Sir John Buckworth (c.1602-1687) of the third item was Deputy Governor of the Turkey Merchants and an Alderman of London from 1683-86; he was a friend and neighbour of Samuel Pepys and is mentioned several times in Pepys's diary.

Take sage, salendine, rue, rosemary, rososolis, mugwort, pimpernel dragons scabins... of each of these half an ounce cardimum seed a penny worth. Put all these in a gallon of brandy". "1665 S. Pepys Diary 20 July (1972) VI. 163 My Lady Carteret did this day give me a bottle of plague-water home with me." - OED.A very fine recipe book with a wide range of medical and cookery recipes started in the late 17th century and continued until the middle of the next century. Three recipes are of particular interest, one citing "Lady Jason", another "Aunt Aubrey", and finally a reference to "Georges Chocolate House". Hindmarsh, 1683.⁂ A poem in heroic couplets on the transformation of brandy from a traditional drink of the lower classes to a favourite among reprobates of the higher echelons of society. Haines was a well-known figure of the stage in the late 17th century, first as a dancer (whom Pepys described as "incomparable") and then as an actor and writer/speaker of prologues and epilogues.

The manuscript letter states, in part, ‘Wee have nothing to say in answer to your lre. of the 10th instant but to lett you know that wee have recd. It, and according to your desire have granted the allowing you an Instrument at Shipwr: pay, and to that end wee send you inclosed a Warrt. to the Clerk of the Cheque…..’ Signed by Pepys at the conclusion and countersigned by six others comprising John Pepys (1641-1677, Younger brother of Samuel Pepys. Joint Clerk of the Navy Board), William Brouncker (1620-1684, 2nd Viscount Brouncker, English Mathematician and first President of the Royal Society who also served as a Commissioner of the Royal Navy and was a friend and colleague of Pepys, featuring prominently in his Diary), Sir Richard Haddock (c.1629-1715, English Royal Naval officer), Sir Thomas Allin (1612-1685, English Admiral), Thomas Hayter (d. circa 1689, Clerk of the Acts 1673, Secretary of the Admiralty 1679 and Comptroller of the Navy 1680-82) and Sir John Ernle (1620-1697, English Politician, Chancellor of the Exchequer 1676-89). Some small tears and areas of paper loss to the edges and one lengthy, neat split to the horizontal fold at the centre, only very slightly affecting the text but not the signatures, FR
