Victorian Royal 1st Devon Yeomanry Cavalry Helmet.A fine and rare example of the Regimental pattern worn from 1852 until the introduction of busbies in 1871. The skull of the helmet is of black nap, whilst the front and neck peak is of polished patent leather edged with a Sheffield plate rim. A round the base of the skull is silvered strap. Surmounted by a ornate plume holders and white & scarlet horsehair plume. To the front is an elaborate Regimental device. A Garter strap, surmounted by a crown, is with an entwined VR Cypher to the centre. The strap is flanked by a wreath of half laurel and oak leaves. To the base a tri-part title scroll “Royal 1st Devon”, “Yeomanry”, “Cavalry”. Two flower head bosses support a velvet backed interlinked chin chain. The interior is with quilted wax cotton lining. The helmet retains a good shape, minor age wear.
