A fine regimental desk seal c.1794-1802, with bloodstone intaglio cut with the arms of the York Hussars and the initial 'I', secured by gilt metal on a turned ivory handleQty: (1)NOTESProvenance: Collection of Jack Webb (1923-2019), London. In June 1793 Prince Lubnoviski a Pole offered to form a corps of four squadrons dressed in Polish style wearing a scarlet kourka (jacket) with green facings and a white chapska (shako) surrounded by a black turban, with cloak, boots and carry a sword, a carbine and pair of pistols. In May 1794 Lt. Col. Irvine was authorised to arm and equip these men and in August Irvine was made Commandant. They fought at Boxtel, where they were credited for charging at the enemy three times and were later disbanded on 24 July 1802. The 'I' engraved on the seal probably represents Irvine.

Expanded description, Rare Wedgwood Etruria cameo plaque 6.5cm depicting Hope, Peace, Art and Labour, modelled by William Hackwood, ( see below), together with a Leeds pottery black basalt plaque 7cm, and a Wedgwood & Bentley intaglio, 2.25 cmNote the blue plaque medallion is of Australian interest being made of clay dug in January 1788 on the orders of Captain Arthur Phillip who reached 'the first harbour in the world' on 21 January. The clay was sent to Sir Joseph Banks, President of the Royal Society, and forwarded by him to Wedgwood. Finished medallions were sent to Banks in November 1789 and reached Botany Bay in May 1790.

It is possible that he may have been an apprentice in the workshop of Castellani, an idea supported by the clear similarities in styles and subject matter. In 1846 he opened his own shop in Florence, later moving to a Renaissance palazzo at 20 Piazza di Spagna, next to the Spanish Steps in Rome. Today the building is a national monument and regarded as one of the most important historic buildings in Rome. An early 19th century sardonyx cameo depicting Emma, Lady Hamilton by Filippo Rega (1761 - 1833), depicted in profile with her hair in the Grecian style, signed 'Rega' on Greek, 2.8cm high, in a ropetwist silver-gilt brooch, 3.6cm high Filippo Rega (1761 - 1833) was an Italian engraver, medalist and student of Giovanni Pichler. He studied in Rome under the Pichlers before moving to Naples in 1787. Emma, Lady Hamilton also lived in Naples at this time, having been sent there to marry Sir William Hamilton in 1786.
