Hermes Silk Scarf: Thalassa by Pierre Peron Original Issue Very Rare. This is an original issue silk scarf - Thalassa- made by Hermes, Paris; designed by Pierre Peron, it is also signed (and the design is believed to be from 1973). The scarf has been stored and kept safely since it was received (new) in 1984. In perfect condition, it is as good as the day it was issued, and is sold with the original box, original tissue and original ribbon. Provenance: The story behind the scarf is one of interest: a gift to the owner from the 'Aide de Camp du Palais du Prince Rainier III de Monaco' (Chief of Staff of Prince Rainier III's Palace, Monte Carlo, Monaco). It was a gift in thanks for translation work done for the Palace in 1984 and the organisation of an international conference. A written signed confirmation of this provenance is provided by the owner with supporting documentation. Please see accompanying images.

Euclid.- Proclus (Diadochus) In Primum Euclidis Elementorum librum Commentariorum, first edition in Latin, translated by Francisco Barozzi, collation: *-**4 A-Z a-o4 complete with final colophon leaf, woodcut vignette of Hermes and Athena holding a phoenix on title with full-page woodcut portrait of the translator within historiated border on verso, woodcut initials and fine decorative woodcut chapter-headings, diagrams, woodcut printer's device on colophon, old blue ink stamps to title, generally a clean and crisp copy, small leather book-label of Haven O'More, modern boards, spine ends chipped, folio (296 x 198mm.), Padua, Gratiosi Perchacini, 1560.⁂ Rare and important commentary on the first book of Euclid: 'the earliest contribution to the history of mathematics' (DSB). It was translated into Latin by Francesco Barozzi, a humanist, mathematician and astronomer, whose translation provides a text substantially more complete and correct than the editio princeps, printed at Basel in 1533, since it is based on superior manuscripts. Barozzi finished the translation at the age of only 22, having already lectured on Sacrobosco's Sphaera at the University of Padua in 1559. Later he translated the work of Hero and Archimedes and wrote a Cosmographia, but was condemned for sorcery by the Inquisition in 1587 for having caused torrential rainstorms in his native Crete. Original vintage World War Two propaganda poster: Watch Your Talk For His Sake - Never mention arrivals, sailings, cargoes, or destinations to anybody. Dynamic black and white image of a sailor wearing waterproof clothing standing in the crow's nest of a ship and looking out through binoculars with the text in red and black letters below. Excellent condition. During the Second World War, German U-boats sank nearly 14.7 million tons of Allied shipping, which amounted to 2,828 ships (around two thirds of the total allied tonnage lost). The United Kingdom alone suffered the loss of 11.7 million tons, which was 54% of the total Merchant Navy fleet at the outbreak of the Second World War. 32,000 merchant seafarers were killed aboard convoy vessels in the war, but along with the Royal Navy, the convoys successfully imported enough supplies to allow an Allied victory. The Royal Navy suffered heavy losses in the first two years of the war, including the carriers Courageous, Glorious and Ark Royal, the battleships Royal Oak and Barham and the battlecruiser Hood in the European Theatre, and the carrier Hermes, the battleship Prince of Wales, the battlecruiser Repulse and the heavy cruisers Exeter, Dorsetshire and Cornwall in the Asian Theatre. Of the 1,418 men aboard Hood, only three survived its sinking. Over 3,000 people were lost when the converted troopship Lancastria was sunk in June 1940, the greatest maritime disaster in Britain's history. There were however also successes against enemy surface ships, as in the battles of the River Plate in 1939, Narvik in 1940 and Cape Matapan in 1941, and the sinking of the German capital ships Bismarck in 1941 and Scharnhorst in 1943Year of printing: 1940s, country of printing: UK, designer: Unknown, dimensions (cm): 51x34.
