Samuel Pepys Cockerell (British 1844-1921)Magdalen from the Cherwell, OxfordWatercolour Signed with initials, inscribed and dated 66 (to mount) 19.7 x 24.8cm (7¾ x 9¾ in.)Provenance:The artistBy descent to the sitter, the artist's daughter Frederica Lucy CockerellBy family descent to the present owner Samuel Pepys Cockerell (1844-1921) | lots 237-241The following group of works from the collection of Samuel Pepys Cockerell (1844-1921) have passed through descent to the present owner and are coming to market for the first time since leaving the artist's studio. Cockerell was the youngest son of architect, archaeologist and writer Charles Robert Cockerell, RA, RIBA (1788-1863). Samuel Cockerell established a career as a sculptor, painter and like his father, a writer. After studying a B.A. honours degree at Christ Church, Oxford Cockerell entered the Royal Academy Schools and exhibited at the Academy almost annually between 1875 and 1903. Cockerell had a particular interest in sculpture but also depicted a range of broad subjects from literary and biblical references and portraiture. His range of works were exhibited widely not only at the Royal Academy but further afield at the Grosvenor Gallery, the New Gallery, the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. Cockerell was also an avid art collector who was particularly fond of works by the Pre-Raphaelites.One of the most influential figures in Cockerell's life and career was his dear friend Frederic, Lord Leighton. Cockerell and fellow painter Valentine Cameron Prinsep were Leighton's executors and were present alongside family at Leighton's bedside on his death on 25th January 1896. Leighton trusted Cockerell's opinion and according to G. Ulick Browne's article in The Studio Leighton asked 'Cockerell's advice about the design and composition of his picture, and, what is more to the point, almost always took it.' Included in the collection is a series of landscapes by Lord Frederic Leighton depicting views of Lindisfarne Castle. Cockerell's close relationship with Frederic Leighton had a strong influence on both his work and personal life especially from 1875 until Leighton's death in 1896. Works by Cockerell himself show his sensitive nature through two endearing small scale studies of his daughter Frederica Lucy and his interest in sculpture is evident through his detailed portrayal of the statue of Pope Julius III in Perugia.

From a private collection of early naval silver A VERY RARE CHARLES II PRESENTATION NAVAL SILVER TANKARD maker’s mark probably of Francis Singleton, London, 1672; plain tapering cylindrical, with scroll handle and flat cover with double-scroll thumb-piece, the front engraved THE OWNERS OF THE ANE FRIGATE GIFT 1672, marked on cover, rim and handle, overall height -- 6in. (17.5cm.)Footnote: Probably the gift of Henry Johnson (c.1623-83), Matthew Andrews (c.1630-1711) and William Wood (1611-78) to Captain Zachary Browne (c.1621-1693), commander of the Ane frigate. Ane (sometimes Anne or Great Anne) was a 34 gun-armed frigate constructed at Henry Johnson’s Blackwall yard in 1669. In addition to Henry Johnson (c.1623-83), the ship was owned by nabob Matthew Andrews (c.1630-1711) and naval contractor William Wood (1611-78). As a senior naval administrator, Samuel Pepys had frequent dealings with all three men but, whilst Johnson was a great friend and dining companion, the diarist had a low opinion of Wood’s ‘knavery’, with frequent clashes between the two men over government contracts. Chartered upon completion by the East India Company, the ship returned to England from Bantam in April 1672 laden with company and private goods, such as pepper, spices, textiles and jewels. There was a tradition within the East India Company of rewarding faithful service with a silver tankard, generally to a value of £10. The company’s minutes show several such awards to captains of returning Indiamen in 1672 ‘who have done the Company service’. This tankard was likely a similar gift from the owners of Ane to their commander Captain Zachary Browne who had safely returned from the east with their valuable goods. Browne may not have received a company tankard as he had recently been reprimanded for accepting a shipment of white pepper in lieu of a personal debt, the private trade in pepper being prohibited by the Company. He also faced a hearing in front of the Company’s Shipping Committee for an unknown misdemeanour. Browne was a highly experienced, if discredited former naval officer, who had seen action at the Battle of Dungeness in 1652 when, as master of the armed merchantman Hercules, he had run his ship aground and been captured by the Dutch. Dismissed from the Commonwealth Navy for incompetence, he was restored to rank under Charles II. Given command of Assistance, 40 guns, he was then present at the Four Days Battle in June 1666, and the ensuing St James’s Day Battle. In January 1673, Ane was chartered to join a fleet of ten armed East Indiamen in carrying cargo valued at £183,000 to Madras and Surat, under convoy of a squadron of six Royal Navy ships commanded by Captain Richard Munden. With Britain again at war with the Dutch, the commanders of the merchant ships, including Captain Browne, were given commissions by the Lord High Admiral, the Duke of York, to engage the enemy whenever possible and to act ‘as becomes persons in such commands and trusts’. During the voyage, Munden led his squadron, observed by the East Indiamen, in the re-capture of St Helena from the Dutch.Condition report: Excellent overall clean condition, crisp engraving, lovely colour, minor bruise on handle.

Lot 57

BANKING - SEVENTEENTH CENTURYBanking ledger kept in person by Edward Backwell, containing well over six hundred original acquittances for payments received, over forty of which are signed by him ('per me Edward Backwell'), kept in one volume and two loose gatherings, the principal volume inscribed on the upper cover in a contemporary hand 'Acquittance Booke from the xviiith of August 1660. to xxvth of December following [paraph]/ From xxvi December 1660 to the xxiiith of February next In the [?] Paper [i.e. unbound] bookes' [contractions expanded]; the two unbound gatherings both inscribed in contemporary hands respectively on the upper wrapper 'Arrears./ Acquittances determining the 23th of February 1660' and 'Kings Accompt/ Acquittances determining the 23th of February 1660', c.100 pages, some usual dust-staining and other signs of use, some later leaves roughly torn out and two now loose, contemporary vellum, narrow folio (480 x 180mm.), Excise Office, London, 18 August 1660 to 16 March 1661Footnotes:'THE LEDGERS OF THE GOLDSMITH-BANKER EDWARD BACKWELL ARE UNIQUELY SIGNFICANT IN DOCUMENTING THE FINANCES OF RESTORATION ENGLAND AND THE BIRTH OF MODERN BANKING. They provide the earliest detailed evidence of the scale and sophistication of England's emerging banking system, and the role of the City of London as the leading centre for international trade and finance... Edward Backwell was one of a score of men who in the middle years of the seventeenth century laid the foundations of the modern banking system... His ledgers are the earliest systematic set of banking records to survive in the United Kingdom, and are all the more important for being the records of one of the financial giants of his age. They predate the foundation of the Bank of England by over thirty years, yet show that banking was already fundamental to the City and the country's economic life' (UNESCO, 'Memory of the World' Register, online). This newly-discovered ledger is from an earlier period than nine other Backwell ledgers that have been identified by UNESCO, and whilst those were executed in a scribal hand throughout, this ledger was evidently kept under Backwell's direct personal supervision, having been signed by him in many places ('Per me Edward Backwell'), and bearing annotations by him as to the arrangement of entries.Backwell (c.1618–1683) had been banker to the Commonwealth of England and was, after the restoration of Charles II, banker to the King and many leading figures of the Restoration period (including Samuel Pepys, who mentions him in his diary more often than any other financier of the age). In later years he was Chief Cashier at the Bank of England, and the first man authorised to issue what are now known as bank notes. At the time Backwell kept our ledger he held the offices of Prime Warden of the Goldsmiths Company, Alderman of the City of London, and Commissioner for Assessment, London (a post held from August 1660, the starting date of our ledger). Our ledger covers that part of Backwell's business that dealt his control of the running of the finances of the Excise Office, which raised money for Parliament. It also shows Backwell to be acting as paymaster to the great officers of state, paying at the order of the Commons stipends to the likes of George Monck, Duke of Albemarle, who only months earlier had ushered in the restoration of Charles II, and the King's younger brother, James, Duke of York, afterwards James II. Backwell is shown to be Paymaster to the House of Commons itself, and his own practical input into the running of finances is visible within our ledger. A clear example of this is to be found in the first entry. This has been struck out (the untidiness with which it has been scored through strongly suggests that this has been done by Backwell himself). The deleted entry reads: 'Received the 18 of August 1660 of the Commissioners of Excise London three hundred & three pounds seaven shillings & tenpence being in further part of 4800 payable to mee per Order of the Commons house of Parliament dated the 30 of June 1660 I say Received'. This has been subscribed and signed by Backwell himself: 'Per me Edward Backwell'. Having scored through the main entry, Backwell has further scored through his subscription and signature in order to render them illegible (or at least of no legal validity); and made and initialled a note below in his own hand: 'This Receipt transferred to the former accquittance Booke/ EB'.For a fuller description of the contents of the ledger contact the department. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: •• Zero rated for VAT, no VAT will be added to the Hammer Price or the Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 189

David Le Marchand (Anglo-French, 1674-1726): An early 18th century relief carved ivory oval portrait medallion of a gentleman, possibly depicting Sir Robert Walpole (British, 1676-1745)the sitter in profile looking to dexter with long curling wig, the area under the shoulder with perhaps some very fine traces of hatching suggesting an erased signature, the rear with remnants of a faint ink monogram D L M and a further faint and indistinct ink inscription apparently reading Sir Rob *** above a further indistinct ink written letter W, together with some other multiple faint traces of indistinct ink written wording and letters, mounted within a ebonised moulded oval wood frame with brass suspension loop, the back with later oval glazed aperture, the plaque, 10.5cm high approximately, the whole, 19cm high including suspension fitting Footnotes:David Le Marchand was the foremost ivory carver of his generation. Flourishing in the late 17th and early 18th century, he was also almost certainly one of the most influential portraitists operating in Great Britain during that period.Born in the Northern French port of Dieppe in 1674 which was famed for its long tradition of ivory carving, Le Marchand fled to Britain due to the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685 which persecuted the Huguenot community. Initially settling in Edinburgh in 1696, where the city granted 'Liberty and Licence to David Lemerchand designer and cutter in Ivory to exercise the sd. Arte' (Avery, op. cit., p. 13) by 1700 Le Marchand had moved to London. He then quickly established himself as one of the most fashionable portraitists in the city with sitters that included many of the leading figures of the day including Sir Christopher Wren, Samuel Pepys and Sir Isaac Newton. Le Marchand's oeuvre in portraiture can be viewed against the backdrop of Restoration London, which by this time was a bustling centre of commercial activity with a burgeoning trading empire. The expensive and highly prized exotic medium of ivory was therefore the perfect vehicle for Le Marchand's dramatic Baroque style and these creations appealed particularly to those figures who in their business, state or artistic capacity were instrumental in creating the wealth and prosperity of the City of London. This is illustrated by Le Marchand's most loyal patrons who were the Raper's, a family of wealthy silk merchants who were amongst the earliest Directors of the Bank of England.Although unsigned, the style and quality of the execution of the carving of the present lot is undoubtedly characteristic of Le Marchand's distinctive ivory portraiture. However the absence of the sculptors deeply-cut and sometimes rather crude initials to the area under the upper arm with instead a possible criss-cross erasure may suggest that that either the sitter or the sculptor may have rejected this particular commission. Comparisons with contemporary images of Sir Robert Walpole in the early 18th century with the current lot suggest that he is a very much a likely candidate given the similarities of the sharpness of the distinctive nose and the apparent jowl-like neck below a small chin. However, although this particular portrait is apparently unrecorded, it is possible that the ink monogram and inscriptions to the rear, which were exposed when the plaque was cleaned and the old paper backing was removed, may well be of a slightly later date and subsequently added given that Sir Robert Walpole didn't receive his title until 1725 and this portrait apparently dates from a slightly earlier date - perhaps circa 1710 or thereabouts. Robert Walpole, 1st Earl of Orford, KG, PC, known between 1725 and 1742 as Sir Robert Walpole, was a British statesman and Whig politician who is generally regarded as the first 'modern' prime minister of Great Britain.Walpole was a Whig from the gentry class who was first elected to Parliament in 1701 and held many senior positions. He played a significant role in sustaining the Whig party, safeguarding the Hanoverian succession and defending the principles of the Glorious Revolution of 1688 whilst establishing an effective working relationship between the Crown and Parliament. Beginning his career as a country squire, he appealed to country gentlemen for his political base and his policies consequently sought moderation, working for peace, lower taxes and growing exports with a modicum of tolerance for Protestant Dissenters. By avoiding controversy and any major disputes his 'middle ways' generally attracted moderates from both the Whig and Tory camps. However an appointment to Chancellor of the Exchequer prior to becoming Prime Minister did raise some questions in parliament regarding perceived nepotism on his part after the South Sea Bubble scandal in 1720.Literature:C.
