A pulley wheel understood from the wreck of HMS Colossus, the Colossus sank off the Scilly Isles on 11th December 1798 during a violent storm. She was a 74 gun Man o' War and part of Nelson's battle fleet returning from the Mediterranean via Naples, having seen action at the Battle of the Nile and Battle of Cape St Vincent. She was carrying 200 wounded men, and a cargo including the second collection of the Duke of Hamilton's collection of ancient Greek vases. -

Einzigartiger Nachlass.Carl Peters wurde 1891 zum Reichskommissar für das Kilimandscharogebiet ernannt. Seine Amtsführung vor Ort war durch Grausamkeit gegenüber den Landesbewohnern und der willkürlichen Anwendung der Todesstrafe gekennzeichnet. So wurde Peters 1892 nach Deutschland zurückbeordert, wo man ihn von 1893 - 1895 im Kolonialministerium beschäftigte, während gegen ihn Ermittlungen liefen. Die Untersuchungen des Disziplinargerichts endeten 1897 mit der unehrenhaften Entlassung aus dem Reichsdienst. Peters wich durch erneuten Umzug nach London aus und lebte von 1896 bis 1914 in England, wo er sich mit Goldbergbau in Südafrika befasste. 1909 heiratete er und zu Beginn des Ersten Weltkrieges kehrte er endgültig nach Deutschland zurück, wo er 1918 starb. Letter by Wolff to Peters (13 March 1916). Comes with seven sheets of correspondence between Peters’ wife Thea and Wolff (1918 – 1920). Furthermore, a telegram to Wolff dated 6 November 1937: (tr.) "Achieved official rehabilitation … Kind regards Mrs. Karl Peters". Slightly damaged in places, traces of age. Unique set of documents.Carl Peters was appointed Imperial High Commissioner for the Kilimanjaro region in 1891. His conduct in office was characterised by his brutal behaviour against the local population and the erratic application of the death penalty. In 1892, Peters was therefore recalled to Germany where he was employed in the Imperial Colonial Office between 1893 and 1895, while official accusations were brought against him. After the investigations by the disciplinary court he was dishonourably deprived of his commission in 1897. Peters evaded final sentencing by relocating to London and lived in England between 1896 and 1914, where he was engaged in gold mining in South Africa. He married in 1909 and at the beginning of World War I he returned to Germany, where he died in 1918.Condition: II
TAMEKAZU: AN AMUSING WOOD NETSUKE OF TWO FISHERMEN FIGHTING AN OCTOPUSBy Tamekazu, signed Tamekazu 為一Japan, 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)An intricately carved wood netsuke depicting a large octopus attacking two fishermen who incurred the wrath of the eight-armed cephalopod by trying to remove it from a large basket. One man is completely insnared by the tentacles of the creature, his robe opening up as he falls, exposing his buttocks as he topples over. The second man twisting in action, his robes flowing with the motion, pulling to no avail on a tentacle, bracing one foot on the basket for support. Natural himotoshi through the tangled mass of legs and tentacles.
