*Lewis Gun (Aircraft Mk III). A fine example of this famous gun, stamped Mod. 1914 - Lewis machine gun, manufactured by The Birmingham Small Arms Co. Ltd., England for Armes Automatiques Lewis Belgium, further stamped with numerous proof marks and numbered 44211, fitted with a Mk II trigger guard, for use with the aircraft gunner`s thick gauntlet as used on Hawker `Hind` and `Demon` aircraft, other types include the Fairey `Swordfish`, the butt with fruitwood holds, the rear support handle with leather guard, with rare 97 round ammunition drum, with muzzle flame damper, 43.25in (110cm) long, with Certificate of De-Activation dated 13-1-97, No. DA 21194. The Lewis machine gun was designed by Isaac Newton Lewis, an American citizen. Being rebuffed initially by the British War Department, Lewis approached the Belgian Government who took to the gun enthusiastically and production began, where it soon became known as `The Belgian Rattlesnake`. Following the outbreak of World War I in 1914, this lightweight machine gun was finally recognised by the British War Department and, under licence, production started at B.S.A. Very soon it was obvious that this weapon could be adapted for aeronautical use. Huge numbers were produced and the success of the Lewis ensured that it continued in use as an aircraft and ground defence weapon well into World War II. Few survive today, this fine example is a classic in its own right. (1)

During the First World War in 1915 Victor Lay was involved with the Gallipoli landings. He and a another soldier were carrying an ammunition case ashore when his assistant was shot. The weight of the case then pulled Lay under water, probably saving his life. Later, when shaving and the sun caught on his mirror alerting an enemy marksman of his whereabouts, and Victor Lay was wounded by a ricocheting bullet. He is also known to have taken part in nigh time operations laying tracks across the desert for troops to pass over the following day. WWII - The Home Guard an outstanding archive of original letters photographs and other documents and ephemera relating to the Home Guard including personal reminiscences anecdotes testaments etc a cyclostyled dossier marked `Secret` detailing the formation of a Home Guard Battalion [in Leicestershire] a formal photograph of the 4th Battn Essex Regiment Home Guard several other photographs (mainly copies of originals) and a large qty of transcripts of the letters. This archive was assembled for a book project on the Home Guard which has hitherto not come to fruition. The letters are from people who were in the Home Guard or their close relatives with reminiscences of the time. Some of the stories are quite literally hilarious giving further evidence that the events of the celebrated TV comedy `Dad`s Army` were not too far fetched from the truth - there is even one letter which suggests that the writer`s father was the original model for `Captain Mainwaring`. Many others identify themselves as role models for `Sgt Wilson` and `Private Pyke`. There is also a letter from a woman who was also a part of the Home Guard - even though women were not supposed to be able to join. Other anecdotes are serious and reflect the desperate reality which lay beneath the typically British humour of the time. A constant theme reflects how little real ammunition these men had to repel any threat of invasion by the Germans and underline how desperately close we came to being overrun by the Nazis - had these brave men been the last line of defence against the might of German firepower they would inevitably been annihilated. `...we went on parade one Sunday and were met by a Sergeant of the regular army to instruct us how to use the new army gas masks. We put them on and off a few times then the sergeant shouted `fall out you may smoke but when I give the command `gas` you will put on the masks as you have been shown.` `Eventually the command `gas` was shouted and we put the masks on. But one of the lads who was stood in front of me didn`t throw his fag away and put his mask on with his fag still in his mouth. Every time he breathed out it looked as though smoke was coming out of his ears...` `...I spent the whole night in a meadow with 24 cows guarding Wales against the Nazis armed with a walking stick...` `...we were once detailed to attack a neighbouring village...as we approached the village we expected to come up against some sort of opposition but no when we arrived their Home Guard group were just stood waiting for us...Sgt Price got us making hand grenades of mud and told us in no uncertain manner to give them a good doing over as they should have been ready for us. What a mess we left them in...`
