An early 20th century circular brass compass, by Stanley, London, detachable cover, folding sight, 11.5cm diam, c.1910; a 19th century four draw telescope, by J P Cutts, Optician to Her Majesty, 28cm cylinder, bound with Ôtortoiseshell', lacquered brass tripod stand, 106cm overall (3) **John P. Cutts was an important provincial maker, first encountered with at 58, Norfolk Street, Sheffield 1825-28 and thereafter at 43 Division Street to 1845 when he either died or retired. He was a domestic, mathematical and philosophical instrument maker, and supplied (according to his trade card) spectacles, telescopes, opera glasses, mathematical and nautical instruments, barometers, thermometer etc. The Queen to which he was appointed was Queen Adelaide and the inscription on the first draw clearly implies that she was still Queen and not dowager, making the date of the telescope c. 1830-37.
