Pepys (Samuel, Secretary 1p., folio, Navy Office, 22nd October 1668, asking for the Attendants views about the cost of transporting sand from Upner Castle [Upnor, Kent] to Chatham docks, so that they can estimate what the king has paid to Mr Parker for sand and transportation together, because the King`s ships have been used, the Navy Office believes that they should only be paying for the sand", folds.

Shepard (Ernest H.) `Sick of the Staggers` original drawing from Everybody`s Pepys, between p.424 & 423, pen & ink drawing, c.292 x 210mm., signed, framed and glazed, [c.1926.]

Lot 449

Shepard (Ernest H., painter and illustrator numerous pp., v.s., v.d., Woodmancote, Lodsworth, West Sussex, 29th March 1956 - 28th November 1969 & some undated, on various subjects, including, on illustrating, "I have had a nice offer from G. Bell (publishers of Pepys etc) which is giving me some concern. It is to illustrate a book of old French fairy stories by Lancelyn Green... though I doubt for any profit... . I do hope your drawings are going better than mine - I think a thing looks right when I knock off in the evening & then, next morning, it looks horrible and I want to begin all over again", an allusion to Christopher Robin, "... I am trying to work out for Punch, for Badgers are partial to bulbs and Brock the badger is a leading character. They are quite enthusiastic about it at Punch and now the difficult part will be to keep the story going along, with new adventures. A boy an everyday boy not like C. Robin, goes ahead with Brock. The trouble is I have to make sure of being 4 weeks in hand", The Wind in the Willows, "I am getting much enjoyment from making the coloured drawings for `Wind in the Willows`. Did I tell you they are going to do a larger 21/s- Edition in the autumn... . It is rather a nuisance for Scribners have sent back my design for the colour jacket for `Wind in the Willows` as it is quite the wrong size - It was their fault as they gave me the size of the book & never said that the thing was to be a panel with their own type of lettering above. However I hope I may do a better one, now that I know I have till mid September. Yesterday afternoon Norah and I went out to look for a nice Willow tree, not too easy to find round here and we went Miles, then at Selham, which is only two miles away on the way home I found one by the Rother, quite a nice one, not pollarded, but good enough", his autobiography, "I have now started on the drawings for my book and find that easier than the writing. It is rather startling to find what a lot I can remember, I suppose that, by drawing everything as I did, events & people & places got fixed at the back of my mind... . I have written to John Betjeman to ask him to review it when the time comes" and the launch, "The Army and Navy Stores are really putting their backs into publicity & being most helpful including a window display of `Wind in Willows` drawings borrowed from Methuens", reminiscences about his childhood home in Kent Terrace, London, "The outside is exactly as it was even down to the lamp post in front... we tried to get inside but it was empty & locked up... it was Crown property & we should get permission... this was not good enough, so, remembering what I used to do when I was 7, I led them round to the mews at the back where the garden door was not locked. Then we got in through the back door... the place has been empty for over 10 years... some of the floors have even fallen in but we got up to the top and I fear that I got a lump in my throat - so many things still there - banisters, doors etc even the little niche behind the front door...", Baynes`s work, "... you showed me some rough sketches for your Arabian Nights and among them, was one of the nativity. I fell in love with it and asked if I might be allowed to buy it..."an amusing account of a visit by two of Pauline Baynes`s aunts, "I have tried to point out to them the inadequacy of your accommodation & the difficulty of supplying meals. I have not the least doubt that you will be expected to provide transport for this invasion. Besides numerous suitcases they have two enormous trunks, so nothing short of a bus would suffice. The two women bicker about the house all day, so it is difficult to see how you will be able to work"; and a small quantity of other items including a photograph of Shepard, a photocopy of a letter from Shephard to Baynes and newspaper cuttings of obituaries, folds.

Lot 152

A Charles II silver two handled porringer, Probably by Katherine Stevens, London 1675, of baluster form on a circular foot, the lower body chased with a band of acanthus leaves to the lower section, with caryatid beaded scroll handles, engraved with initials R.B over M.E on base, approx 16 cm diameter from handle to handle, 7 oz. See John Culmes` article on the `goose in a dotted circle` which he attributes to John Duck, silver society journal Vol 14, 2002, pages 97 to 105. Katherine Stevens was the widow of the goldsmith Roger Stevens. His maker`s mark `RS, a mullet above and below`, is to be found on flagons, cups, ewers, tankards, porringers and other hollow ware bearing London hallmarks from 1634/35 to 1670/71. He was patronised by Samuel Pepys. In respect of his widow`s mark, KS, a mullet above and below, we find only a handful of examples between 1673/4 and 1677, including a tankard which was presented to Emmanuel College, Cambridge, by Sir William Temple, 1st Bt, who was MP for Cambridge University in 1679. John Culme notes that silver bearing both the RS and KS marks, as well as that with the `goose in a dotted circle` is of a certain observable continuity in quality. We would like to thank John Culme for kindly allowing us to quote from his article and David Beasley, the librarian of the Goldsmiths Company, for his advice and assistance.

* James II. The Severall Debates of the House of Commons Pro et Contra. Relating to the Establishment of the Militia, Disbanding the New Raised Forces and Raising a Supply for his Majestie. Beginning the Ninth Day of November 1685 and Ending the Twentieth of the same Month. Being the day of the Prorogacon of the Parliament, pp.[2],70, paper manuscript written in a neat hand, general title & title to following leaf neatly ruled in red, borders ruled in red throughout, later marbled paper strip to spine edge, disbound 4to. James II, a Roman Catholic, became King at the death of his elder brother Charles II on 6 February 1685. The Monmouth Rebellion of 1685, also known as the Pitchfork Rebellion, was an attempt to overthrow James II by 1st Duke of Monmouth, an illegitimate son of Charles II, who claimed to be rightful heir to the throne. The rebellion ended with the defeat of Monmouth’s forces at the Battle of Sedgemoor on 6 July 1685. Monmouth was executed for treason on 15 July, and many of his supporters were executed or transported in the ÒBloody AssizesÓ of Judge Jeffreys. James II took advantage of the suppression of the rebellion to consolidate his power. He asked Parliament to repeal the Test Act and the Habeas Corpus Act, and used his dispensing power to appoint Catholics to senior posts, and raised the strength of the standing army. Parliament opposed many of these moves, and on 20 November 1685 James dismissed it. The manuscript details the debates in Parliament between 9th to 20th November 1685 and includes reference to debating individuals such as the Earl of Middleton, Sir Hugh Cholmeley, Mr. Seymour, Sir Richard Temple, Mr Thomas Howard, Lord Preston, Lord Ranelaigh, Sir Edward Jennings, Lord Castleton, Col. Aston, Mr. Pepys & Sir Thomas Clergis etc. The manuscript is written on paper probably by Abraham Janssen, bearing a coat of arms watermark with motto “Dieu et Mon Droit”. Examples of which have been found on manuscript paper used in Samuel Pepys” library of c.1690. See Heawood (Edward), Monumenta Chartae Papyraceae, Watermarks, pub. 1950, pl.77 no.453. (1)

Circle of John Hayles c.1600-1679- Portrait of a young woman, bust-length, with dark curled hair, wearing a brown dress with white lace and pearl sash; Portrait of a young gentleman, bust-length, long dark hair worn natural, wearing possibly elements of a military uniform with tied white lace stock, white satin doublet and short golden cape with leather and brass belts and buckles; oil on canvas, ovals, a pair, in matching carved and gilded oval frames, with beaded sight-edge, fluted hollow, egg-and-dart course schematic outer-edge, (2) Note: John Hayles, relative of the miniaturist Samuel Cooper, competitor of Sir peter Lely and respected by his contemporaries for his replicas of the portraits of van Dyke. These paintings show all the elements expected of a fashionable portrait painter of the day in particular Michael Dahl 1659-1743, Mary Beale 1632-1697,and Willem Wissing 1656-1687 all these working from the ideals laid down by such painters as van Dyke, and the larger studios of Kneeler 1646-1723 and lely 1618-1680. His famous work being the portrait of the diarist Samuel pepys; Extract from Pepys diary, 17 March 1666: ...at noon, home to dinner, and presently with my wife out to Hales`s, where I am still infinitely pleased with my wife`s picture. I paid him 14l for it, and 25s for the frame, and I think it is not a whit too dear for so good a picture. It is not yet quite finished and dry, so as to be fit to bring home yet. This day I begin to sit, and he will make me, I think, a very fine picture. He promises it shall be as good as my wife`s, and I sit to have it full of shadows, and do almost break my neck looking over my shoulder to make the posture for him to work by.

In May of that year both were arrested on the charge of leaking naval secrets to the French and Pepys was also separately accused of popery. The charges were motivated by hostility to the Duke of York (the future James II) whose men they both were and who was the subject of parliamentary attempts to exclude him from the throne..

He “entered the service of the crown as a dockyard clerk in July 1671. In 1675 he became clerk to the clerk of the acts whose office was then held jointly by Thomas Hayter and John Pepys a younger brother of Samuel Pepys...[In 1689] Sergison was...appointed...and remained clerk of the acts for thirty years for the most part single-handed but from 1701 to 1706 jointly with Samuel Atkins formerly clerk of Samuel Pepys. During this period which included the war of the Spanish succession as well as the little war of 1718 the work of the navy board was excessively heavy and Sergison won the highest opinion of the several administrations with whom he acted. The emoluments of the office were large though rather by perquisites and fees than by pay and in 1691 Sergison was able to purchase Cuckfield Park in Sussex. During the reign of Anne he more than once asked for permission to retire but was told that he could not be spared. Afterwards when he was superseded at the age of 65 in 1719 he seems to have felt it as an undeserved insult.” DNB.

Cockerell (Samuel Pepys Cockerell, 1754-1827, English Architect and Siddons' landlord). The actress writes to her correspondent concerning the apparent sale of her house, commenting 'I shall immediately take measures to dispose of this property, and expect to be treated with by a gentleman who has long desired to have it within a few days. I have been advised to make a few trifling alterations which I am assured woud [sic] facilitate the advantageous disposal of it (insomuch as to preclude any loss) and am to receive an estimate of the cost, which will be very considerably diminished by the sale of many valuable fixtures to the purchaser. The expediency of this measure is to be well considered however, and I hope you will add to the rest of your never-to-be-forgotten kindnesses, the advantage of your opinion on the subject.' Slight traces of former mounting, otherwise VG
