Worc. .Yeo.), British War Medal (2209 Cpl. C.H. Coombs. Worc. Yeo.), extremely fine, together with an aluminium identity tag impressed `2209. C. Coombs. Wor.Y.` and a silver cigarette case engraved `C.H. Coombs` Birmingham 1908 2209 Corporal Cyril Henry Coombs (1887-1916), born in Saltley, Birmingham, formally an auctioneer before enlisting with The Queen`s Own Worcestershire Yeomanry, served during the Great War in the Egyptian Theatre with the Household Cavalry and Cavalry of the Line (including the Yeomanry and Imperial Camel Corps), Coombs was killed in action Egypt 23.4.1916 and is commemorated on the Jerusalem Memorial. el Qatiya, Sinai, 23.4.1916. This was a small and successful action undertaken by the Ottoman forces against the British who were scattered around el Qatiya and Bir el Dueidat. The Bedouins had tricked the British by hanging round the camp pretending to be friendly then killed and stripped the soldiers, crying `Finish British! Turks Kantara! Turks Port Said! Turks Cairo!` According to one account, there were dead men and horses everywhere. Men had been bayoneted under their blankets, others garrotted with thin baling wire used for horse fodder. The raid created panic in the British command and highlighted the need for a greater commitment to strengthening the defences of Romani, eventually leading to a battle at that place. 15 Officers and 187 other ranks of the Yeomanry were killed, wounded or taken prisoner.
