Cussack, R.N.); British War and Victory Medals, M.I.D. oak leaf (Payr. Lt. Cr. J. M. L. Cusack, R.N.); Defence and War Medals 1939-45; Russia, Order of St. Anne, 3rd Class breast badge, with swords, by Eduard, St. Petersburg, 36 x 36mm., gold and enamels, with manufacturer’s name on the reverse, ‘56’ gold mark on eyelet and kokoshnik mark on sword hilts; Czechoslovakia, War Cross, mounted as worn, together with a mounted set of related miniature dress medals, the St Anne in gold but with damage to reverse, and two ribbon bars, all contained in a leather carrying case, generally good very fine (9) £2,000-£2,400 --- James Meade Loughnan Cusack was born in Kilkenny in September 1880 and entered the Royal Navy as an Assistant Clerk in January 1898. Joining H.M.S. Doris a few months later, and having passing his Clerk’s examination, he witnessed active service off South Africa in the Boer War, including time ashore in Cape Colony (Medal & clasp). Next joining the Magicienne, he added a rare Africa General Service Medal for Jubaland to his accolades, and was advanced to Assistant Paymaster in September 1901. By the outbreak of hostilities in August 1914, Cusack was serving as a Paymaster in the cruiser Yarmouth, in which capacity he was present at the battle of Jutland. As part of the Third Light Cruiser Squadron, and in the company of her consort Falmouth, she fought several duels, scoring some hits on the Lutzow and Derfflinger, and possibly the Seydlitz too; one of these, according to an officer on the bridge, making ‘a topping target and it was very pleasant to see salvo after salvo of our 6-inch hitting her’. Indeed so enthusiastic was the Yarmouth’s gunnery department that new ‘ammunition was sent up the hoists with so much energy as to accumulate a dangerous amount at the top’. In Jellicoe’s subsequent despatch (London Gazette 15 September 1916, refers), Cusack was cited for good services in action and recommended for early promotion. He was duly appointed Staff Paymaster and, later still, awarded his 3rd Class Russian Order of St. Anne ‘for distinguished service rendered at the Battle of Jutland’ (London Gazette 5 June 1917). Moreover, he was awarded the Czechoslovakian War Cross (London Gazette 26 August 1921), an extremely rare accolade in terms of British recipients, let alone an R.N. officer. Cusack ended the Great War as a Paymaster Commander in the cruiser Suffolk. Having then served on the China Station in the gunboat Bee in the mid-1920s, he was placed on the Retired List as a Paymaster Captain in September 1930. Recalled on the renewal of hostilities in September 1939, he served at the R.N.H. Chatham and in H.M.S. Flora, a parent ship at Invergordon. He died in Honiton, Devon in September 1961, aged 80 years. Sold with copied research.

The document originally formed part of a Combat Report, the manuscript text stating, in part, 'I was on patrol with F/O Hart when.....we were told of E/A which was approaching Dover.......so we flew towards Dover, when over Deal I sighted E/A.....and flew at full boost towards it......F/O Hart & myself were both overhauling it but when we were about 1/2 mile behind E/A went into cloud. I continued on previous course and went under cloud which E/A entered. I saw E/A reappear on the other side......I pulled my nose up and gave it a long burst from underneath, the E/A went into shallow dive which brought me dead astern, at about 200 yds I gave it two more bursts which expended all my ammunition and I saw a black object come away from the port side. The E/A continued to dive and went into another cloud. I did not see it again'. The last three lines and signature of the document have at one stage been neatly cut away from the main body of text and the two are now lightly laid down together. CHAVEZ HUGO: (1954-2013) President of Venezuela 1999-2013. Signed manuscript diary, seven pages, folio, Fuerte Guaicaipuro, from 11th to 16th September 1974, in Spanish. Chavez writes his own training camp diary, in Charavalle, state of Miranda. Chavez starts his short period diary on Wednesday 11th stating in part `I was appointed squad commandant, with all the responsabilities attached to the post...Today I learned a lot about engineering military campaign...I have decided to start this short diary during the training camp, it will be a week and a new experience in my life.´ Thursday 12th `With the sound of the rain falling on the tent, breathing the smoke of my cigar, I can´t stop remembering intensively a woman. I take my thoughts back to the last time I saw her, last saturday, in Barinas...´. Friday 13th Chavez refers to his role as Che Guevara `I went later to a camp training activity where I had the role of the commandant Ernesto "Che" Guevara. We were having a guerrilla camp, ambushing the new soldiers, and we were singing protest songs. I enjoyed it a lot, I´m hoarse so much I screamed.... I can´t stop thinking in the same woman. What would she be doing now? I shouldn´t act as I do. She might be happy, and I really hope she is, but I feel "something" inside which put me in fire.´ Saturday 14th, interesting thoughts of Chavez who says knowing very well what he wants and refers once more to Ché `..The new soldiers will be scared tonight, swalling tear gas, creeping underneath the barbed wires, feeling the machine gun bullets close over their heads. "They will feel dying tonight"....I feel the shock of the rain against the ground and the cold in my feet, and I think in how is this life. Today is Saturday and I wonder what would the young people, same age as me, be doing somewhere else, those who live free, without sacrifices. For sure they will be having fun, in a disco with their girlfriends, at the cinema or anywhere else. If they would know what we are doing they would say we are crazy. But I am not crazy. I know very well what I want and what I do, and why I make this sacrifice. I remember now a thought of "Ché": "The present is of fight, the future belongs to us". Sunday 15th `...he suffered an ugly wound in his hand, he falled on the barbed wires full of despair due to the tear gas.... I don´t want to keep on writing, I am tired, I am going to think in my family and in the same woman. She might be thinking in me...´ Monday 16th, on his last training camp day Chavez states `I was the whole day shooting the Afag machine gun with war ammunition, when the new soldiers were crossing the area. It was really good shooting. The feeling and sound of the bursts of gunfire excites you and you don´t want to remove your finger from the shutter.´ Further ending with a predicting statement `It was a good week. It was a further step on the present fight which will transform in a victorious future.´ An excellent content diary on which Chavez expresses his thoughts and his future expectations. Boldly written in blue ink, with multiple corrections and side annotations. Small creasing and left border irregularly trimmed as a result of taken them out of the diary book. Also including Herma Marksman´s transcription. VGWith provenance from the private collection of Herma Marksman and with her own transcription. Herma Marksman: (1949- ) Born of a peasant woman and a German immigrant she was in her 30s when she met the future Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez, who was then married and in his twenties. She became his mistress. They both were students of socialism and idealistic and she helped him in his academic studies. After the failed 1992 coup attempt Chavez left both his first wife and mistress. Marksman will later repudiate Chavez, and described his government as imposing a "fascist dictatorship". She has written several essays and a book titled El Otro Chávez, "The other Chavez", describing her relationship with him.

This tiny force, comprising approximately three and a half companies of the Munsters, two 18-pounder guns of 118 battery, and a troop of the 15th Hussars, delayed the advance of an entire German Corps in fourteen hours of fierce fighting, surrendering only when compelled to by the exhaustion of their ammunition. The British force was surrounded, and the artillery had to work their guns with no cover and in close proximity to the enemy. Heavy casualties were suffered, among them Lieutenant Stewart-Cox who was wounded and taken prisoner. By the selfless gallantry of these men, British I Corps was enabled to withdraw in good order.

Lot 119

Korean War Victoria Cross winner Bill Speakman VC signed 2005 Military Far East cover. Set on A4 Page with picture of him with Johnson Beharry VC with corner mounts so can easily be removed if required. On 4 November 1951, during the Second Battle of Maryang-san, in the ridge known as Hill 217 in Marysang-san, when the section holding the left shoulder of the company's position had been seriously depleted by casualties and was being overrun by the enemy, Speakman, on his own initiative, filled his pockets with grenades going forward and pelting the Chinese with the grenades. Having thrown all of the grenades he had taken, he returned for more. Inspired by his actions six men joined him in collecting a pile of grenades and followed him in a series of charges. He broke up several enemy attacks, causing heavy casualties and in spite of being wounded in the leg and the shoulder continued to lead charge after charge. Such was the ferocity of the fighting that they ran low on ammunition, resorting to throwing stones and ration tins. The enemy was kept at bay long enough to enable his company to withdraw safely. The Press of the time nicknamed him the 'beerbottle' VC, something he disliked for fear that it suggested he and his colleagues drank beer while on duty; the beer was in fact used to cool gun barrels. Good condition. All autographs come with a Certificate of Authenticity. We combine postage on multiple winning lots and can ship worldwide. UK postage from £5.99, EU from £7.99, Rest of World from £9.99

Victoria Cross winner Capt Harold Ervine Andrews VC signed Evacuation from Dunkirk 50th ann WW2 cover. Set with photo and mint German wartime stamps on A4 Page with corner mounts so can easily be removed if required. For most conspicuous gallantry on active service on the night of the 31st May/1st June, 1940. Captain Ervine-Andrews took over about a thousand yards of the defences in front of Dunkirk, his line extending along the Canal de Bergues, and the enemy attacked at dawn. For over ten hours, notwithstanding intense artillery, mortar, and machine-gun fire, and in the face of vastly superior enemy forces, Captain Ervine-Andrews and his company held their position. The enemy, however, succeeded in crossing the canal on both flanks; and, owing to superior enemy forces, a company of Captain Ervine-Andrews' own battalion, which was despatched to protect his flanks, was unable to gain contact with him. There being danger of one of his platoons being driven in, he called for volunteers to fill the gap, and then, going forward, climbed on to the top of a straw-roofed barn, from which he engaged the enemy with rifle and light automatic fire, though, at the time, the enemy were sending mortar-bombs and armour piercing bullets through the roof. Captain Ervine-Andrews personally accounted for seventeen of the enemy with his rifle, and for many more with a Bren gun. Later, when the house which he held had been shattered by enemy fire and set alight, and all his ammunition had been expended, he sent back his wounded in the remaining carrier. Captain Ervine-Andrews then collected the remaining eight men of his company from this forward position, and, when almost completely surrounded, led them back to the cover afforded by the company in the rear, swimming or wading up to the chin in water for over a mile; having brought all that remained of his company safely back, he once again took up position. Throughout this action, Captain Ervine-Andrews displayed courage, tenacity, and devotion to duty, worthy of the highest traditions of the British Army, and his magnificent example imbued his own troops with the dauntless fighting spirit which he himself displayed. Good condition. All autographs come with a Certificate of Authenticity. We combine postage on multiple winning lots and can ship worldwide. UK postage from £5.99, EU from £7.99, Rest of World from £9.99

Mahronda), original; telegrams relating to the sinking of vessels and the award of his O.B.E. There is also an original type written statement, signed by William Hill, relating to how the S.S. Mahronda sank in 1942. Various other service books and paperwork are included, and some WW2 and later photographs of Captain Hill. Notes: according to the accompany paperwork and medallions, it would appear that Capt Hill commanded 3 vessels that were subsequently sunk die to enemy actively. A letter dated December 1940 mentions S.S. Mahratta, and the 2 silver medallions mention S.S. Mahronda and S.S. Mahseer, all of which sunk. Captain Hill successfully negotiated Mediterranean waters to deliver ammunition to Malta in June 1940. The award of his Mercantile Marine Medal and British War Medal are confirmed on official rolls. Condition: generally very good. The medals are all good, with the gilt finish to the O.B.E being intact, and just a little fading to the ribbons. There is a little verdigris to the 1939-45 star. The paper ephemera shows normal wear for documents of their age, but all documents are clear and readable.
