Whilst such vessels were originally produced for holding water, hydriai were often re-purposed. From the 5th century B.C. onwards, they also had a funerary function, used in the cult of the dead and the underworld. Appearing as grave deposits, they were sometimes used as funerary urns, receptacles for the ashes of the deceased (see the MET hydria from Galaxidi, found with the bones still inside). Hydriai were also commonly associated with rituals relating to the cults of the gods, with particular emphasis on Zeus, Hera, Aphrodite, Athena, Apollo, Artemis, Demeter, Persephone, Dionysus, the Nymphs, Adonis and other gods and heroes. They have been found in temples and public buildings and have been recorded as prizes in athletic games. It has also been suggested that the more lavish examples were gifted to brides. For this specific lot, 5% import VAT is applicable on the hammer price [A video of this lot is available to view on Timeline Auctions Website.]

The original Turbo. One of only 74, UK-supplied, right-hand drive, 3-litre cars presented in gleaming black with olive green leather and on offer from 43 years single private ownership. This is a rare opportunity to take ownership of one of only 74 right-hand drive, 3-litre 930 Turbos supplied directly to the UK. Offered directly from 43-years single private ownership (just two owners in total) and spectacularly presented in solid Schwartz (700) paintwork with an olive green leather interior and matched green carpets, possibly unique in this colour combination. Whilst in the ownership of our vendor, this rare classic Porsche has been enjoyed regularly and always maintained by the same expert Porsche specialists who know the car rather well.In 1997, the decision was taken to undertake a full bare-metal body restoration to have the old 911 looking its best once again. Our vendor confirms that in his ownership the Turbo has had no accident damage and during the restoration no evidence of damage was discovered. Two new front wings, new front and rear bumpers were expertly replaced and a nearside Porsche door mirror fitted (for safety) before the original colour was re-applied. The windscreen was replaced with one which has an integrated aerial, so the new offside wing has not been drilled for a conventional aerial. The front fog lights were removed and replaced with Cibie driving lights, which are activated when main beam is selected, giving excellent road illumination. A detailed invoice supports the works carried out over 317 hours which cost £5,388 in total, and this is accompanied by a portfolio of 39 photographs documenting the restoration. At 72,493 miles the speedometer failed and a new unit was fitted, however, the original unit is included in the sale and, when combined, the total mileage recorded is c.103,610. For the last 43 years, the cosseted Turbo has been dry stored in a temperature-controlled garage when not in use and as such remains beautifully preserved since the restoration and ready to offer another 40+ years of enjoyable motoring.Presented for auction having just had a major engine-out service and detailed mechanical check-over which included removing and refurbishing the turbo, replacing brake pipes, new calipers and the brake master cylinder (£7,000).Accompanied by a large history file including service invoices dating back to 1979, a wealth of old MOT certificates, its Porsche wallet with manuals, the original tool kit, original jack and spare wheel, original tyre compressor, original first aid kit (unused), original spare bulb kit and original tyre pressure gauge. A copy of Porsche Post from Summer 1979 is also included with chassis #181 featuring on the cover. This stunning and significant early 911 Turbo is now available as the owner is simply ready for something a little less on the ‘wild side’. A special opportunity to take ownership of this magnificent piece of Porsche history.SpecificationMake: PORSCHEModel: 911 901/930Year: 1976Chassis Number: 9307700181Registration Number: TSO 283RTransmission: ManualDrive Side: Right-hand DriveMake: RHDInterior Colour: GreenClick here for more details and images

SWAN MARK REGISTERS OF OWNERS (Two volumes): The first volume is for marks used by the proprietors of lands in the “Hundred of Wisbech'', Isle of Ely (Cambridgeshire), and dated 1566. It contains over 600 marks, followed by 19 pages of manuscript notes concerning the “Laws and Ordinances regarding swans”. The marks are made up of swans’ heads drawn in black, with most of the beaks painted in red, a swan's foot to the right of each and in many cases the name of the mark's owner above it. The names start with the Dukes of Norfolk and Suffolk, on to the Bishop of Ely and the Dean of York and finishing with the wealthy landowners. The manuscript notes are dated 1577, signed: George Carlton and go on to say: "it is desired and ordered that all books and swannmarks be reformed, corrected, amended and made uniform into one book and that remains in the keeping of the swanner, or his deputy…” A Beautiful volume of an early record of swan ownership, bound in near contemporary full leather with blind stamps to covers and later spine. The second volume is dated 1834 and with the ownership name of Alan H Whitman? PP: (4) manuscript notes on swan marks, etc, followed by 84 pages of swan marks, 12 to the page, making a total of c900 marks, mostly with the owner's name, followed by an index of owners (A-E only). Plus: a loosely inserted vellum sheet with Lord Walpole's swan mark, drawn from an old document. The volume is bound in contemporary full calf, with one of two clasps. [The last time a similar item to the first volume above appeared for sale, was sold by Christies, London, June 2nd. 1999 reaching £32,200 (including commission)]. That one was dated c1500“The swan has been deemed a royal bird from the Middle Ages, and although the privilege of owning a 'game' of swans was granted by the crown to individuals or institutions, all such birds had to be marked and pinioned. Only the monarch could claim unmarked mute swans. Swan marks are used to identify the birds’ rightful owners or licence holders and to assist in any dispute over ownership, or to use at swan upping, when the Swan-Master oversees the marking of the new cygnets” (2)Provenance: The Peter and Pat Crofts Collection

UNITED KINGDOM. Lot of 2 gold coins.Coin 1: Victoria, 1837-1901, Half-Sovereign 1890. London. With JEB Low shield DISH L512. 19.3 mm. 3.99 g. 917/1000 Gold. (AGW=0.1176 oz.)No half sovereigns were struck in 1888 and 1889 in an attempt to steer the public towards greater use of silver coins, which were less prone to wear than the half-sovereign and so more cost-effective. The double-florin (4 shillings) piece was produced 1887-1890 to offset for the half-sovereign shortage, but weighs 22.6 grams and measures 36 mm. The public was not happy about carrying around the equivalent value of the widely used half-sovereign (10 shillings) in silver coins. Production of half sovereigns recommenced in 1890 with 2,266,023 coins. The issues the mint encountered with the Jubilee coins are well documented and were exacerbated by the pressure for the coins to be ready for the Queen's Golden Jubilee on 20 June 1887. Due to time restraints the Jubilee head sculptor Joseph Edgar Boehm’s initials JEB were individually punched onto the master dies, resulting in three categories of JEB types—Imperfect J, hooked J (six unique dies) and no JEB. It is unclear in which order coins of these categories would have been produced and why at some point, presumably after 1887, it was decided to discontinue the use of dies with the JEB initials. After 1887, JEB initials are all of the Imperfect J type and become increasingly rarer as the years pass. This in our opinion indicates that coins struck after 1887 bearing the JEB initials would relate to the use of old dies from 1887 production runs, in the same way as the use of high shield dies.To improve metal flow, the reverse was redesigned at some point after 1887 and the shield moved slightly lower (sometimes called wide date as the lower part of the shield pushed the date further apart). In the same way as presumed with the use of JEB dies after 1887, the Mint continued using the high shield dies from 1887 production runs until 1892, the later ones being very rare (1891 is ultra-rare).Coin 2: Victoria, 1837-1901, Half-Sovereign 1890. § ALISON WATT O.B.E., F.R.S.E., R.S.A. (SCOTTISH 1965-) CLARION (DIPTYCH) Oil on canvasDimensions:each 61cm x 61cm (24in x 24in)Note: Note: Clarion is a diptych from Watt’s much admired series of works which depict sensuous folds of cloth and the play of light and shadow. These paintings were underpinned by close study of and admiration for the detail of Old Master paintings. Watt has titled this work ‘clarion’, a trumpet-like bugle from the Middle Ages renowned for its clear and shrill tone. The wording both alludes to the rounded funnel of material, reminiscent of the form of a musical instrument, as well as a sense of all that is pure and crisp.
