The Wood brothers - two early 20th century Lafayette hand-coloured photograph portraits in leather-backed frames: Major Algernon ‘Algy’ George Newcombe Wood D.S.O. (1879-1915), Essex Regiment; and Lieutenant Richard Morton Wood (1876-1908), 6th Inniskilling Dragoons. Also to include a transcript of an 1896 letter sent by Lt. Richard Wood to his father, Colonel Wood, which gives an interesting account of the period between stiff fighting at Taba's Induna and User’s Farm in 1896. (The frames 40 x 28.5 cm, the portraits 22 x 14.5 cm).Provenance: by descent through the family.Major Wood’s photograph is portrayed in Creagh’s The Distinguished Service Order (Vol. 1, p. 419) and the circumstances of his death at Suvla Bay recounted by his fellow officer Capt. John Gillam, 'I inquire how it happened, and am told that he was leaning up against the back of the trench immediately outside his dugout, his pipe in his mouth, looking at an aeroplane which was moving over our line. Suddenly a bullet strikes him in the throat; he takes his pipe out of his mouth, makes a gesture of extreme annoyance with his arm, and mutters the words “Damn it!” Then he sinks back in the arms of his sergeant-major, who is standing near him, and saying, “I am finished, sergeant-major,” quietly goes West.'Lt. Wood was a great friend of his brother officer, Capt. Oates of Antarctic fame, whose horse, ‘Angel Gabriel’, he rode to victory in the 1905 Grand Military Cup at Punchestown: ‘Gabriel was always in the leading division and fenced flippantly’ and went on to win by four lengths. Oates recalled ‘my eyes got so full of tears I could not see the horses and had to keep asking the man next to me how my horse was going’. Wood’s demise in 1908 was widely reported. The Sportsman reported, ‘At the early age of 32 a fine soldier and sportsman passed away on Monday … Lt. Wood arrived home on the 17th ult. but with indominable pluck hunted the next day, shot the next, and again hunted on the Saturday. On the latter day he had a fall and went to bed with a high temperature, which turned to influenza and pneumonia. For so young a man he had seen much active service, having been in the Matabele and Boer Wars for which he held three medals and eight clasps’. (The photograph shows him in patrol jacket with the British South Africa Company Medal and the King’s and Queen’s South Africa Medals.) The Daily Telegraph and Courier: ‘… served in Plumer’s Matabele Relief Force in 1896, gaining the medal, and with Roberts's Horse in the South African War. Lord Roberts gave him a commission in the Inniskillings in October, 1900, in recognition of his conspicuous bravery and tact. He took part in the relief of Kimberley, and participated in the operations in the Orange Free State from February to May, 1900, including the action at Paardeberg, Poplar Grove, Driefontein, Karee Siding, Vet River, and Zand River. In subsequent months be served in the Transvaal and in Orange River Colony, taking part in several engagements, including those near Johannesburg, and at Pretoria, Diamond Hill, and Wittebengen. He continued in South Africa until May, 1902, and received the Queen's medal with six clasps and the King's medal with two clasps. Lieutenant Wood was in charge of the Inniskillings’s Dublin riding school and was to have rejoined his regiment in Egypt with the rank of captain.’ The Chelmsford Chronicle (Aug. 21, 1896) – ‘THE MATABELE RELIEF FORCE - EXPERIENCES OF AN ESSEX MAN. Colonel Wood, J.P., Nithsdale, Ingatestone, has received a highly interesting letter from his eldest son, Mr. Richard Morton Wood, who is a trooper in the Matabele Relief Force. The letter is dated "User's Farm, near Buluwayo, July 15th, 1896" and the following are extracts from it: “I hope you received my two letters from Kharmi camp. Since then I have been for a long patrol. We had a very rough patrol, and a bit of stiff fighting at Taba's Induna. Our loss was four white men and seven Cape boys, and about twenty wounded. We had two seven-pounders, and about 700 men. The guns did grand work, and the natives did not relish the shells. Admiral Cringle's son was dead; also a very nice chap called Langton. He was hit in the leg, and we were carrying him in, when another shot came down the line and hit another man and glanced off his leg bone, and hit poor Langton in the stomach, which finished him. We were over three days on a cup of flour and half a tin of beef, and only had a coat to sleep on - no joke, I can tell you, as it freezes out here nearly every night now. I have been into Buluwayo and don’t think much of the place. The people have gone out of the town, and there is nothing going on. The Matabeles have some good shots among them, and it is no joke storming a hill with a good shot on the top. We gave them a fair dressing at Taba's Induna, and hope we killed some of those Matabele police, who are the chaps that do the damage. We are now camped at User's Farm, and expect to have a big hit at the natives in a week. We are always running out of food on the Iong patrols, and the last two or three days we have been on short rations. I lost two horses within the last days - both worked to death. On the days of the night we were in the saddle over 20 hours on the same horse, and the poor beggars had nothing to eat, which shows what they have to endure.”

Joseph Wopfner 1843 Schwaz/Tirol - 1927 München Prozession am Walchensee. Um 1895-1900. Öl auf Holz. Holz 360. Links unten signiert. 15,7 x 28,3 cm (6,1 x 11,1 in). PROVENIENZ: Galerie Heinemann, München (verso mit dem Etikett, Nr. 11577). Kommerzienrat Isidor Bach (1849-1946), München (1916 vom Vorgenannten erworben). Oil on panel. Holz 360. Lower left signed. 15.7 x 28.3 cm (6.1 x 11.1 in). PROVENANCE: Galerie Heinemann, Munich (with the label on the reverse, no. 11577). Councillor of commerce Isidor Bach (1849-1946), Munich (acquired from the above in 1916). Austrian private collection The work is free from restitution claims. The offer is made with the kind consent of Isidor Bach's heirs. EXHIBITION: Permanente Ausstellung von Werken erstklassiger deutscher, französischer, altenglischer und altspanischer Meister, Galerie Heinemann, Munich, 1914 (with illu. on p. 189). The small format by Joseph Wopfner shows a scene that is extraordinarily rich in figures and action. The artist, who was mainly active on the Chiemsee and is known for his lake pictures that are just sparsely populated with fishermen, devoted himself to the depiction of Bavarian-Catholic customs, which take place in front of the imposing backdrop of the mountains surrounding Walchensee. The destination of the procession on the occasion of the Catholic Feast of the Assumption on August 18 is the small baroque church of St. Margareth on the Zwergern peninsula. The priest says the prayer under the red canopy. In the foreground, Wopfner shows a devout group of women, to the right the blue and golden statue of the Mother of God. The solemnity of the moment is underlined by a ray of light breaking through the clouds. In summer bloom, the meadows shine in blue, yellow and red, a mother is playing with her child on the edge of the path in front of them. Despite the small format, the scene emanates sublimity in the sensitive account of the pious people embedded in the fertile summer landscape of the peaceful and protective mountains. ProvenanceFondazione Morra, NaplesCollection particulière, ItaliePuis par descendance au propriétaire actuelExpositionReggio Emilia, Musei Civici Reggio Emilia, For Inspiration Only, 2014Cette action painting a été réalisée à l'occasion de l'ouverture du musée Nitsch à Naples. This action painting was created on the occasion of the opening of the Nitsch Museum in Naples.C'est peu dire que le nom d'Hermann Nitsch laisse indifférent dans le monde de l'art contemporain. It is an understatement to say that the name of Hermann Nitsch does not spark much interest in the contemporary art world. His entire body of work explores extremely nonacademic themes: blood, mud, decay, which has kept many of his contemporaries at a distance. His performances and sacrificial rites, considered blasphemous and pornographic, even earned him several prison sentences.Hermann Nitsch was born in 1935 in Vienna, Austria. Of his early years his only memories were the deafening explosions of the Allied bombings that profoundly marked him. Years later, after studying graphic art, Nitsch first emerged with the manifesto he published in 1962, Die Blutorgel, which launched Viennese Actionism. The movement centered on performance art, included among others the likes of Günter Brus, Otto Muehl and Rudolf Schwarzkogler. That same year, he organized his first performance staging himself crucified, dressed in white, with his body covered in blood: a blasphemous and mortiferous experience that left the spectators dismayed and speechless. This is when was born what Nitsch would call the theater of orgies and mysteries, a total work of art which united all genres: painting, poetry, staging, musical composition, and over 150 'actions' during the course of his life, the repetition of which would constitute his Oeuvre. In 1998, at the castle of Prinzendorf bought years earlier by his former wife, he staged his greatest achievement, a six-day theatrical representation, inspired by ancient Dionysia festivals where were mixed [...] 'the extravagance of the score and its imaginative madness'.In this emblematic work painted in 2009 and offered for sale, Nitsch uses the technique he developed named 'Schüttbilder' or thrown paintings; he began by spreading out a canvas on which he projected black acrylic paint; bringing to mind the work of Georges Mathieu and Jackson Pollock, which he admitted readily, had greatly inspired him.At the center of the canvas, a white T-shirt hangs from a wooden lintel, its sleeves in the form of a cross. The spectator becomes a witness to the martyrdom of the crucifixion which is reenacted here before their eyes. The end result is an expressive, dynamic canvas that captures the energy and intensity of the artist's creative process.Hermann Nitsch is a controversial man who's provocative and transgressive work challenges established norms. Today, he is widely recognized, and two museums are entirely dedicated to his work: one in Mistelbach, Austria, and the other in Naples, Italy. Not to mention such major national museums as the MoMA, the George Pompidou Center and the Tate Modern, which have purchased his works for their permanent collections. His work can be seen as a social critique and an exploration of the human condition highlighting the dark and brutal aspects of existence. Despite the sometimes violent reactions to his work, Nitsch continues to inspire interest and commitment from art lovers around the world. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: AR WAR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium.W Lot is located in the Bonhams Warehouse and will only be available for collection from this location. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
