Pear Tree Press A collection of forty-four Pear Tree Press printer's proofs, incl. woodcuts, lithos., col. copper engs., b & w collotype reproductions etc., some with printer James Guthrie's marks or initials, one signed in pencil by artist Reginald Hallward, approx. 340 x 210 mm and smaller, together with 2pp. autograph letter signed from Reginald Hallward to poet and dramatist Gordon Bottomley. The Pear Tree Press was founded by James Guthrie at Pear Tree Cottage, Ingrave, in Essex in 1899, and is therefore one of the oldest existing private presses. An artist, typographer, and printer, Guthrie was particularly interested in intaglio printing, wood engraving and bookplate design: 'With a comparatively light equipment, the intaglio plate in its simple form and in combination affords opportunities for the employment of gold and silver and colours, which extend far beyond the ordinary practice of printing. I could not claim to have invented it, but found and developed it for myself, and, so far as I am aware, am the only printer since Blake who has gone aside from the regular tradition to work with plates' (Tomkinson, p.142). Reginald Hallward, painter, stained glass artist, illustrator and designer, set up his own private press, The Woodland Press, as well as providing illustrations for his friend, James Guthrie's Press. Gordon Bottomley was also involved in producing work for the Pear Tree Press. Hallward's letter to Bottomley urges him to visit an exhibition in London, and mentions a proposed visit to James Guthrie. (45)
