The collation of a complete example is [22],376pp. Besides fencing, the engravings show gymnastic training on the horse and various wrestling techniques. Johann Andreas Schmidt was a German fencing master born circa 1650 in Marienberg, Germany. Sometime after 1671 (or after 1675), he studied fencing under the fencing master Johann Georg and Johannes Georgius Bruchius in Amsterdam. Schmidt's impressive fencing abilities were illustrated by a story that in 1712, as a result of a bet of 10 ducats, armed only with a stick, he took on "six strong farmers" in Altdorf in the area of Nuremberg and defeated them all, thus winning the bet. The following year, in 1713, he established his own fencing school in Nuremberg. In 1721 Georg Wilhelm von Brandenburg-Bayreuth (1678-1726) the ruler of Bayreuth appointed Schmidt as a Page Fencing Master following the successful defeat and disarming of two fencing masters. He was awarded the appointment as a Page Fencing Master with a wage of 1,000 guilders. After the death of his patron probably after 1726, Schmidt returned to Nuremberg to continue his teachings. He then moved to teach in both Stuttgart and finally in Tübingen, where he died.

Rudolph Berger signed vintage postcard. He was one of the best opera singers of his time. He studied singing under Adolf Robinson in Brunn. He made his debut as baritone in 1896 at the Municipal Theatre of Brunn as Telramund in Lohengrin. Then till 1897 he was active at the Municipal Theatre of Olmutz and in 1898 he was engaged by the Berlin Court Opera. In 1901, 1906 and 1908 he appeared at Bayreuth Festival in Parsifal and Gotterdammerung. In 1908 he retired for a year and studied under Oscar Sanger, reappearing as a tenor in Lohengrin at a performance in Berlin in 1909. In 1913 he married the American soprano Marie Rappold. After guest performances, primarily, in Wagner's operas in Paris, London, Prague and Amsterdam as well as at the Vienna Court Opera, in 1913 he was engaged to sing at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. In his two seasons, he sang 24 performances of 8 roles, including Siegfried, Lohengrin, Walther, Parsifal, Tristan, and Tannhauser. His only non-Wagnerian role was Tamino in Die Zauberflote. WAGNER RICHARD: (1813-1883) German Composer. An unusual printed 8vo page annotated by Wagner, being the introduction to a publication relating to the composer's opera Tannhauser, the German text to the recto and verso of the page, removed from a First Edition work published by Schulthess of Zurich, August 1852. At the head of the first page Wagner has added the words 'Programm der Ouvertüre zu Tannhäuser' in his hand. A thin strip of sellotape staining to the left edge, not affecting the printed text or Wagner's holograph annotation. Some very light, minor creasing, about VG £1000 - 1500Tannhäuser und der Sängerkrieg auf Wartburg (1845) is an opera in three acts with music and text by Wagner, inspired by two German legends. The story centres on the struggle between sacred and profane love, and redemption through love, a theme running through much of Wagner's mature work. Wagner made a number of revisions of the opera throughout his life and was still unsatisfied with its format when he died. The most significant revision was made for the opera's premiere in Paris in 1861. The opera remains a staple of major opera house repertoire in the 21st century. Richard Wagner is primarily known for his operas (or 'music dramas' as some of his later works were known) and, unlike most opera composers, Wagner wrote both the libretto and music for each of his stage works. The composer revolutionised opera through his concept of the Gesamtkunstwerk ('total work of art') and described his vision in a series of essays published between 1849-52. Wagner's most important operas continue to be performed annually at the Bayreuth Festival, run by his descendants. The effect of Wagner's ideas can be traced in many of the arts throughout the 20th century; his influence spread beyond composition into conducting, philosophy, literature, the visual arts and theatre.
