Large WW2 German Naval Battle Flag (Reichskriegsflagge) Reputed to have Been Flown on the Fortified House, Omaha Beach, Normandy, standard pattern double sided Kriegsmarine battle flag with swastika to the centre and Iron Cross in corner. The edge with ink Kriegsmarine acceptance stamp. Some scattered moth holes and small section of damage to the top of one corner. Accompanying the flag is the following printed statement of provenance from the current vendor, “On the morning of June 6th 1944 (D DAY) at 06:30, elements of the 29th Division 116th Regiment together with 2nd and 5th Rangers attacked Dog Green Sector on Omaha Beach with horrendous numbers of casualties. Next to Dog Beach was Charlie Sector where before the war there was a privately owned house that had been built into the cliffs and was later to be known as The Fortified House. Initially on the occupation of France this house was occupied by German Infantry 716. In 1941 two Wurtzburg radar towers were erected on a piece of land jutting out to sea called Pointe la Percee not too far from the Fortified House. The radar pieces were controlled by the Kriegsmarine which was the naval arm of the German forces who by then had occupied the Fortified House. Three weeks before D DAY British Lancaster Bombers destroyed the radar towers although on D DAY the Kriegsmarine still remained in the Fortified House when a force of 2nd Rangers commanded by Lieutenant Gorensen attacked the cliffs by way of a very narrow footpath up from the beach. Even though they came under very heavy fire, by 13:00 The Fortified House had been cleared. The 2nd Rangers suffered 70% casualties in this exercise. In the 1990’s the house was demolished and the remains still lay on the beach below. The steps up into the rear basement are still intact as are two buildings in the rear garden which the Germans bult for ammunition storage. The flag which flew at the Fortified House was retrieved by the original owners in 1944 and was still in their care until my visit when their daughter who lived at St Pierre du Mont, a small hamlet near Pointe du Hoc kindly gave it to me once she knew of my interest in the area”. The flag measures 130 x 275cms.

Giovanni Kalabergo arrived in Banbury from Italy in around 1810 and later anglicised his name to John. He was, in 1851, also joined by his nephew who shared his name but took to calling himself William. Unfortunately William did not take kindly to his uncle's demanding demeaner and he sought to address the problem by hatching a plan to murder him and inherit his property. In January 1852 William bought himself a gun and joined his uncle on a normal work-related trip out of town. Whilst descending d Williamscot Hill William drew the gun and shot his uncle. On returning to Banbury he reported to the Police that they had been set-upon by bandits and that his uncle resisted (allowing William to escape) but had been shot.On investigation the Police suspected foul play as nothing had been stolen from Giovanni and William was in possession of the murder weapon together with ammunition and a blood-stained rag. William was subsequently trialled and found guilty of his uncle's murder. Whilst in prison awaiting execution he made two attempts to escape; the infamy of his trial was reported throughout the country and resulted in around 10,000 people attending his hanging, a folk ballad also records his fate:In Italy I was bred and born,At Oxford town I must die with scorn; For murdering my uncle as you may see,Has brought me to the gallows tree.Condition Report: Tube has been removed but pulley mechanism is present; will require tube, lines and weights/floats.
