Shaftesbury Election of 1774. The Trial of the Cause on the Action brought by Hans Wintrop Mortimer, Esq; Member for the Borough of Shaftesbury, against Francis Sykes, Esq; for bribary committed at Shaftesbury, previous to the General Election, in October, 1774. Tried by a special jury, on Saturday the 27th of July 1776. At the assize held at Dorchester for the County of Dorset, before The Honourable Sir James Eyre, printed in the year 1776, 19 pages, with a later printed broadside pasted to verso of the title page from Hans Wintrop Mortimer, addressed to the worthy electors of the Borough of Shaftesbury, dated Shaston, 11 June, 1790, proposing himself once more for election (the fourth time), and referring to the 'wicked conduct of my agent', plus the rare uncoloured mezzotint The Shaftsbury Election or the Humours of Punch, published by S. Jackson, 15 July 1775 (BM Satires 5341), separately published but here bound in as frontispiece, creased where previously folded, torn without loss to central vertical fold, and a shorter tear without loss near inner margin (restrengthened with paper to verso), further manuscript ownership annotations to endpapers and blank leaves at front of volume, by J.W. Mortimer and Mark Mortimer, circa 1820s-1850s, contemporary or near-contemporary sprinkled full calf, worn with backstrip partially deficient, 4to (Qty: 1)NOTESA notorious case of election bribery. 'At the election of Sir Thomas Rumbold and Sir Francis Sykes, the two ministerial candidates for Shaftesbury in 1774, several thousand pounds were distributed to the voters at the rate of 20 guineas a man. The mayor and aldermen were entrusted with the distribution and they devised a scheme by which a man disguised as Punch delivered guineas in parcels to electors through a hole in the door. The electors were then taken to another room in the house where 'Punch's Secretary' required him to sign notes for the money received made payable to an imaginary character, 'Glen Bucket'. The defeated candidate, Hans Mortimer, petitioned against the return on the ground of gross and notorious bribery the members and their agents... The House of Commons resolved that Sykes, Rumbold and six members of the Corporation of Shafesbury should be prosecuted for subornation of purgery; a bill was brought in for disfranchising Shaftesbury. These proceedings were eventually shelved, but while they were pending Mortimer brought actions... against Sykes for twenty-six acts of bribary, obtaining a verdict for twenty-two penalties amounting to £11,000.' (BM Satires 5341, pages 225-226). One of the best-known examples of rigged elections in 'rotten boroughs', partly because the candidates were nabobs, Sir Thomas Rumbold having been Governor of Madras, and consequently a man of enormous wealth.

Highly Important I.R.A. Army Council Archive 1924-5, 1929-31 This is a central file of documents sent to and issued by the IRA's Chief of Staff, who for much of the period covered was Moss (Maurice) Twomey. The documents were filed (or 'dumped') in groups and there is some overlapping of dates. For the periods covered, this file gives a meticulously detailed account of all the IRA's activities and internal procedures. Outgoing letters and instructions from the Chief of Staff are generally in carbon copy; incoming letters are some times in manuscript and sometimes in typescript. Most letters are signed with initials, if at all, or by military position, but most of the writers can be identified by anyone familiar with the IRA's personnel. Many are on headed IRA paper. almost all letters are carefully dated whether by the writer or the recipient. There are over 300 documents, extending to over 500 pages. There is a gap between October 1925 and April 1929. The range of documents is very broad, and the following is intended as no more than an outline guide. (24.3.1924), 3rd Western Div. to C/s, interesting letter about funds needed to pay legal bills for Jock Leonard, in prison for shooting of D.I. Swanzy in 1920; (3 May 1924) Chief of Staff to O/C. Limerick County, setting up a new Limerick command, with code work; (21 May 1924) O/C. No. 2 Tirconaill Brigade, resigning due to financial circumstances (had been offered a temporary job in Belfast); (25 Sept. 1924) M. Twomey (Inspection Officer) to C/o making recommendations for battalion mobilizations; (Oct. 15 1924) C/S to Comdt. Sean Mc B(ride), ' I do not think there will be any pogroms in the North; etc; (24.4.25) Sighle nic Amhlaoibh, Cumann na mBan, to O/C, about volunteers giving evidence in court; (24 April 1929) C/S to 'H.S.' concerning a financial dispute with one Fitzgerald. ' We are determined that this debt will be discharged by Fitzgerald and are prepared to take very drastic action, if necessary, to compel him to do so.' ; (2 Aug. 1929). C/S to late Adt. No. 2 Area, Ulster, accepting his resignation (after 'justified strictures' on his performance); (April 1929) Letter signed 'P', probably Peadar O'Donnell, mentioning India and Nehru, discussing his own need for independence. 'I had to jump clear of things to follow my own vision, believing that a narrowing deadening insurrectionism is paralysing our revolutionary possibilities.' With a page of 'Notes for fraternal delegates to Birmingham Conference.'; (12.8.1929) Adjt. Gen. to 'L.P.', seeking details of U.S. 'Timthire' (representative) of men who got into USA 'illegally' 1918 - 1921, etc; (5 Sept. 1929) 'J.B.' (Sean Brady) to Mr. Ambrose, seeking to dissuade him from resigning his position; (9.9.29) R.King to C/S, 'I regret that owing to feeling completely tired out and in need of rest and change, I am obliged to resign my position of D. Comms. (Director of Communications), with reply urging him to take leave of absence instead; (13.9.29), C/S to O/C South Dublin Battn. re carrying of arms by volunteers; (22.11.1929) O/C Cork No. 1 Brigade to C/s about a man named Barrett whom they are trying to 'run to earth,'; also an arms capture, 'not as a result of inside intelligence,' etc; Sept - Dec. 1929, extended correspondence between C/S and others over poor inspection reports from Ulster No. 1 area, missing dispatches, resignation of O/C, etc; (16.12.29) 'M.F.,' I/O No. 2 Area, Britain, angry letter complaining about interference by a man (previously suspended) who has returned claiming to having instructions 'to collect the remnants of the Army together,' etc; (18.12.1929), reply from C/S saying the man has no authority from him to act in the matter described, but criticising, 'the laxity in the organisation over there for some time,'; (6 Jan. 1930) Copy of communication addressed to the British Government, about prisoners in English Gaols, - identifying four men in jail for a bank raid and saying 'the act ... was duly authorised by th Competent Authority here,' etc., with manuscript list of members of the British Cabinet (to whom presumably it was distributed); (Jan. 25, 1930), 'An Timthire,' (New York), news of Luke Dillon's death, asks for receipt for $1500 cabled recently; (27 Jan 1930) Army Council to Chairman Clan na Gael Executive (USA), detailed 3 page letter seeking to dispel various misunderstanding stating, 'The Army Council recognises itself as the Supreme National Authority in Ireland'; has power to proclaim itself at anytime a Provisional Government, with powers of war and peace, etc., discussing its relations with the Second Dail etc., also complaining about cutting off of financial support. 'The situation now and for some months has been very serious.'; and inviting the Clan to send a Representative to Ireland for discussions; with a detailed reply (Jan. 30, 1930) from 'C' mentioning an Envoy sent by 'Sceilg', who has caused difficulties, etc; (Feb. 1930) More letters about disorganization in Britain; (12.2.30) 'I am amazed at your report that organisation was let lapse; (17.2.30) C/S to O/C Dublin Brigade, complaining he did not turn up at the meeting place yesterday. (25.2.30) Long and interesting letter from 'your old friend' (Probably Moss Twomey) to 'Tom' (evidently a trusted Republican then based in the USA), explaining the situation at home - 'Things are quiet normal here, raids, arrests, and journeys to the Bridewell everyday, for most of the lads,' etc.; emphasising the need for foreign publicity for the I.R.A.; disassociating the Army from 'the Councils of the Irish Republic,' being started under the auspices of C(omhairle) na Poblachta; and complaining bitterly that 'for some unexplained reasons the Clan practically cut off financial supplies since August last .. If they had told us that the money was not available we would be satisfied, but the position is that on the strength of it coming we incurred debts, and borrowed extensively. Now we are in a mess ... You can scarcely appreciate the mental torture and uncertainty we have gone through for months past. It has nearly finished me. Indeed I want to close it all, and would have got out, but it would only be leaving others in a hole,' etc. (April 1930) Points for Speaker, Easter Sunday in New York, 3pp., with a further page of notes of matters to be raised; (26.4.30) notes on American engagements signed 'R', probably in Frank Ryan's hand; (4.6.30) unsigned 3pp personal letter to 'An Timthire' (USA) probably from Moss Twomey, discussing the political situation and relations with De Valera making it clear that Clan people who hope for an arrangement with Dev. are wrong as he is moving towards Free-Staterism, etc; also same date, official Army Council despatch to 'An Timthire,'; (31.3.31) very detailed 3pp typescript to Chairman, Army Council, from new York, evidently from 'Timthire' discussing various issues raised in previous message (lacking last page). There are also many detailed notes from units around the country concerning appointments, local difficulties, operations, financial matters etc etc. A multiplicity of important letters, notes and documents, as an Archive, w.a.f. * These files provide historians with the opportunity for the first time to construct a fuller authoritative account of the I.R.A. in the years following the Civil War and before Fianna Fail's accession to power. Died 9/1/21964.Murray was awarded his Distinguished Service Medal for the operations on the Tigris River 3/6/15. “John. B. Murray O.N.J.8870, signaller on the Comet has also shown himself and exceptionally reliable man both at Amara and on another occasion viz. Murray behaved with great Gallantry signalling from an exposed position in H.M.S Comet when under shell fire at Ahwaz”.The miniature Russian Order of St George is an intriguing mystery of a possible award, which is worthy of further research. On Tuesday 28th September H.M.S. Comet, an armed paddle launch tug and two iron barges at the centre appeared to prevent the final capture of Kut. Comet (Lt-Cdr Cookson, on the books of sloop Clio), Shaitan and Sumana steamed up under heavy rifle and machine gun fire, Comet went ahead to ram the dhow, failed to break through, gunfire also failed, Lt-Cdr Cookson jumped onto the dhow with an axe to try to cut the wire hawsers securing her, was riddled with bullets from close-range and killed, no other lives lost. The gunboats sank the dhow with gunfire and all retired. Early next day, the Turks had gone, the boom was dismantled and Kut occupied. Lt-Cdr Edgar Christopher Cookson DSO was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross.Murray was one of these men of Dunster force (see below) and his diary covers this period. A signal from Lt Commander R.Harrison to R.N.O Baku. ‘Leading Signalman John Murray D.S.M J8870. The above-named rating has served under my command on board H.M.S. Mantis in Mesopotamia during the expedition across Persia, at the defence and evacuation of Baku and on-board H.M.S. Venture in Caspian Sea between 24th April 1918 and 18th May 1919. From my close personal observation of Leading Signalman Murray both in action and under very trying conditions of service I am of the opinion that he has all the qualities likely to fit him for the rank of commissioned officer and strongly recommend his advancement’.Dunster force was a naval element under Commodore Norris accompanied the force. The task they were given was vague. They were to obtain control of the Caspian Sea and merchant shipping therein in order to support the force in Baku and to prevent the Turks from crossing to Krasnovodsk and advancing from there. To gain military control of the Caspian Sea, a Royal Navy party of 5 officers, 86 ratings and 12 guns suitable for mounting on the Caspian steamers was despatched to Enzeli from Baghdad under the command of Commodore D.T. Norris.A rare group to a “sailor in the desert”. During WW1 he fought the Turks in Mesopotamia and the Bolsheviks in the Caspian Sea. His history is well documented and his diary for the time in Dunster force only enhances the desirability of the group.James Boyd Murray (younger brother of John Murray) born 28/8/1896 Barony, Glasgow. Landed France 5/11/1914 with the 5th Bn Cameronians. Regimental # 6537, it is highly probable that he was a pre-war Territorial. Killed in action 20/7/1917 at High Woods on the Somme. In this action the battalion lost 6 Officers K.I.A., 12 W.I.A. 19 Other ranks K.I.A., 153 W.I.A. and 217 M.I.A. James Murray has no known grave and is remembered at the Thiepval Memorial.

Parachute Training with the US Green Berets. He would see action, firstly in the Aden Crisis On a 16 man night patrol, (his enemy were the Arab Tribesman of the National Liberation Front), they came across a goatherd, after being called up to translate, this happened! (extract from No Mean Soldier by P McAleese..)'We assumed everything was going according to plan, and moved on carefully, the moon was not yet up and it was so dark in the narrow wadi I could only just see the rock walls rearing up beside us, five minutes later Dave Haley(Sgt) whispered 'Pete come up' there's some more chappies down here! I padded up to Dave, to speak to them and made out the dark shapes of a group of shepherds lying on the ground ahead, just as i started to speak, I saw one of them shift on his side, it was probably the way he moved which warned me and I thought this is never right, the Arab shot Dave Haley full in the chest, he should have shot me as I was the closest, but I was standing to one side......Dave collapsed badly wounded and I shot the Arab six times, then all hell broke loose. 'McAleese would later serve again in Aden and would become one of the first Parachute Reg't/SAS members to free-fall parachute into a 'hot zone' with Operation Snowgoose 'Radfan Emergency', McAleese served in Bahrain and Cyprus and served in Borneo with the SAS 16th Air troop (D Sqdn) being involved in the gruesome 'Jungle Warfare' of that conflict. It would be fair to say that when McAleese left the British Army in 1969 he had already seen plenty of action with the Regiment. He worked in the lucrative Industry of the North Sea Oil Rigs, but once a soldier, always a soldier and in 1975, this was all to change with a new career as a 'mercenary' fighting in the Angolan Civil War, fighting on behalf of the National Liberation Front of Angola, even assuming Command of the Formation after the Capture of 'Costas Georgiou'. In early 1977 he went to Rhodesia, where he enlisted with the Rhodesian Special Air Service Regiment, being assigned to A Sqdn, with the rank of a Non-Commissioned Officer, later in 1979 he joined the British South Africa S Police 'Special Branch' operating in South Rhodesia and after the fall of Rhodesia in 1980 he enlisted with the South Africa Defence Forces 44, Parachute Brigade, in which he served as Colour Sgt. In the early 80's he was instrumental in the creation of a new Pathfinder Reconnaissance unit, and served in the South Africa Border War, in the mid 1980's McAleese set up home in Pretoria and became employed with the COIN Security group, a Military/Police private contractor based in South Africa. He would go on to be severely injured in a near-fatal Parachute Display jump and would return to the UK. At the end of the 1980's he spent two years working for Government forces in the Columbian Drug Wars conflict, being involved in a covert Operation to locate and 'deal with' Pablo Escobar, he also went onto work in Moscow, Russia, as a Bodyguard Training Instructor and also undertook Security work in Algeria and later Iraq for several years, the recipient also ran a Public House in Birmingham, 'The Gunmakers Arms'. Peter McAleese was once quoted....'I'm just an ordinary person, who happened to find himself doing extraordinary things' and there is no doubt that this group represents a unique insight to the 'tough' world of being a professional soldier and its combination of awards is almost unique, the recipient not only served his country with 'distinction but led a very colouful military career throughout...the lot also consists of the following...
