A POLYCHROME STUCCO FRESCO FRAGMENT, YUAN TO MING DYNASTYChina, 1279-1644. The rectangular panel painted with two celestial maidens, one playing the pipa and the other the cymbals, wearing elaborate headdresses and long flowing robes, richly adorned in jewelry, the arm and flute of a third musician can be seen towards the left edge, all painted in polychrome pigments highlighting the gilded ornamentation with gesso relief.Provenance: From an old Canadian private estate. A noted collector, acquired from the above. Condition: Laid down on a wooden base, otherwise in original and unrestored condition. Losses, wear, weathering, cracks and erosion.Dimensions: Size 113.5 x 52 cmThe style of painting in this fresco recalls that of the mid-eighth century temple painting style. Largely ignored by the court and literati circles, this 'flowing water and scudding clouds' (xingyun liushui) manner, reminiscent of the Tang dynasty painter Wu Daozi, was ideal for painting religious figures. Unlike earlier modes stressing precise contours, the whirling spiritual energy of this brushwork gives the impression of qi, or inner life. This animated style has been popular with builders and decorators of Buddhist temples ever since.Literature comparison: Compare the sculpture and murals in Cave 57 of the Mogao grottos at Dunhuang, illustrated in Roderick Whitfield et. al., Cave Temples of Mogao, Art and History on the Silk Road, Los Angeles, 2000, p. 37, as well as the murals of bodhisattva in caves 172 and 199, illustrated in Chang Shuhong, The Art Treasures of Dunhuang, Hong Kong and New York, 1981, paying close attention to the garments and ornamentation of the figures.Auction result comparison: Compare with a closely related, but smaller fresco fragment with a single celestial maiden, at Sotheby's New York, Important Chinese Art, 11 September 2019, lot 816, sold for USD 37,500.
A WOOD NETSUKE-OKIMONO OF A DEER AND HORSE WITH SMALL MONKEYSJapan, Edo/Tokyo, second half of 19th centuryFinely stained and carved in sukashibori (openwork), the deer and horse standing side by side on a bed of leaves, looking in opposite directions, each with the right front leg slightly raised, the details such as mane, tail, and antlers neatly detailed, two small monkeys are lying on the horse’s back, one wearing a shishimai mask and costume, the other holding cymbals in his hands, the deer, horse, and unmasked monkey with double-inlaid eyes, the netsuke-okimono with many ‘natural’ himotoshi due to the openwork nature of the piece.HEIGHT 3.8 cmCondition: Excellent condition with only minor surface wear.Provenance: European collection. The animals depicted in this netsuke-okimono are rife with symbolism, much derived from Chinese language and culture. A monkey riding a horse, for example, expresses the wish for quick promotion, whereas the deer symbolizes longevity and riches, the Chinese character for deer (Lu) also meaning ‘good fortune’ and ‘government salary’.Literature comparison: A related netsuke of a monkey and horse, dated to the 19th century, is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, accession number 10.211.1648.

Appleby (1915-2007) and Elinor Appleby (1920-2020), longtime donors to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Mrs. Appleby had a particular interest in Asian art, and she and her husband supported the Department of Asian Art as well as the Fund for The Met, providing for important acquisitions and institutional initiatives.Ogawa Haritsu (formerly often referred to outside Japan by his alternative name of Ritsuo) was among the first Japanese lacquer artists to establish an independent reputation outside of the hereditary craft dynasties of Kyoto, Edo, and Kanazawa. Following an early career as a haiku poet, he is thought to have first turned his attention to lacquer design in middle age and soon attracted a wide following thanks to his novel choice of subject matter and pioneering and imaginative use of unusual materials; at some point after 1710 he was hired by Tsugaru Nobuhisa (1669-1747), lord of a domain in northern Japan, for whom he worked until 1731.Auction comparison:Compare a related but smaller inlaid wood box and cover signed Ritsuo and with the same pink seal Kan, but depicting a different subject, at Van Ham, Asiatische Kunst, 9 June 2016, Cologne, lot 2263 (sold for 10,320 EUR). John Bonham / Led Zeppelin: a 36 inch Paiste symphonic gong used on stage at the Royal Albert Hall 9th January 1970,a hammered metal gong with original Paiste Chinese logo to the front top and bottom, with large white stencil Zeppelin on the back and various airway stickers including Pan America and Northwest Orient Airlines, the top rim with two suspension holes and attached rope, accompanied by original auction receipt, diameter 36in (91.4cm)Footnotes:Provenance:This gong was purchased from a Chelsea auction house in 1982. At that time Led Zeppelin had an office nearby and it was following the untimely death of John Bonham. It has been identified as the one John Bonham used on stage at The Royal Albert Hall in 1970, illustrated in the image taken by a fan as shown in the catalogue. This early concert is one of the first that was professionally filmed and is available to view on the YouTube link below.Legendary drummer Bonham is seen by many as the greatest rock drummer. His style and stage presence are as synonymous as Keith Moon's were for The Who. According to Carmine Appice, drummer with American rock band Vanilla Fudge, it was he who inspired Bonham to incorporate a gong into his drum kit. Led Zeppelin had supported Vanilla Fudge during their first tour of North America in 1968. Appice says, I brought the gong into rock and then Bonzo brought it in with Led Zeppelin, Carl Palmer had gongs, everybody had gongs, it became like a staple. The two China cymbals on a boom stand, I brought that in and even in Spinal Tap, you had a gong and two Chinese cymbals. Only six months later Led Zeppelin were equal billing with Vanilla Fudge showing the speed at how their popularity grew. This gong is an earlier Paiste model as it has the original Chinese symbols for the brands logo. There are also signs of use as it is blackened. John Paul Jones, referring to the practice of setting fire to the gong at a dramatic point in the band's set said, He did that more or less every night. His roadie Mick Hinton had to set it alight. I think he used lighter fuel, and it was quite dangerous... Additionally due to the scale of the percussion piece, it appears that it did not have a dedicated flight case or bag when taken on tour. It was simply labelled with a stencil Zeppelin had airway tickets stuck to it (which are still attached), and put into the plane's hold.https://youtu.be/r9-42mu1D9YFor further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
