Petty Officer Craven was serving aboard the trawler 703 Lord Wimborne which was on mine sweeping and general duties including landing Australian troops on the beaches at Gallipoli. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal for his actions on 25th April 1915 landing troops and ammunition at Gabe Tepe under enemy bombardment where approximately 600 troops lost their lives during the landing (original announcement in London Gazette Supplement dated 21st April 1917 included with the lot). On 25th April 1915 having off loaded wounded Australian soldiers to the battleship H.M.S Triumph and then returning to the beach with ammunition the Lord Wimborne was in close attendance as H.M.S. Triumph sustained German torpedo damage, and according to Craven`s hand written account went down in seven minutes. During the attempted rescue of some seven hundred men comprising crew and troops Arthur Craven jumped into the water from a life boat and during a half hour period rescued about twenty men; one or two of whom Craven recounts having `awful tussles` with. For his actions that day Petty Officer Craven was awarded the Humane Society Silver Medal for life saving. Both this medal and the DSM were presented to him by Queen Mary. The medals and associated ephemera have been passed down through Arthur Craven`s family.
