BRUTTIUM, SILVER TETRADRACHM OF RHEGIUM, ca. 400 BC, 17.342g, 2h. Herzfelder 104 (same dies). Gillet 324 (this coin). Rare. Old cabinet tone. Perfectly centered and struck in high relief. With a beautiful head of Apollo in the finest late 5th century style. Extremely fine. Former Michel Eddé collection, privately acquired from Tradart; The Numismatic Auction 1985 (3) lot 16; former Charles Gillet (1879-1972) collection This is one of the great Apollos to be found in Greek coinage, and it was produced during the same period of artistic ferment as the famous issues of Syracuse, Katane and Kamarina, struck from dies signed by artists of the highest caliber. The die cutter who made the dies for this coin has been given the name "Master of the Apollo of Rhegium", and he is clearly on the same level as Kimon, the great, perhaps even the greatest, of the Syracusan engravers. In fact, the amazingly serene, albeit severe, expression on the face of Apollo is very reminiscent of the magnificent heads of Arethusa on Kimon`s dekadrachms. Starting Price: €30000

ROWE, Harry (1726-99). Macbeth: A Tragedy. Written by William Shakespeare. With Notes and Emendations by Harry Rowe ... The Second Edition. York: Printed by Wilson, Spence, and Mawman, 1799. 8vo in 4s (225 x 145mm). Engraved portrait of Harry Rowe (some very light staining). [?]Original wrappers (rather worn). Provenance: partly illegible old inscription on verso of wrapper. The title page describes the editor as "Trumpet-Major to the High Sheriffs of Yorkshire; and Master of a Puppet-Show." In his Preface, the editor describes how, six months previously, he had been "as poor as the poorest felon that ever was hanged at Tyburn." He goes on: "In plain English, I am Master of a Puppet-show; and as from the nature of my employment, I am obliged to have a few stock-plays ready for presentation, whenever I am accidentally visited by a select party of Ladies and Gentlemen, I have added the Tragedy of Macbeth to my Green-room collection. The alterations that I have made in this play are warranted from a careful perusal of a very old manuscript in the possession of my prompter, one of whose ancestor`s by the mother`s side, was rush-spreader, and candle-snuffer, at the Globe play-house."

AFTER THOMAS GAINSBOROUGH (1727-1788), BRITISH LANDSCAPE WITH CATTLE Oil on canvas; given the title Landscape with Cattle on the nameplate. 40"" x 50"" 101.6 x 127 cm. Provenance: Sir William Cornelius Van Horne, Toronto, (1843-1915), inventory number VH.29, believed to be a copy, that was formerly on the London market (no date) and presumably the one Van Horne bought (no date); Thence by descent through the family, Toronto Exhibited: Art Museum of Montreal, Montreal in A Selection from the Collection of Paintings of the Late Sir William Van Horne, K.C.M.G. 1843-1915, 1933, Cat. No. 109, entitled Landscape and Cattle, as Ascribed to Thomas Gainsborough, without illustration. Without being photographed for the exhibition catalogue of 1933, Lumsden comments without dimensions, provenance or other documentation, it is nearly impossible to trace Literature: Gainsboroughs original canvas Rocky Wooded Landscape with Rustic Lovers, Drover and Cattle of circa 1771-1772, referenced in John T. Hayes The Landscape Paintings of Thomas Gainsborough: a critical text and catalogue raisonne; Ithaca NY/London: Cornell University Press, 1982, 447, No. 103 strongly suggests that Van Horne bought a copy of Gainsboroughs original Rocky Wooded Landscape with Rustic Lovers, Drover and Cattle Hayes entry mentions, A copy, of the same size as the original, was formerly on the London market and presumably, it refers to the painting Van Horne purchased. See Ian G. Lumsdens, Gainsborough in Canada, The Beaverbrook Art Gallery, Fredericton, New Brunswick, published to coincide with the exhibition, 18 October, 1991 to 31 December, 1991 introduction: To Gather Objects: The Collecting of British paintings in Canada in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, pgs . 1-4 Note: According to a 1914 insurance appraisal of Van Hornes art collection, it comprised some two hundred and thirty Old Master and 19th Century works.

A FINE ICON OF THE "CLOUD" DORMITION PALEKH, CIRCA 1800 72.5 by 55 cm. This icon is a work of the highest quality by an outstanding master. It represents the most developed version of a so-called “Cloud” Dormition. The apostles are depicted rapt in wonder at the bedside of the Mother of God and also in the upper part of the composition, flying-in on clouds towards Jerusalem from various lands. The first portrayal of this kind in Rus is encountered in an early 13th century icon from the Desyatinny Monastery Church of the Nativity of the Mother of God near Novgorod (now in the State Tretyakov Gallery). Following an ancient narrative source, the artist depicted Thomas with the other apostles, though according to a later recension, Thomas only arrived in Jerusalem after the Mother of God’s funeral. The Old Believers’ held on to this distinctive feature found in the ancient version, as represented on the icon here (Thomas is shown twice: on the extreme right standing by the bed of the Mother of God and in the top right-hand corner, flying upon a cloud). Other depictions on the icon also reflect the original ancient text: the composition includes Saint James of Jerusalem, the Lord’s brother (behind the Mother of God’s bed, holding a censer), Timothy of Edessa, Dionysius the Areopagite and Hierotheos of Athens (in the archways, in the third row), and also the wives and maidens of Jerusalem (in the archways, right and left). The soul of the Mother of God is depicted in the form of a swaddled baby in the arms of Christ; above, in the centre of the composition, is the Mother of God seated on a throne in heavenly glory and being exalted by angels. The energy of the composition is enhanced by miniature painting of the finest quality which conveys the spiritual animation of each character. Thanks to its immaculate state of preservation, this historic artefact fully reflects the conception of the artist and may rightfully be considered a genuine masterpiece of late Russian icon painting.
EGYPT, A SILVER TETRADRACHM OF PTOLEMY I, signed by the Master Δ, Alexandreia, ca. 305-285 BC, 14.269g, 12h. Svoronos 255. Old cabinet tone. Perfectly centered and struck on a broad flan. Among the finest known. Superb extremely fine. Acquired privately from Tradart Ptolemy was very early in his use of his portrait as a coin type. This is not inconsistent with the Egyptian tradition of divine kingship, but coinage was a Greek institution used primarily by the Macedonian ruling caste: thus Ptolemy`s innovation remains both shrwed and daring. His portrait is one of the most distinctive on all of ancient coinage, not only for its blunt, ungainly features but for the frank and forceful charcater it reveals. The aegis is a divine attribute, and the reverse type reinforces the Jovian identification.
A SILVER DENARIUS OF M. JUNIUS BRUTUS, Rome, ca. 54 BC, 3.455g, 7h. Crawford 433/2. Old cabinet tone. Perfectly centered. A pair of powerful portraits. Extremely fine. Tradart November 1993 lot 179; The Numismatic Auction 1983 (2) lot 251; former Fred Knobloch (1907-1994) collection, Stack`s May 1978 lot 512 A decade prior to his participation in the assassination of Julius Caesar, Brutus held the office of moneyer. He produced an interesting coinage clearly illustrating his admiration for those of his ancestors who had distinguished themselves in the defense of liberty against the forces of tyranny. The head of L. Junius Brutus recalls the expulsion of the Tarquins from Rome and the establishment of the Republic in 509 BC, whilst that of Servilius Ahala commemorates the deeds of another ancestor who, as master of horse in 439 BC, saved the state by his assassination (with a concealed dagger!) of the traitor Spurius Maelius.
