Gounouilhou et Francois a Geneve, an ebonised portico clock:, the eight-day duration movement striking the hours and half-hours on a bell with an outside countwheel and adjustable beat to the pendulum crutch, the backplate signed Gounouilhou et Francois a Geneve, with a nine-rod compensating pendulum with a dual-metal bob, the round silvered dial engraved with black Roman numerals and an inset subsidiary seconds dial, with blued steel moon hands and engraved with the maker's name, the ebonised portico case having four tapered pillars with brass capitals of acanthus leaf decoration, with further decorative gilt-metal mounts to the base and standing on decorative cast brass feet, height 54.5cm. * Biography Gounouilhou & Francois were well-known Geneva makers working at Quai de l'Isle 241 making clocks and watches with complications as well as carriage clocks with both petite and grande-sonnerie. They exhibited at the l'Exposition Geneva in 1828. Pierre-Simon Gounouilhou was a French protestant, born in 1779, who was to have a major influence on the horological scene in Geneva; amongst his many achievements were watches constructed with quarter-chiming and Jaquemarts automata. He was a signatory on the petition, dated February 1829, to have a new observatory constructed.
