When wound the globe spins, and the satellite - which starts next to the globe - moves away to its full extent then returns. A bronze Seal, 16th/17th century, simply, but effectively modelled as a single-horned, mythical beast squatting with up-raised head, 5.5cm The seal characters read: Chengshi hanmo (a seal belonging to someone whose surname was Cheng and made specifically for use with calligraphy). As is frequently pointed out by Rose Kerr in her ground-breaking Later Chinese Bronzes, V&A, 1990, dating bronzes from the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties is fraught with problems. However, the present seal characters are enclosed by chilong close in handling to those cast on the leg of a tripod censer illustrated op cit, pl. 23, and dated to 16th/17th century. CONDITION REPORT: Some small knock marks to side of base, otherwise no obvious faults. Provenance: as per catalogue.

BURNER - a small poorly cast section 2 x 2mm on key band, otherwise no major faults.
