Thomas Willem Van Oss, N.S. (British, b.1901) Three quarter length portrait of Vice Admiral Edward de Faye Renouf, R.N., standing in full ceremonial dress on the deck of a warship oil on canvas, signed lower right 38½ x 28¼in. (97.75 x 71.75cm.) * Vice Admiral Edward de Faye Renouf, CVO, CB (1888-1972) was the son of Edward Binet Renouf (1862-1929) and Lilian Mary De Faye of Jersey. He joined the Royal Navy in 1903 and served during WW1 as a Torpedo Officer on the Dreadnought battleship HMS Conqueror. From 1934-36 he was commanding officer of the cruiser HMS Orion and he commanded the ships HMS Sheffield and HMS President during WW2, also serving as Naval ADC to the King from 1939-40 and as Rear-Admiral commanding the 3rd Cruiser Squadron from 1940-41. He became Vice-Admiral in 1943 and retired the same year, completing his career as Naval Assistant to the Deputy First Sea Lord on HMS President in 1945. He retired officially to Jersey and acted as Chairman of the Sea Cadets Committee for many years. See Illustration.
Reg Smythe (British, 1917-1998) `There`s Many a Man ----`, pen and ink and coloured pencil cartoon on a manilla envelope, signed to lower margin of image, inscribed to top margin in pencil, 5¾ x 4 5/8in. (14.5 x 11.75cm.). * Reginald `Reg` Smythe was the creator and artist of the famous `Andy Capp` cartoons, published in the Daily Mirror from 1957 to 1999, the final year using a stockpile of unpublished comic strips. He served as a machine gunner in the Royal Northumberland Fusiliers in the North African Campaign during WW2, working his way up to Sergeant. He had already emerged as a talented artist by this time, drawing posters for amateur dramatics productions and selling cartoons to Cairo magazines. He was in the same regiment as Captain Herbert Borne, to whom he gave this cartoon during their time in North Africa. ROY NOCKOLDS (1911 - 1979) Framed, signed verso, oil on board, unfinished composition showing two racing cars on track, one being the red Sunbeam Tiger, (1925). Nockolds joined the RAF in WW2 and soon became an official war artist, painting for the Ministry of Information. He later illustrated for Autocar, Motor and Motor Sport magazines. 26cm x 31cm.
