first part of the present copy is uncolored but with painted lombards, 2 large initials in gold and 21 contemp. mounted handcolored woodcut Maiblumen initials (cf. the copy sold at Christie`s, 14 Dec. 2001 which has also this contemp. mounted initials) at the beginning of each biblical book. ALEXANDRE BENOIS (RUSSIAN 1870-1960)House in Cassis (Possibly the Ida Brown Residence), 1932gouache and watercolor on paper 46 x 61.5 cm (18 1/8 x 24 1/4 in.)signed and dated lower rightLOT NOTESAlexandre Benois was born into the celebrated Benois family and initially gained recognition as one of the founding members of the widely influential artist group Mir Iskusstva. Over the years his extremely prolific career took him from book illustration and costume design for the Ballets Russes to a curatorship at the Hermitage Museum. In 1927, shortly after leaving his post as the curator of Old Master paintings at the Hermitage, Benois settled in France and continued to work primarily as a set designer. This painting, executed in September of 1932, was created while Benois was traveling through the French countryside. A very similar view of analogous dimensions, dated to August of 1932, and inscribed as depicting the House of Ida Brown in Cassis, was sold at Sotheby`s London, on June 9, 2010 as lot 255. The dimensions, strong similarity of subject matter, and close proximity of date suggest that the present lot may depict a different view of the same location.

§ Gilbert Spencer (British, 1892-1979) Frontispiece to the Ten Commandments pencil 55 x 38cm (21 x 15in) Provenance: The Goupil Gallery Ltd., 5 Regent Street, London, SW1. The Hon. Robert Gathorne-Hardy, The Mill House, Stanford Dingley, Berkshire, and by descent. Exhibited: The Museum and Art Gallery, Reading (according to an old label to the reverse). Gilbert Spencer, younger son of Stanley Spencer, was born in Cookham, Berkshire and throughout his career, like his brother, returned to painting the landscapes of his home town, as well as Oxfordshire, Dorset and the Lake District.. Spencer studied at the Camberwell School, and wood carving at the RCA from 1911-1912, before studying under the greatly influential Henry Tonks at the Slade School from 1913-1915 and again from 1919-1920, serving in the war in the intervening years. Spencer became involved in the Carline group after the war; Sydney Carline employing him at Oxford where he held the position of Master of Drawing, after Spencer met Hilda Carline who was later to be Stanley Spencer`s wife. His first one man show was held at the Goupil Gallery, London, in 1923; it was during this period of his career that he started to further his social circle of rising and successful artists, as well as meeting members of high society. As well as painting rural landscapes and vistas, Spencer was commissioned to paint many murals, such as for the Royal Academy restaurant in 1958, for which he painted `An Artist`s Progress`; depicting his journey from Cookham into the Slade through to election to the Royal Academy. He was also commissioned to create murals for Holywell Manor, Balliol College, Oxford in 1936, and `The Scholar Gypsy` for the students` union of University College, London, c.1956. Spencer`s teaching posts proved his great success; he was appointed Professor of Painting at the Royal College of Art 1932-48; Official War Artist 1940-43; Head of Painting at Glasgow School of Art 1948-1950 and at Camberwell School 1950-1957.

§ Augustus Edwin John, OM, RA (British, 1878-1961) Portrait of Alexandra (Alick) Schepeler red chalk 35 x 25cm (14 x 10in) Provenance: Private collection, Cambridge. Exhibited: Folio Spring Exhibition, English and French Master Drawings, No.9a. Rebecca John dates the present exceptional portrait of Alick Schepeler to 1906-1907. It is one of an important group of drawings of Alick Schepeler by Augustus John, and from his best period. Three studies of the sitter are in the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, the Manchester City Art Gallery, and there are several in the USA. Alexandra (Alick) Schepeler was the embodiment of John?s romantic ideal; she was part Irish and part German and had been born in Minsk, Russia, in March 1882, making her way to England as a child through Poland. She was employed as a secretary by the Illustrated London News; hard-working and also hard partying at night, she lived for passion, both physical and romantic love. Alick met Augustus John through her friend Frieda Bloch who was studying at the Slade. John and Schepeler kept up a secret correspondence for many years, and throughout many of his other relationships. In 1907, John lived in London for a year and during this time she became his muse. John thought of Alick as an enigma and often compared her to mythological women, most often a water nymph, in his many letters - his ""rose of my soul"" and ""jeune fille mysterieuse et gaie"". He called her ""Undine"" after the female water sprites. We are grateful to Rebecca John for her assistance with the catalogue entry. Under glass and the corners look to be stuck down, with some discolouration and old glue visible and with a little crinkling.
