An early 19th century cameo necklace and earring suite The graduated collet-set oval shell cameos, depicting figures from Classical mythology including Venus and Cupid, Hermes holding a caduceus and twin babies, the goddess Hygieia and a discus player, linked by triple chain connectors, pendent earrings en suite depicting the muses, largest cameo 4.8 x 3.8cm, lengths: necklace shortest strand 42.7cm, earring 6.1cm, fitted case (2) The interest in cameos was burgeoning in the 17th and 18th centuries and came to its apex during the Napoleonic period (1799-1815). These decades saw yet another revival of classical antiquity largely pushed by the political transformation of France into an empire. Educated members of society displayed an outward appreciation for the classics, notably the Roman Empire, through cultural and aesthetic choices. While in proceeding centuries the study of cameos had been predominantly a male-dominated interest, the late 18th to early 19th century saw the integration of these classical themes, including in cameos, into women's dress and jewellery fashion. This necklace for instance has a heavily female theme in the nature of the mythological figures and scenes represented. Despite the Napoleonic Wars, this classical revival made its way to Britain, in part driven by the Empress Joséphine (1763-1814), widely regarded as a source of fashionable inspiration across Europe. As a portable sculpture or portrait, cameos offered an intersection of culture and tourism meaning well travelled Victorians could buy jewellery souvenirs and through personal adornment demonstrate their erudition.

Islamic Interest: An early volume of the Book of Hermes the Wise, a text on incantations, magical spells, and medicinal potions used to treat diseases. Its author, Hermes Trismegistus (Hermes Trismegistus), was a famous mythological figure in the classical Greek, Roman, and Islamic worlds, and a vast body of writings has been attributed to him. The book is divided according to the order of the Arabic letters in the alphabetical system (alif, ba, jim, dal, etc.). The discussion of each letter begins with a diagnosis of an adult male who is the author of the letter and then moves on to a prescribed treatment. Islamic date for 1780.

A VW Beetle based Trike registration number Q612 VAF (Not transferable). Recorded at the DVLA as a "Runninwild", she was first registered on the 1st June 1997 and is recorded as 1200 cc., the last M.O.T. test expired, it seems, on the 18th July 2011. The trike is currently SORN'd and the V5C is now present. We are informed by the vendor that this rather unusual three-wheeled motorcycle was constructed as an R & R project on an Aircraft carrier in the Falkland Islands during the Falklands War, presumably therefore either on H.M.S. Invincible or H.M.S. Hermes. A previous owner is understood to have toured the continent with her, towing a small trailer. As can be seen, she has a Motorcycle-style front end and a VW Beetle air cooled rear end/transaxle/running gear. No engine is included with the trike, but a suitable engine should not prove too difficult to source. The vendor had, at vast expense, commissioned a much modified and balanced four cylinder air-cooled engine for the machine with oversized barrels and pistons, an up-rated camshaft and breathing through twin Dellorto carburettors. He states that very few vehicles, with the exception of potent motorcycles, were quicker off the line. The engine can be made available to the successful purchaser, if required, for £2,500. The trike, which has obviously been road-legal, is sold for restoration/ recommissioning and should make an exciting spring project. As with all motor vehicles sold through our auctions, this machine is sold in its current condition and all vehicles should be inspected in person prior to bidding. N.B. BUYERS PREMIUM ON THIS LOT 10% + V.A.T. (Total Premium 12% plus specific on-line bidding fees).
