Provenienz:- Sammlung Kasper König, Berlin (direkt vom Künstler)Ausstellungen:- Museum Ludwig, Köln 2008/09- Lieu d'Art et Action Contemporaine, Dunkerque 2013Literatur:- H.C. Westermann Exhibition Catalogue and Catalogue Raisonné of the Objects, hrsg. von Michael Rooks und Lynne Warren, Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, Chicago 2001, WVZ-Nr. MCA 131, S. 280f. Abb.- Ausst.-Kat. Looking for Mushrooms: Beat Poets, Hippies, Funk, Minimal Art - San Francisco 1955-68, Museum Ludwig, Köln, Köln 2008, S. 134 Abb."Der Bildhauer und Grafiker H.C. India General Service Medal 1908-35, one clasp, North West Frontier 1908, awarded to Bombardier Harry Albert Grout, No. 3 Mountain Battery Royal Garrison Artillery, (2182 Bombr H.A. Grout No3 Mtn B. R.G.A.), named in running script, edge bumps and slight scuffs to naming, otherwise lightly toned very fine. (1)Records of No.3 Mountain Battery RGA – A Book of which this is the general description:-The 3rd Mountain Battery began life in 1759 as “Captain T. Smith’s Company, 3rd Battalion Royal Artillery”. The opening pages of the narrative describe the dress, equipment and establishment noting that “every man had his hair combed back, tied in a club three-quarters of a yard long with a broad black ribbon and well powdered with white.” After a few designation changes, described in the narrative, the unit’s title became No 3 Mountain Battery in 1889, the oldest mountain battery in the Royal Artillery by virtue of being the first to be equipped as one. This record goes from 1759 to 1908 and during that time the battery certainly saw plenty of action from the American War of Independence to Corunna to the Crimea and then, for thirty years (1878-1908) in India/Burma, in India mainly on the NW Frontier: Kabul, relief of Kandahar, Zhob Valley Field Force, Burma, Sikkim, Miranzai, Isazai, Chitral, Mohmand, Tirah. The last twenty pages contain the names of all the officers who served with the battery during the 150 years covered in the book, when they served and the expeditions or campaigns they were in with any medals.Sold with copy Medal Roll confirming clasp and copy Great War Pension Card
The Hutson Family George Thomas HutsonThe British War and Victory Medals and Memorial Plaque awarded to Pte George Thomas Hutson Royal Army Medical Corps who was Killed in Action in the sinking of His Majesty’s Hospital Ship Glenart Castle on the 26th of February 1918, comprising 1914-1920 British War and Victory Medals, (123711 Pte. G.T. Hutson. R.A.M.C.), Memorial Plaque (George Thomas Hutson) Framed and Glazed, naming not seen. Sold with an original photograph of George Hutson in uniform. On 25 February 1918, Glenart Castle left Newport, South Wales, heading towards Brest, France, to collect patients. After 3:00 on 26 February, fishermen in the Bristol Channel saw her clearly lit up as a hospital ship. John Hill — a fisherman on Swansea Castle — remembered "I saw the Hospital Ship with green lights all around her – around the saloon. She had her red side lights showing and mast-head light, and also another red light which I suppose was the Red Cross light." A little before 04:00, Glenart Castle was hit by a torpedo fired from the German U-boat UC-56 in the No. 3 hold. The blast destroyed most of the lifeboats, while the subsequent pitch of the vessel hindered attempts to launch the remaining boats. In the seven to eight minutes the ship took to sink, accounts varied as to how many lifeboats were launched, but only one lifeboat carrying 22 men survived the night on rough seas. The men bailed constantly in wintry conditions to avoid being swamped. They were rescued by a French boat, Feon, around 10:30. Four rafts bearing nine more men were located by USS Parker between 13:00 and 15:00. Fireman Jesse White washed astern in his exhausted state and was injured by Parker's propeller. White died on board. One man was unconscious when rescued and died in hospital the next day having never recovered consciousness. He was subsequently identified as Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) Private Samuel "Harry" Lund. The body of wireless operator Michael Sinnott was recovered off Trevose Head, Cornwall, on 2 March 1918.The most likely figures are that 182 were on board, of whom 29 survived. A total of 153 people were killed. Ninety-five of 120 crew died, including Captain Bernard Burt who had given the order "Every Man For Himself" before he was last seen retiring to the chart room. Both chaplains, 48 of 52 RAMC personnel, and all eight nurses of the Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service died. The matron of Glenart Castle, Kate Beaufoy, was among those killed in the sinking. Beaufoy was a veteran of the South African War and the Gallipoli campaign. Her family kept her diary and her writings describe life on the ship. Also killed was Staff Nurse Edith Blake, the only Australian nurse killed in action in the First World War. Having trained at the Coast Hospital (later Prince Henry Hospital) in Sydney, she volunteered to serve and was one of almost 130 Australian nurses allotted to the QAIMNS. She nursed at 1 Australian General Hospital in Cairo and 17 British General Hospital in Alexandria, on HMHS Essequibo and nursed Germans at Belmont Prisoners of War Hospital, Surrey before joining Glenart Castle. She described her war service in detailed letters home to her family. Newspaper reports suggested that the submarine may have shot at initial survivors of the sinking in an effort to cover up the sinking of Glenart Castle. The body of a junior officer of Glenart Castle was recovered from the water close to the position of the sinking. It was marked with two gunshot wounds, one in the neck and the other in the thigh. The body also had a life vest indicating he was shot while in the water. However, official records do not support this story.Arthur HutsonThe Great War Territorial Force War Medal Territorial Efficiency group of 4 awarded to Georges younger brother Arthur Hutson, 17th Battalion (1st Footballers) Middlesex Regiment later Royal garrison Artillery. A Q- Ship Casualty Group awarded to Stoker 1st Class David Arthur Collingham. H.M.S. Bergamot, Killed in Action when Bergamot was sunk by U-84 on the 13th of August 1917 comprising 1914-1920 British War and Victory Medals, (K.28401 D.A. Collingham. Sto. 1. R.N.), toned fine (2)HMS Bergamot was an Anchusa-class sloop of the Royal Navy, which had a short career during World War I. Built by Armstrong Whitworth, the ship was laid down on 1 January 1917, launched on 5 May, and commissioned on 14 July.Four weeks later, on 13 August 1917, under the command of Lieut-Commander Percy T. Perkins, she was sunk in the Atlantic 70 nautical miles north-west of the harbour of Killybegs by the German submarine U-84, commanded by Walter Rohr.U-84s War Diary describes how he sighted a lone merchant ship, with no defensive armament (an unusual sight by 1917). Bergamot evidently sighted the U-boat's periscope, as she began to zig-zag at high speed. U-84 fired one torpedo – which hit on the port side – and Bergamot broke in half and sank in four minutes. Surfacing, U-84 sighted an unusually large number of crew (70) and pieces of wood floating. The U-boat's log identifies the possibility of Bergamot being a "trap ship". One of the indicators being the narrow beam in relation to the length of the ship, a sure sign of a warship. The torpedo struck her on the port side at 13 minutes to 9, entering the auxiliary engine room and destroying the dynamo and the bulkhead separating the auxiliary engine room from the main engine room. All the lights went out. Bergamot launched a "panic party" in lifeboat no.1, containing 31 men, but the ship lurched to port, both the bow and stern rising out of the water, and she sank too quickly for the ruse to be successful.U-84 approached Lifeboat no. 2 and asked where the captain was. They were told, "In the other boat, Sir" although actually he was on a small raft being towed by no.2 at the time. U-84 had both her deck guns trained on the lifeboat, but they believed the story and headed for lifeboat no. 1, now about two miles away. There, they went close alongside and hauled the ship's steward aboard, probably because he was the only one with a collar and tie on, and looked like an officer. Luckily, he stuck to the cover story, although questioned severely by Rohr as to "where bound, what cargo?" and was told to go back to his lifeboat, after having been given a glass of port wine and a cigarette, and after also transferring a wounded man that the submarine had picked up to the boat. With a cheery, "See you after the war!" the submarine disappeared into the night mists. At the moment of the explosion, Bergamot's first officer, Lieutenant Frederick W. Siddall, and her probationer surgeon, Robert S. Smith were both in her wardroom. The explosion jammed both of the watertight doors leading into this compartment, and Siddall was rendered unconscious. Smith piled the wrecked wardroom furniture up in order to reach the skylight in the roof, and then dragged the unconscious Siddall up and out of the compartment. Having reached the main deck, Smith worked on both Siddall and a wounded petty officer, who was lying on the deck with a broken leg and arm. By this time the ship was clearly sinking so Smith inflated his casualties life vests and lowered them both into the water. As Bergamot sank one of her depth charges exploded, badly wounding Siddall and again rendering him unconscious. Smith towed both his casualties to lifeboat no.2, which had left the sinking ship, containing 47 survivors, and then worked on Siddall for 25 minutes, administering artificial respiration, until he again recovered consciousness. Smith then treated the other injured survivors in no.2 over the 48 hours that the lifeboats were adrift until they were picked up. For these lifesaving actions, Surgeon Robert Sydney Steele Cathcart Smith was awarded the Albert Medal. The lifeboats became separated through the first night. Lifeboat no.2 set course for Loch Swilly, about 100 miles away, They sailed and rowed for three days before being picked up by the Admiralty trawler Lord Lister. Lifeboat no.1 reached the rocky shores of County Donegal where they were taken ashore by the coastguard.David Arthur Collingham was born on the 19th of March 1884 in Lincolnshire he joined the Royal Navy on the 21st of October 1915 stating that he was an Iron Founder. He joined Bergamot on the 14th of July 1917 and was Killed in Action on the 13th of August the same year. He was the son of Hannah Collingham of 32 Old Bargate, St Botolph’s, Lincoln, he is commemorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial on Panel 22.Sold with an excellent file of 9 original pieces of Paperwork including the Original Royal Navy Telegram to Hannah Collingham stating:-“I regret to have to inform you that information had been received by this Department to the effect H.M.S. Bergamot was sunk by an enemy submarine on the 13th instant, and that David Arthur Collingham, Stoker 1st Class, Official No. K.28401, who according to the latest records at the Admiralty was serving aboard, was not amongst survivors who have been landed. It is reported, however, that one or two Officers or men were recovered from the water by the enemy submarine. In these circumstances it is regretted that your son must for the present be regarded as “Missing”An original photograph of David in uniform, Commonwealth war Graves details, Copy Service Papers, Copy Medal Roll confirming a his Pair, Copy Pension Records.
