Wales Bord.), generally good very fine, with: - The recipient`s diary, detailing service from 8.8.1915 - 23.7.1916 - Buckingham Palace Condolence Slip - Record Office enclosure detailing the posthumous award for the 1914-15 Star to the recipient - S.W.B. cap badge - Silk 1914-1918 postcard and Regimental handkerchief (9) 14602 Corporal Robert James Hendrickson, born Newport, Monmouthshire, served on the Western Front with the 5th Battalion, South Wales Borders, killed in action during fighting at High Wood 29.7.1916, he is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France. A SCARCE MERCANTILE MARINE PAIR TO TORPEDO BADGE AND BAR RECIPIENT MR R. HENDRICKSON, MERCHANT NAVY British War and Mercantile Marine Medals (Robert Hendrickson), good very fine, with: - Original Torpedo Badge and Bar certificate dated 23.9.1918 - Original Authority to Wear War Medals for the Mercantile Marine Slip, dated 8.4.1921 - A.D. Jellicoe aluminum cigarette case, and vesta case (6) Mr Robert Hendrickson, born 1865, Noldervalle, Sweden, M.I.C. gives reference to Newport, Monmouthshire The Torpedo Badge was awarded to those whose ships had been sunk or damaged by torpedo or mine and had, subsequently, made another voyage on the articles of a British Vessel. Bars could be awarded to masters and seamen each time they were torpedoed or mined. It was authorized on 6.6.1918, the badge itself was made of red worsted as were the bars, they continued to be issued from 1919-1922 (Officers & Men of the Navy, Marines and Mercantile Marine, refer)
