Two African Wooden War Clubs, one in the form of a Knobkerrie with a pointed top, 63cm, the other with a triangular style head, 57cm (2)approval happens closer to the sale date, both appear to be in good condition, the flatter club, has a few natural cracks within the wood. otherwise generally good condition,
A LATE 19TH CENTURY ZULU KNOBKERRIE, of typical form, the tapering haft bearing white metal plaque engraved 'ZULU CLUB From EKOWE FORT 1879', the bottom of the haft pierced for a thong, 79cm long over all. Head and haft with splits, old sliver of wood inserted in to split in head. Following the defeat of British forces at Isandlwana, Colonel Charles Pearson was besieged by a large Zulu force at Fort Ekowe/Eshowe. He prepared a deserted church, school and missionary's house as a base to defend against the Zulu attack. The siege lasted from 23rd January to the 3rd April 1879 when the relief force arrived, led by the Pipers of the 91st Highlanders.

HERBERT, 2-24TH FOOT South Africa Medal, clasp 1877-8-9, correctly engraved 1309 Pte H Herbert 2-24th Foot, condition GVF+; with cap badge, button and belt buckle of the 24th Foot; sold with a Knobkerrie, which the recipient likely brought home as a souvenirHenry Herbert was born in Kingston, London, in 1838. He attested on the 11th of September 1860, aged 22, giving his occupation as Labourer. He served with the 2-24th Foot in Mauritius for five years and five months, East Indies for seven years and seven months, in Gibraltar for seven months, a period of four months at home and one year eleven months in South Africa.Discharged at Secunderabad, India, on the 24th of January 1881 after 21 years and 117 days of service. He excelled as a soldier, had never been tried by district court martial and was in possession of the LSGC medal.
