Burton was a chemist at Wedgwood, but moved to Pilkington to oversee the production of fine pottery in the style of ancient Persian and Chinese potters, commissioning work from some of the top designers of the time. Burton was inspired by the Arts & Crafts Movement, and in particular, the workings of William Morris and John Ruskin. Condition report: Crazing apparent in various places across the body of the vase. No evidence of cracks, chips. Inside cracked and water stained.

GORDON FORSYTH (1879-1952); a white earthenware charger, copper lustre lion rampart on honey glaze, painted mark, diameter 36cm. (D)Fosyth is renowned for his sumptuous lustre work at Pilkington's Royal Lancastrian Pottery. The work is characterised by its medieval motifs, heraldic symbols, sailing ships and lions rampant ... and above all its rich colouring. A rare Royal Lancastrian sable antelope vase by Richard Joyce, with impressed and incised marks to base. Height 21 cm, diameter +/- 17 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The vase is in generally very good order with no evidence of any repairs or restoration. There are some scratches to the glaze on the top rim. Whilst the vase does not appear to have any restoration it is very dirty to the interior. The interior is finely crazed all over and there is a visible hairline crack running just around the bottom edge of the vase and up into the main body. This is visible on both the exterior and interior. There is no movement. The exterior glaze is in generally very good order and the colours are bright.
Various military swagger sticks, the handles include a spent cartridge shell with applied cap badge insignia, a plated example with Egypt insignia possible Royal Lancastrian regiment, a ball end with sectional body and a woven metal handle with Tank Corps insignia, longest 91cm, shortest 59cm.

A lustre bottle vase, in green, yellow and blue tones, decorated with four deer amid flowering trees, the neck with clouds, impressed and inscribed marks, 22.3cm highCONDITION: Fine crazing to the glaze all over, the base has been ground off in manufacture, the crazing is slightly heavier around the foot otherwise in good condition with no restoration chips or cracks detected.
