In the catalogue entry for this work from its exhibition in 1896 Goodwin wrote, |Sinbad merely mentions the island in one of his voyages, but the title is a very suggestive one. Dancing Faun, late 19th century, black and white chalk on dark brown wove paper, full length study after a classical sculpture of a male nude playing the crotala (pair of cymbals) and working a scabellum (clapper) with his right foot, 56 x 33 cm (22 x 13 ins), mounted, framed and glazedQty: (1)NOTESAn accomplished study after the famous life-size ancient Hellenistic marble statue which was first recorded in 1665 as part of the collection of the Grand Duke of Tuscany in Florence; in 1688 it was recorded as being in the Tribuna of the Uffizi, Florence, and in September 1800 the sculpture was sent to Palermo along with other treasures to avoid plunder by the French army, returning to the Tribuna in 1803. Two other versions were excavated in Rome in the 1630s, and casts were made of the Uffizi faun from the 1680s onwards, an example of which is in the Royal Academy in London.

Attributed to Paul Brou (Dutch, fl. 19th century), a Continental sculpted white marble group, Bacchanal of infant satyrs, late 19th century, the central figure of the infant Silenus on a donkey surrounded by further cavorting putti holding cups, grapes and thyrsi, the moulded socle inscribed PAUL BROU 51cm high, 113cm wideA group of the same subject and dimensions by Brou was offered at Sotheby's London, 20 March, 1992, lot 133Condition Report: Minor marks, knocks and scuffs overall consistent with age, and it is a little greyish in colour from dust or dirt.The marble is a little weathered especially to tops of heads, resulting in loss of definition in areas.There is a handful of areas of filling/restoration, including to the wrist of the putto with the cymbals and the upper arm of the putto raising the thyrsus, and one of the standing putti's feet. Two or three sections of the plith have been filled, possibly where previously damaged or as a result of irregularities in the marble. Small losses and nibbling to the plinth.There is a handful of minor chips, including to one of the putti's chalices and to one of the panther's ears. Condition Report Disclaimer
