For further reading refer to Master Pieces by Gareth Williams pp 103/104 "One very attractive design imported is normally referred to as a "Pepys" set. Such a set, with a box board and backgammon counters, was presented to the London Museum by the Pepys Cockerell family, descendants of the diarist Samuel Pepys... The sets made for export for the East India Company and those made to cater for English taste did to a certain extent modify the style of carving of the traditional Hindu Indian artist. They would carve in the inherited style used over centuries by masons whose sculptured masterpieces of their varied gods impressively adorn the ancient Hindu and Buddhist temples built throughout the subcontinent."

Peter Monamy (London 1681-1749)The venerable HMS Eagle making ready to sail from her offshore anchorage, probably at the Nore oil on canvas83 x 122.5cm (32 11/16 x 48 1/4in).Footnotes:ProvenanceAdmiral Sir John Peter Lorne Reid GCB CVO (1903-1973), Bolton.Private collection, UK.Whilst not a retrospective in the accepted sense, this work depicts an elderly 3rd rate, a vessel seemingly from an earlier age, past her prime and in her twilight years. The overly high stern, in conjunction with the elegant side windows of her stern galleries, are both features more typical of the ships-of-war dating to the reign of Charles II and the navy of Samuel Pepys during his hugely influential tenure as Chief Secretary to the Admiralty. Notwithstanding her outward appearance however, the vessel is clearly flying the new 'Red Ensign' introduced into the fleet after the Act of Union with Scotland in 1707 and which alone confirms her longevity. Almost certainly one of Pepys's celebrated 'Thirty Ship Programme' of 1677, a surprisingly large number of those ships (built between 1678 and 1680) were still in service in 1707, although by then all of them would have been altered, repaired or, in some cases, completely rebuilt to reflect the continual ravages of the sea, battle damage or to incorporate periodic changes in armament. As the largest 'class' within the 1677 Programme, the twenty 3rd rates - of which Eagle was one - have since been described by some naval historians as 'the best-looking sailing ships ever completed', but attempting to name a specific vessel within the twenty is complicated by the fact that 'the individual ship design was in each case left to the builder.'It is usual to identify these majestic ships by a careful study of their highly ornate stern carvings which usually include either royal ciphers, regal initials, or other similarly characteristic details. Unfortunately, this handsome bow view robs us of those clues although the distinctive side panes of the stern gallery windows shown here are strikingly similar to those featured on the splendid but short-lived Coronation, a large 2nd rate launched at Portsmouth in 1685. It is interesting to speculate therefore that this vessel might also be a Portsmouth-built ship which narrows the field considerably and offers up two possibilities, namely the Eagle and the Expedition. Of the two, the more likely candidate is the Eagle which, having been repaired and reconditioned at Chatham in 1699-1700, then served with distinction during the War of the Spanish Succession, mostly in the Mediterranean, and was part of Sir George Rooke's fleet which famously took Gibraltar in 1704. By 1707, Eagle was in Sir Cloudesley Shovell's squadron in the Mediterranean which, whilst returning home for the winter, was wrecked on the Isles of Scilly on 22nd October that year due to faulty navigation. This error resulted in one of the most spectacular disasters in the long history of the Royal Navy and this painting may well be a memorial to the loss of a fine old ship and all those who perished in her.Peter Monamy was born in London in 1681, the youngest son of a Guernsey man. Throughout his career he was heavily influenced by the works of Willem van de Velde, the Younger and other North European, Dutch and French masters. Monamy was himself a collector of Van de Velde's drawings and these influenced his development as a maritime painter resulting in numerous commissions from mercantile and naval patrons, including the famous Channel Island's naval families, the Durrels and the Saumarezs. In 1726, he was elected a Liveryman of the Company of Painter-Stainers, to which he presented a very large painting of the 'Royal Sovereign at anchor' which still remains in their collection. Although his paintings usually depict actual ships, they rarely record specific events as, up until 1739, his career coincided with a long period of peace. From the 1730s until his death, Monamy was at the centre of London's artistic life and was a friend and companion of Hogarth, sometimes collaborating with the celebrated younger artist. Despite his many commissions however, he was never particularly prosperous and also painted decorative pictures specifically for commercial galleries and dealersFor further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Moxon learnt the printing trade in the Netherlands and followed in his father's footsteps after his return to England in the 1650's, when he started to produce scientific papers, maps and a variety of globes ranging in sizes up to 26 inches in diameter. The pocket globes proved to be very popular as a convenient and portable way to discuss latest discoveries with colleagues in the emerging coffee houses in the City. They were priced at 15 shillings, a sum much less expensive than the larger table and library globes. Samuel Pepys (1633-1703) bought a pair of the larger Moxon globes for himself, and also acquired another pair for the Admiralty during his time as Chief Secretary.Literature:Derek Long, 'At the Sign of the Atlas' The Life and Work of Joseph Moxon. The Dutch fleet had surprised a joint Anglo-French fleet at anchor in Solebay (nowadays as Sole Bay), near Southwold in Suffolk. The Dutch had hoped to repeat the success of the Raid on the Medway and a frigate squadron under Willem Joseph van Ghent sailed up the Thames but discovered that Sheerness Fort was now too well prepared to pass. Circle of Hendrik Maertensz. Sorgh (1611-1670) Dutch The Fish Market Bears signature, oil on canvas, 63cm by 80cm Provenance: Houstoun Boswall Collection (via descent from Houstoun Boswall baronets) Private Collection UK This composition presents a wealth of detail suggesting Hendrik Maertensz. Sorgh as direct influence and author at least in part. Numerous distinctive elements can be found in similar market scenes by Sorgh where, as here, a central elegant figure and other key participants are differentiated by bold colour and light from the muted tones and looser handling of background and secondary characters. Patterning and arrangements of specific colours - in this case accents of red/pinks, gold/yellow and grey/white - focus attention on key passages such as the interaction between the central figure and the fishwife to the far right whose cut of salmon echoes the woman's dress. Typical also are the displays of market fare - in this case fish - painted with care and considerable effect, the basket of plaice lower left balancing the fish on the stall to the right. Children and dogs playing or watching in the foreground are also found elsewhere in Sorgh's work, as is the diminutive woman carrying a wide basket on her head and the porticoed market area - perhaps loosely based on related structure/s in Rotterdam. A key note is struck by the fish-seller at centre whose pose echoes that of the Italianate statue of Neptune. Classicising elements such as the statue and sculpted portico - with their suggestion of roots in antiquity to underpin a sense of current civic pride - support a date of c.1665. The painting offers numerous complex and thoughtful passages executed to good effect - while certain areas indicate lesser studio hand/s. It includes two unusual historical details: well executed renderings of a hobby-horse clutched by the sulky young boy and of the handwarmer or muff carried by his mother. The handwarmer appears rarely in C17th Dutch art but was popular in Europe at times during the period - and is famously referenced in Samuel Pepys diary entry for 30 November 1662, which records how he borrowed one from his wife! John Riley (London 1646-1691)Portrait of George Legge, 1st Baron Dartmouth, three-quarter-length, in a dark blue coat and white lace jabot signed with initials 'J.R.' (lower left)oil on canvas127.8 x 102.2cm (50 5/16 x 40 1/4in).Footnotes:ProvenanceCollection of Sir John ThornycroftWith Agnews, London (both according to a label on the reverse)Admiral George Legge, 1st Baron Dartmouth (circa 1647-1691) held various commissions in the Navy and Army during the Third Anglo-Dutch War and was appointed Governor of Tangier in 1683 to oversee the evacuation of the English colony, when he was assisted by Samuel Pepys as his secretary and Pepys's diary of the period, published under the title Tangier Papers, gives a revealing insight into Dartmouth's problems and personality at this time. Despite being a staunch Protestant Legge was a loyal supporter of the Duke of York, whom he served in the Navy and when the Duke succeeded his brother as King James II in 1685, Dartmouth's command of the fleet that failed to prevent William of Orange's invasion, and thereby the 'Glorious Revolution' of 1788, went on to guarantee his place in history. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: * TP* VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium.TP Lot will be moved to an offsite storage location (Cadogan Tate, Auction House Services, 241 Acton Lane, London NW10 7NP, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue. A WILLIAM AND MARY WALNUT BOOKCASECIRCA 1690, IN THE PEPYSIAN TASTE203cm high, 117cm wide, 40cm deepThis bookcase is similar in form to the 'Pepys Bookcase' first made by the Master Joiner Thomas Simpson (alias Sympson the Joiner) for the naval administrator and diarist Samuel Pepys to house his vast collection of books at his residence at Seething Lane, London. It is possible that Pepys himself had a hand in the design of the original bookcase.Condition Report: Marks, scratches and abrasions comensurate with age and use. Old chips and splits, some old repairs. Some replaced veneers. This appears mainly only in small sections to the borders of the door fronts and in a small number of small sections to the side panels. Historic sun fading to the front of the bookcase prompted some simulated figuring with a dark stain/ varnish to the moulding around the glass panels and some other areas, probably during the 19th century. This has been used in some areas of the frames of the doors and to the outer banding of the right hand side panel where sun fading is apparent (see additional images)The glass is later replaced but appears hand bevelled so has age.The door lock is an 18th century replacement. The key is present. The brass escutcheons are also likely 18th century additions/ replacements. Some additional old holes adjacent to the current escutcheons indicate where previous escutcheons and possibly a small pull/ ring handle has previously been positioned. The door hinges are high quality replacements, probably 19th or early 20thc in dateThere are a total of 8 adjustable shelves. The shelf at the centre of each of the two interior sections are fixed and integral to the original interior frame of the bookcase. The shelves appear original as do the rear panels. The feet appear to have significant age and appear to engage the original holes for the feet. We cannot guarantee without a doubt that the feet are entirely original. Please refer to all additional images for visual reference to condition. Condition Report Disclaimer

Dated 'Begun Pepys House/ August 2nd 1933/ J.D.', it tantalisingly stops mid-sentence ('...I realised anew how good a poet Blunden is himself. Vita Sackville West...').The collection also includes Drinkwater's unfinished manuscript (dated '3.ix.35') for what was to be English Poetry: An Unfinished History, published posthumously by Methuen in 1938: 'When a Poet writes poetry he can scarcely fail to interest. And the author of this posthumous volume was not only a poet but no mean critic too. As a result, his approach to English Poetry is not a work of merely casual interest: it is illuminating. No one could fail to be enriched and delighted by its discriminating enthusiasms, its happy quotations, and the no less happy judgements, discoveries, definitions and phrases which it gives us... This premature ending is deeply regretted. But, fortunately for us, the first five chapters are devoted to general and personal observations, and are so full of references to the intervening and modern periods that we can genuinely claim to have here a fair impression of Drinkwater's view of the whole panorama of English Poetry' (routledge.com).
