Ca. 618-907 AD. A finely modelled terracotta figure of a female musician playing cymbals. She is depicted standing and attentive, wearing a long dress with a cream top and a long, flaring green skirt. Her facial features consist of thin, slightly arched eyebrows, narrow eyes, a pointed nose, and a small mouth painted with red pigment. Her hair is neatly combed into a hairstyle consisting of a high topknot. This piece has been precisely dated by means of a Thermo Luminescence analysis carried out by Ralf Kotalla, an independent German Laboratory. The samples collected date the piece to the period reflected in its style, whilst also showing no modern trace elements. A set of nine Tibetan tsakalis, initiation cards, hand painted with peaceful and wrathful deities, auspicious symbols and ritual implements, painted on card, 10cm x 8cm; a Tibetan damaru drum, of double hoof form, united at the centre with a copper band inset with semi precious stones with silk attachment, 6.3cm high; and a pair od Buddhist tingsha (Ting shags) hand cymbals, each decorated with four shou symbols, united by a leather strip, 6.5cm diameter

Two wind vanes, late 20th century, comprising: an Indonesian example, wood, bamboo, coloured tinplate, wire, approx. 43cm high, 54cm wide; and Rock Singer, painted wood, plastic card, spring, safety pin, nylon thread, approx. 55.5cm high; together with: a cowhide and wood rotating drum, 41.5cm high; a Whirlybird flying propeller toy, other propeller toys; and Peasant Dance, Madeira Portugal, bamboo, wood, wire, wool and cotton textiles, raffia, tape, bottle tops, approx. 51cm high (lot) Sir Nicholas Goodison noted: As the wind rotates the vane the three loosely jointed clappers on the shaft strike the bamboo notes. The stronger the wind the faster the notes. The shaft also drives the peasant to raise and lower his arm so that the cow too raises its head as the peasant pulls it. The vane would normally be mounted on a rod or peg on a building – the upright shaft is hollow bamboo – and the vane would turn to reflect the direction of the wind. It wouldn’t last long in a tornado. The peasant appears to be sowing or tilling and the weather is clearly hot. Rock singer: Pulling down on the yellow card raises the playing arm and tilts the guitar. Any rhythm can be played, from short regular strums to grand sweeps in which the guitar moves more dramatically. Pulling the yellow card also creates the music as the blue disc, from which the separate threads lead to arm and guitar, strikes the four hanging metal strips which are tuned to four different notes. This hanging toy is akin to jumping jacks. The singer is stylish, fit for Glastonbury or Hyde Park, with his dark glasses and safety pin ear-ring. We will never know what sort of voice he has but we are probably better off not knowing and the lack of a microphone is a blessing. Peasant Dance: There are five peasants, each with percussion instruments. At the top a male peasant clashes Brisa bottle-top cymbals. Below him two male and two female peasants with castanets on their backs jump up and down, activating the castanets, as the handle at the bottom raises and lowers the striped bamboo sleeve and its platform on which they stand. Beneath the platform are four pairs of Brisa bottle tops which clash together if the movement is vigorous enough. It all makes a rhythmic party noise. Initially originating in Tibet, Cham became a practice that covered large areas of the Himalayas. Held during ceremonial festivities at local monasteries, monks wearing these costumes were understood to be invoking the spirit of the costume they adorned. Cham costumes were elaborate and consist of large papier-mâché masks, fine silk with appliqué and embroidery, and decorative footwear. Coupled with sounds of gyaling, cymbals and drums these coordinated dances displayed a dramatic and spirited portrayal of ritual deity invocation. Wearing the chitipati costume would have served to supplicate the protective energies associated with these skeletal beings and provoked reminders of the impermanence of all things. Considered embodiments of the deity themselves, each element of the costume is thoughtfully designed. The five pointed crown of skeletons and parasol finial surmounting the terrifying gaze and wide gaping mouth of the face is deliberately fearsome. The embroidered silks decorated with severed heads and skulls at the top and a rocky terrain on the hem below with a ritual apron around the waist are layered to exhibit fluttering while in motion. Compare a similar papier- mâché mask with parasol finial illustrated on HAR 53077 and another wrathful deity costume on HAR 53074, both which are from Mongolia.
