The Dugards of Worcestershire From the 1600s, the Dugard family lived in Impney and a `farm book` records the family members and their activities. The first readable account dates from 1661 and mentions John Dugard. His father Henry was the first master of Bromsgrove School. John Dugard cut down trees in Feckenham Forest to run sheep there, and sold the wood to the Droitwich salt-makers. John married Margaret Cowper and their 3 sons and 1 daughter were all born at Impney, though two of the children died when young. Their son John prospered and married Elizabeth Penrice (August 1660), with whom he had 10 children who went to various villages around Droitwich. Their son Thomas married Mary Geeves (as inscribed on the present lot) and went to Martin Court Farm (at Martin Hussingtree), and their son Thomas went to Grafton near Upton Warren. He married a distant Quaker cousin, Mary Siddons, whose father was an ironmaster at Coalbrookdale, and they farmed at Rockingham Hall, Hagley, both were wealthy.

Lot 114

A fine French silver Butterfield pattern sundial. Chapotot, Paris, circa 1700. The elongated octagonal plate with three hour scales for 40, 45 and 50 degrees, the outer IIII-XII-VIII divided into quarter-hours, the inner two 5-12-7 divided into half hours, the centre with engraved vignette of a townscape within curved band signed CHAPOTOT A PARIS with scallop shell and trumpet horn motif above, with glazed four-point compass and hinged bird engraved adjustable gnomen calibrated in degrees for elevation to the outer edge, the underside engraved with latitudes for twenty cities including Londres, Cracouie, Copenhague, Strasbourg, Rome, Madrid, Stokholme, Amsterdam and Hambourg the compass base further decorated with a leafy rosette, 5.8cm (2.25ins) wide; in original leather case with red velvet lined interior applied with a an old label for TESSIERS LTD, LONDON the cover with pique work crown motif within line border, 6.5cm (2.5ins) wide overall. Louis Chapotot worked ‘Sur Le Quay de l’Horloge, Ile de La Cite, A La Sphere, Paris’ circa 1670-1700. He was appointed Master of the ‘Corporation des Fondeurs’ and is thought to have latterly taken his son into partnership who may have subsequently continued the business for a short period during the early years of the 18th century. This type of portable pocket sundial was devised by Michael Butterfield, an English Instrument maker who settled in Paris around 1685. By the end of the century Butterfield’s workshop was also located on the ‘Le Quay de l’Horloge’ hence he would have known Louis Chapotot as a neighbour. The pique work crown to the lid of the case of the current lot appears original and depicts a crown with alternating diamond and lozenge collar beneath rosettes to the coronet. Although very closely related to the Royal Crown, the substitution of rosettes in place of fleur-de-lys to the coronet suggests that the crown belonged to one of the ‘Great Officers of the Crown’, a group of trusted nobles who held the most important administrative offices within the Court. With this in mind it would be reasonable to suggest that the current lot was purchased directly from Chapotot (who was based just around the corner from The Louvre) by an important member of the Royal Court.

The Model Railway System of Josué Droz, 1925-35Completely made by hand: An absolutely unique masterpiece of Swiss precision engineering. and a spectacular work of a lifetime! For centuries, La Chaux-de-Fonds in the Swiss Neuchâtel Jura has been regarded as an instrument-making center of excellence, producing precision engineering, clocks, toys and musical boxes of the highest quality, some of which are now exhibited in the famous horology museum in La Chaux-de-Fonds. The La Chaux-de-Fonds district is also the birthplace of the renowned horologist Pierre Jaquet-Droz, whose three `androids` can be seen in nearby Neuchâtel. It is not by chance, then, that the name of the maker of this unique model railway system now offered for sale, is Josué Droz, a citizen of La Chaux-de-Fonds. Although we do not know the precise family connection between the two Droz engineers, the spirit of the master is evident in this remarkable model railway! Born in 1895, Josué Droz began work on the construction of his scale model railway station installation modeled on the SBB - Schweizer Bundesbahn (Swiss Federal Railways) - when he was thirty. As a trained cabinet maker, he was familiar with precision modeling and devoted every free minute of his time to his meticulously-planned master work. It was not completed until 1936, eleven years and an unbelievable 18,000 man hours later. His complete railway station system, faithful to the original in even the smallest detail, remains absolutely unique throughout the world, surpassing the finest commercial brands in its precision and quality. Droz designed and built the system himself, sometimes in consultation with well-known Swiss engineers and specialists. The system is designed to a scale of 1:30 (48 mm gauge), thoroughly thought out and executed with outstanding skill and care, and lacks absolutely nothing when it comes to originality and accuracy of detail. Its overall size is an impressive 6 x 16 meters (96 sq. meters/approx. 1,000 sq feet)! In November 1936, whilst the effects of the world recession were still being felt, the complete system was exhibited for fourteen days by the municipal Documentation Office for Trade and Engineering, the first and only time that it has been seen by the public, in the old Apollo Cinema Theatre in La Chaux-de-Fonds. Since that time, the complete system has rested in sturdy custom-built upholstered wooden boxes, protected from humidity and cold, in the attic of its creator in No. 17 Rue de la Réformation, La Chaux-de-Fonds, until it was discovered by ATB and made known to the public. This important model railway represents the golden age ideal of a truly public transportation system which transformed the world during the first part of the 20th century. Words are not enough to describe the precision, accuracy, perseverance and patience, the great talent, which Josué Droz devoted to creating his masterpiece. Greater Antilles, Cuba, Jamaica and Hispaniola (A Chart of the Windward Passage Between the Islands of Jamaica Hispaniola and Cuba with the Other Passages to the Northward of Hispaniola…), Faden, London, 1795. 30 x 22.5”. (BW) This large-scale sea chart shows Hispaniola, Jamaica, and parts of Cuba and the Bahamas. It depicts the Windward Passage, the important shipping lane between Cuba and Hispaniola that connects the Caribbean Sea with the Atlantic. The chart is based on the "journals, observations and draughts" of Charles Roberts, Master in the Royal Navy, as well as the work in Antoine-Hyacinthe de Chastenet Puysegur`s Pilote de l`Isle de St. Domingue and Jacques Nicolas Bellin`s Description des debouquements qui sont au nord de l`Isle de St. Domingue. The coastlines feature great detail of topography, soundings, shoals, and safe anchorages. Four coastal approach views are depicted in the interior of Cuba, and a small inset at left shows detail of the Morant Cays, four small islands southeast of Jamaica. At top left is a chart of Charles Roberts` astronomical observations. Printed on heavy paper with light offsetting and a few archivally repaired centerfold separations. There is a tiny hole near the centerfold, and two short tears that just enter neatline at bottom that have all been archivally repaired. There is an interesting old manuscript ink notation below Hispaniola. (B)
