First World War Distinguished Service Medal grouping, George V Distinguished Service Medal ( A6973 J. FEATHERBE. SEA. R.N.R. H.M.S.JULNER 24 APRIL 1916 (Ships name misspelt) ) 1914-15 Star , 1914-1918 British War Medal, Victory Medal ( 6973A J. FEATHERBE. SMN. R.N.R. ) John Featherbe was born in 1896 and joined the Royal Naval Reserve at Folkestone, he was called up in 1914 and by August 1915 was serving in Mesopotamia in H.M.S. Alert, in April 1916 Featherbe volunteered with others to man H.M.S. Julnar a Mesopotamian river steamer which was commissioned into the Royal Navy on 17th April 1916 under the command of Lieutenant Humphrey Firman R.N assisted by Lieutenant Commander Charles Cowley R.N.V.R., and loaded with stores to undertake an extremely risky re supply operation to the besieged British 6th Indian ( Poona ) Division at Kut Al Amarah, on the night of 24th April 1916 H.M.S. Julnar set out on her mission, she very quickly came under rifle fire and ten miles from Kut she came under artillery fire, two miles further on she was hit by a shell killing Firmin and wounding Cowley, shortly after this she struck a cable streched across the river and drifted to the riverbank forcing Cowley to surrender, the Ottomans later claimed that Cowley was shot while trying to escape but it is likely he was executed as they regarded him as an Otterman subject because of his birthplace, both Firman and Cowley were awarded the Victoria Cross posthumously for their gallant attempt to reach Kut, Seaman John Featherbe was awarded the D.S.M. for ' miscellaneous services' during the action that night, also included in the lot is a grouping of Second World War medals, mounted separately,1939-1945 Star, Atlantic Star, Defence Medal and 1939-1945 British War Medal, that are also believed to have belonged to John Featherbe, there is also printed research on the attempt by H.M.S. Julnar to reach Kut and the award of the V.C. to Firman and Cowley, ( Qty )

Wollen, R.I.Exhibited in the Royal Academy, 1902', entitled 'The Victoria Cross' ( Colesburg, South Africa, 1900 ) the print is a depiction of the action in which Sir John Peniston Milbanke won the Victoria Cross on 5th January 1900,'during a reconnaissance near Colesberg, Sir John Milbanke, when retiring under fire with a small patrol of the 10th Hussars, notwithstanding the fact that he had just been severely wounded in the thigh, rode back to the assistance of one of the men whose pony was exhausted, and who was under fire from some Boers, Milbanke took the man up on his own horse under a most galling fire and brought him safely back to camp'
Portrait of the French abbot Jean de Brétigny (1556-1634) bears a coat of arms upper left with Latin text attached to the reverse oil on canvas, unframed 60.5 x 53 cmFootnote: The lengthy Latin inscription on the reverse of the canvas would seem to say: "The Venerable Priest Jean de Quintanadoine, temporal lord of Brétigny, St-Denis de Boisgirard, and St-Léonard . Born of a noble line in Rouen in France, he was a man simple and humble of heart, without guile, truly a father of the poor, assiduous in speaking, reflection, reading and action. He was a man of perfect chastity, whole in his faith, distinguished in his love for God and for his neighbour. He was outstanding for his efforts in the promotion of Christian piety by the translation of the books of St Teresa from Spanish into French. He undertook the introduction into France of her own barefoot Carmelite order, and there he built, largely at his own expense, several monasteries. Indefatigable both in deeds and commitment, he endowed them, enlarged them, and showed them his devotion by building or by his counsel governing and administering them. He was first prominent in the Netherlands as Superior of the same. At length, consumed by age, his many travels, and cares for the said Order, and by the endless labours he had undertaken, full of good days, at Rouen he gave up his soul to God on the 8 th of June/July in the year 1634 in the 79 th year of his age." We are grateful to Alan Chamberlain for translating the above.Condition report: Oil on canvas which is unlined. The canvas has general undulations and few concave deformations. ALEXANDER SAMOKHVALOV (RUSSIAN 1894-1971)On the Bus, 1970 oil on canvas 90 x 102 cm (35 1/2 x 40 1/8 in.) signed, dated and titled on verso EXPERTISEAccompanied by a certificate of expertise from E. Petrova, State Russian Museum, St. Petersburg, 2007LITERATUREL. Zinger, Alexander Samokhvalov (Moscow: Sovetsky khudozhnik, 1982) (illustrated)LOT NOTES Alexander Samokhvalov, one of the foremost representatives of the Leningrad school of painting, began his artistic career in 1914 at the Higher Art School at the Imperial Academy of Arts, where he studied under Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin. Unlike many of his peers at the academy and the Mir iskusstva circle, such as Eugene Lanceray, Anna Ostroumova-Lebedeva, or Alexander Osmerkin, in the late 1920s Samokhvalov enthusiastically embraced the development of Socialist Realism for which he is remembered. As in his most recognizable work - Girl in a Football Shirt, awarded the gold medal at the International Art Fair in Paris (which also exhibited Pablo Picasso's Guernica) - his paintings from the 1930s often showcase the first generation of Soviet women as the face of modernity and strength. At first glance, the present painting, made in the year before Samokhvalov's death, appears divergent from the youthful athletic heroism associated with his oeuvre. Here, instead, the painter balances an illustration of working-class Soviet society with an introspective group portrait. The tightly cropped scene, while taking place among supposed strangers, is both a highly intimate and dynamic one. The expressions of the passengers - like the faraway gaze of the blonde man facing the viewer, or of the woman occupying the center left of the painting, or the man beside her glancing upward (as if about to start a conversation) - are oblique yet lively. Each is perpetually at the brink of action: take the woman in the lower right, hands placed on the handle of the seat in front, perhaps ready to disembark, or the one in a striped headscarf, lips questioningly parted. The legible dramatic narrative and typology of early Soviet painting is adapted here to a microcosmic snapshot of daily life, punctuated by an etherial ambiance awarded by the rain-blurred windows. Awash in hazy mauves and umbers, the bus interior, at Samokhvalov's hands, transforms into a meditative landscape. Indeed, public transit, that cornerstone of modern life, has long served as an artist's ideal venue for the convergence of public and private, interior and exterior. From the Socialist Realist subway scenes of the 1930s to the photorealistic paintings of Semen Faibisovich, the Russian painting tradition has never been able to abandon the hidden poetic potential of the day-to-day traveler.CONDITIONObserved in frame, the work is in overall good condition. Inspection under UV light shows scattered areas of retouching, the largest one being a vertical repair, possibly to a tear, along the upper left corner, approximately 30 cm (12 in.) long, and to the center of the beige coat. No more than 5% of the canvas is inpainted.N.B. All lots are sold in as-is condition at the time of sale.
