A REGENCY ORMOLU PORTICO CLOCK BY BAETENS, 23, GERRARD STREET, SOHO, LONDON, c. 1820. H: 36 cm. A fine quality English mantel ormolu timepiece by this respected firm of London clockmakers. The ormolu case is of classical style with a rectangular base applied to the front with cast berried foliage, mask and central bronze recumbent lion. The fusee movement with enamel dial is fully signed on the backplate on a silvered cartouche and is contained within a gilt drum supported on twin tapered ringed columns and surmounted by a central eagle with outstretched wings. Joseph Baetens was in business during the first quarter of the 19th century and is very well known as one of the most important makers of English bronze and ormolu clocks in London during that period.
