3rd-7th century AD. A plano-convex banded agate appliqué with intaglio motif of Hermes(?) advancing with fronds in one hand and fish in the other, legend to the border '????? CMOICI'. 2.15 grams, 22mm (1"). Acquired on the London art market in the late 1980s. The use of 'lunate sigma' (C) indicates that the text was written after the 4th century BC when this character was popularised as an alternative to the standard form of the letter (?"). Very fine condition.

Property of a London gentleman; acquired by his father in the 1970s; thence by descent. Very fine condition. A large wearable size.
