Y An early Victorian rosewood four-glass mantel clockWilkinson, Leicester, second quarter of the 19th centuryThe five pillar twin chain fusee bell striking movement with anchor escapement regulated by lenticular bob pendulum and shouldered plates, the 6.5 inch square silvered brass Roman numeral dial signed WILKINSON, LEICESTER to centre, with blued steel hands, STRIKE/SILENT selection switch at twelve o'clock and fine leafy scroll engraved spandrel decoration, the case with bevelled top glass over fluted frieze and front door with heavy bevelled glass and canted silvered insert to interior, the sides with further bevelled glasses and the rear with rectangular glazed door, the base with generous ogee outline waist over moulded skirt with slender squab feet, 35.5cm (14ins) high. A John Wilkinson is recorded in Baillie, G.H. Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World as working circa 1815-26.Condition Report: The movement is in relatively clean working condition with no visible evidence of alteration or noticeable replacements. The pendulum holdfast bracket and screw are no longer with the clock. The dial is in good condition with nice mellow silvering and faults limited to some historic light surface bruising between the I and II numerals and other slight scratching; the hands are probably replacements. The case has been cosmetically restored (re-polished) with visible faults limited to some wear to the edge of the veneers where they butt up to the front glass to both the left hand and upper margins of the front door. Otherwise faults are limited to a few minor bumps, scuffs and slight veneer shrinkage commensurate with age. The front door is currently locked and do not have a case key for this clock, there is a winder present. Condition Report Disclaimer

William was an upholsterer and cabinet-maker who was particularly known for his patent furniture. By 1808 William had established a business of his own at 14 Ludgate Hill, London. Wilkinson built up a flourishing trade, with significant commissions from such distinguished clients as the Goldsmiths' Company. His sons William and Charles joined him in the business and it continued after their father 's death in 1833 as William & Charles Wilkinson. A SET OF FIVE WILLIAM IV WHITE PAINTED PARCEL GILT SIDE CHAIRS, c.1830, possibly designed by Philip Hardwick and supplied by W & C Wilkinson, London, with padded scroll carved backs and serpentine seats, on turned legs, covered in silk damask, each rear seat rail stamped 'IB'. 54cm x 52cm x 92cm highThe form of these chairs, in particular the asymmetrical C-scrolled cresting suggests an attribution to the designer Philip Hardwick (1792-1870) who supplied a very similarly conceived set of chairs for The Court Drawing Room, Goldsmith's Hall, London in 1834-35. These were supplied by the Ludgate Hill based firm W & C Wilkinson. One of the chairs is on loan to the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.

British 1822 Pattern Infantry Officers Sword of Lewis John Fillis Jones Royal Fusiliers 1855, regulation blade No.7574 by Wilkinson etched with crowned VR, regimental title and badge, battle honours to Salamanca, and Crimea battle honours to Sebastopol, and owners crest and initials all amidst scrolling foliage, regulation brass hilt with folding side guard, in its brass mounted leather scabbard. Good condition, some age wear overall, chape reattached, hilt slightly distorted. Blade 82cms.
A 19th Century Double Barrel Percussion Howdah Rifle by Wilkinson of London, 38 bore, the 56cm browned twist barrels with hinged leaf rear sight, with signed blued steel lock plates, slide safety catches, blued recurving trigger guard, walnut half stock with chequered grip, vacant nickel cartouche, steel but plate and swivel ramrod, 97cm. Reblued finish. Strong actions work, holding at full and half cock. Bruising to stock. Pitting to bore.
Two fencing foils, marking on one foil blade 'Wilkinson Pall Mall' reputedly used by his Imperial Highness Eugene Louis Jean Joseph Napoleon Bonaparte (1856-1879), whilst at Chiselhurst, Kent, in competition with Captain Felix Bertrand. The Imperial Prince, whilst serving with British forces in 1879, was killed in a skirmish with a group of Zulus. His early death sent shockwaves throughout Europe, as he was the last serious dynastic hope for the restoration of the House of Bonaparte to the throne of France. One (af)
A George V Coldstream Guards officers dress sword, by Henry Wilkinson, the pierced basket hilt with wirework shagreen grip with metal scabbard. Length 102 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The blade is firm in the hilt. It is also straight. The blade is rusty in places. It bears initials H.L.F. There does not appear to be a family crest. The shagreen grip is in generally good order with no significant losses. There is a number on the blade but it is difficult to read. It might be 52/13.

A TAXIDERMY ALICORN,20th century, a taxidermy horse mounted on a metal base, in a rearing position, with mounted swan wings and horn, on two Corinthian capitals,202cm high excluding base, 239cm high including base195cm wingspan195cm longThis work was commissioned by the current owner.The word 'Alicorn' has its roots in Latin, where it is used to describe the horn of a unicorn. Unicorn horns have been of great medicinal interest since their first mentionings in antiquity and were often featured in cabinets of curiosities into the Victorian era. They were commonly believed to have immense healing powers, as well as the power to purify water and cure most forms of poisoning and intoxication. What was in fact used would likely have been horns of the more common variety, from deers and stags, but also narwhals as these would have been deemed more visually appropriate and more convincing. These would have been ground and ingested in various ways, believed to cure most ailments, and would have been kept by European royalty in the belief that they would ward off disease.This lot can be viewed prior to the sale at a London SW location on a prearranged basis.
