AN EARLY 18TH CENTURY COCONUT CUP MOUNTED IN 17TH CENTURY 'PIRATE' SILVERthe coconut finely carved with three panels depicting a fouled anchor, a Man o'War, the coat of arms of Admiral Sir Chaloner Ogle and mounted within straps of silver with cut-card foliate edging beneath a similarly decorated rim, plain baluster stem and circular foot -- 6in. (15cm.) high.Sir Chaloner Ogle (1680/1-1750) had a long and distinguished career in the Royal Navy, seeing service in the War of the Spanish Succession and rising to be Admiral of the Fleet. However, his most celebrated exploit was hunting down and killing the notorious pirate Bartholomew Roberts (1682-1722) in a sharp action off the coast of Gabon, West Africa. In a spectacular career raiding shipping off the Americas and West Africa, ‛Black Bart’ had taken some 400 prizes, developed his own pirate code and adopted the iconic skull and crossbones flag. In 1721, having wrought havoc in the Caribbean and bringing shipping there to a near standstill, Roberts in Royal Fortune with some 250 pirates, made for West Africa. After taking French prizes off the Guinea coast, Roberts headed for Sierra Leone and then, in January 1722, into the slave-trading port of Ouidah (now Republic of Benin) where, a Royal African Company sloop, Whydah, having refused to surrender like the other shipping at anchor there, Roberts’s pirates set it alight, killing its chained cargo of eighty slaves. Those that escaped the inferno were devoured by the encircling sharks. Roberts then led his men away to rest, carouse and count their earnings.Having heard reports of pirate degradations on the African coast and witnessing the aftermath of the tragedy at Ouidah, Chaloner Ogle, in command of Swallow, forty guns, had gone looking for Roberts and his pirate crew. On 5 February he found them at anchor under Cape Lopez, with most of the pirates drunk. Believing Swallow to be a merchantman, one of the pirate ships had given chase and out of sight of the others, was promptly taken. Ogle then returned to Cape Lopez under French colours where he was attacked by Royal Fortune with Roberts on deck: ‛dressed in a rich crimson damask waistcoat and breeches, a red feather in his hat, a gold chain round his neck, with a diamond cross hanging to it, a sword in his hand, and two pairs of pistols slung over his shoulders ‛.Hauling down his false colours and raising his ensign, Ogle engaged the enemy and brought a broadside to bear which raked Royal Fortune, mortally wounding Roberts whose throat was torn away by grape shot. To deny Ogle his trophy, the pirate crew straightaway wrapped Roberts body, still armed and dressed in all his finery, into a sail and committed it to the sea. They then fought on until Royal Fortune’s mainmast fell and they asked for quarter. Of the 272 pirates captured by Ogle: 52 were hanged (18 of the bodies being tarred and put in gibbets), 65 were sold back into slavery, 20 were taken into the service of the Royal African Company and the remainder sent back to prison in London. The death of ‛Black Bart’ was a sensation. Known as The Great Pyrate in the "Golden Age" of Piracy, he captured the public imagination and ‛Black Bart’ was the most important figure in Captain Johnson’s General History of the Pirates (1724), more so even than Blackbeard or Captain Kidd. In the years since, Roberts’ celebrity has only grown, with frequent mentions of his career in popular culture: from Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island to the film franchise Pirates of the Caribbean.Chaloner Ogle, Black Bart’s nemesis, garnered no such posthumous fame but he did reap all the financial benefits of his exploit during his lifetime. On his return to England, he was knighted and awarded, by special permission of the King, all of the pirates’ captured ships and their treasure, estimated at £10,000. The windfall oiled Ogle’s path to the heights of the Royal Navy.Of unknown origin, and possibly decorated by a member of Ogle’s crew, this coconut cup may represent one small surviving fragment of the countless jewels, chains and baubles discovered by Ogle in Black Bart’s treasure chests.

1920 Triumph 550cc Model HRegistration no. EC 3145Frame no. 311616Engine no. 72047 CRX•Very well known in Vintage circles•Restored by second owner Arthur Cunliffe•Only four owners from new•Many-time Banbury Run participantThe first Triumph motorcycle of 1902 used a Belgian Minerva engine but within a few years the Coventry firm - originally a bicycle manufacturer founded by German immigrants Siegfried Bettman and Maurice Schulte - was building its own power units. The company was soon involved in racing and the publicity generated by competition success - Jack Marshall won the 1908 Isle of Man TT's single-cylinder class for Triumph having finished second the previous year - greatly stimulated sales. By the outbreak of The Great War the marque's reputation for quality and reliability was well established, leading to substantial orders for 'Trusty Triumphs' for military use.Triumph's 3½hp model had first appeared in 1907. Originally of 453cc, its sidevalve engine was enlarged to 476cc in 1908 and finally to 499cc in 1910 before being superseded by the 550cc 4hp model in 1914. Equipped with three-speed Sturmey-Archer gearbox, it was this revised 4hp - the Model H - that did such sterling service in WWI, some 30,000 'Trusty Triumphs' seeing action with British and Allied forces. The example offered here is a 1920 model first registered in 1921 after the introduction of the 1920 Roads Act. An older restoration well known in Vintage circles, 'EC 3145' was restored by the second owner, Arthur Cunliffe, and has been well maintained ever since. The machine is offered with a comprehensive history file, the highlight of which is an article published in Motor Cycle News in 1963 recounting how 'EC 3145' had been purchased by first owner 'Hubert William J' (Hubert William Jackson) to further his courting of the local doctor's daughter. The couple ended up eloping to Gretna Green on the 'Trusty Triumph'! The article's author, Arthur Cunliffe, bought 'EC 3145' from Mr Jackson and spent many hours restoring it. Arthur campaigned the Triumph extensively before selling it to Phil Bowker, from whom it was purchased by our vendor in December 1997. Since then 'EC 3145' has been ridden on numerous Banbury Runs, perhaps a dozen times, as well as other events including the Graham Walker Run. However, it has not been ridden for at least 4-5 years and will require recommissioning before returning to the road. Prior to being laid up, the Triumph was regularly maintained by the enthusiast owner and is only being sold due to his advancing years. Close inspection is highly recommended. A spare Sturmey-Archer gearbox case and a period leather box containing a spare drive belt are included in the sale. The David Dixon Photographic ArchiveDavid Dixon 1933-2013From 1958 to 1971, David Dixon was a staff writer and photographer working on The Motor Cycle magazine under its long-term editor, Harry Louis. Dixon was reckoned to be the first European journalist ever to ride a Honda, and he tested many more exotic models, including top 'works' machinery, as well as being a successful motorcycle racer in his own right. The Dixon family has a wonderful photograph of David, aged 5, perched on his uncle's works Royal Enfield '500', grinning at the camera outside the King's House in Chapelizod, Dublin in 1938. It is tempting to think that that was the moment he fell in love with motorcycles. The eldest of four brothers, David once dug a ditch at the back of his father's orchard to practice his trials riding, much to his dad's annoyance. He went on to develop a love of circuit racing and looked up to Ireland's stars of the day: riders like Ernie Lyons and Joe Dunphy. The lure of a 'proper' job in England saw David arrive off the boat from Ireland in the 1950s. Like any new arrival, he had a burning passion to be successful. He held down a dull insurance job for a couple of years, dreaming of a career in journalism. Then, in 1958, he had a stroke of luck; he received a letter from Harry Louis, editor of The Motor Cycle magazine, offering him a job. Joining TMC, he quickly earned a reputation as a perceptive, analytical writer who involved readers in the experience of road testing. He was also a great photographer, equipped with a Zeiss camera, and loved reviewing all the new bikes and travelling to race meetings in the UK, Isle of Man, and Grands Prix in Europe. He would do his home work, like Murray Walker, and knew all the best positions trackside to take dramatic action shots. And his Irish silver tongue got him into the paddocks to capture images of top stars like Giacomo Agostini and Mike Hailwood. David once told a story about how, when on assignment for The Motor Cycle, he photographed the first race, jumped on his bike to compete in the next race, and then, still in his leathers, photographed the final event. Then, in the early 1970s, he teamed up with the legendary Tommy Robb to form the Dixon-Robb Race School. Together, they ran a busy race school, teaching the next generation the best racing lines and track craft and, above all, safety. Bikes were getting faster and technology developing, so safety was a big thing at the race school. David continued to work as a freelance journalist/photographer in between his race school duties. He was well known in Sweden for his freelance reviews in MC Nytt, and he also wrote for the Italian magazine, Moto Ciclismo.By this time David had two small children, and the race school income was insufficient to pay all the bills. So with the opportunity to tap into the Japanese invasion of Honda, Suzuki, Kawasaki and Yamaha products, he decided to open his first shop in Farncombe, Surrey: Dixon Racing Ltd was born. The opening ceremony saw a large crowd in attendance to see 'Dr Who', Jon Pertwee, who was guest of honour.David recognised the superior reliability and performance of Japanese motorcycles. This was a major selling point and David became a UK main dealer. As the business boomed it outgrew the Farncombe shop, so he moved to larger premises in nearby Godalming. David became the sole UK distributor for Pops Yoshimura's hugely popular product range.David Dixon's extensive archive of historic photographic material is presented in six large ring-binders of negatives and transparencies totalling over 5,000 images. These are mostly 35mm format and black-and-white, with some 6x6cm material and some in colour. They start with David's visits to various Continental Grands Prix in 1965 and to the Isle of Man TT in 1966, '67 and '68. Binder 2 is devoted entirely to 1969, when David's job took him to several GPs and the Isle of Man TT, and also involved road-testing the new Kawasaki Mach III and Honda CB750, the latter pitted against a Münch Mammut at the Nürburgring. Covering 1970, Binder 3 contains images of more GPs and that year's TT; the International Thruxton 500-Mile endurance race; and a road test of a Suzuki-powered Difazio with hub-centre steering. But racing was still in his blood, so alongside these ventures in the 1970s, David ran a racing team at the Isle of Man TT, which was the family's our annual holiday! In his eventful life, David also visited the stunning GP track at Monza to set a speed record on one of Paul Dunstall's tuned machines. In the early 1980s he teamed up with Phil Read to set a UK speed record of 164mph on a modified roadster. There was also the excitement a new venture: importing Bimotas from Italy. In 1984, David entered his Manx Norton in the Brighton Speed Trials, which was yet another a wonderful day out for the family.Bonhams is honoured to offer The David Dixon Photographic Archive with his extensive archive of historic photographic material being presented in six large ring-binders of negatives and transparencies totalling over 5,000 images.
